Random set of the day: Bad Cop's Pursuit
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 70802 Bad Cop's Pursuit, released during 2014. It's one of 29 The LEGO Movie sets produced that year. It contains 314 pieces and 2 minifigs, and its retail price was US$29.99/£24.99.
It's owned by 8,774 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $42.10, or eBay.

You know I always found it weird that the little glider they use for 10 seconds in this scene was made into a set, but not the western themed car they used for the entire rest of the chase
I am now being reminded that The LEGO Movie is ten years old.
Thanks, Huwbot.
A Lego movie set on RSotD! I can't believe it's been ten years since the movie came out!
And this is a great set to start off with.
Feels like it was yesterday when I first saw the film. Never got a set from it though
I remember there being a flying Bad Cop car. I don't remember it including the broken train trellis.
I think of this set and the Super Secret Police Dropship as a mini-line of Space Police IV.

Because of the anniversary, I watched it again last night. I remember how frustrating kids can be with expensive Lego sets. Like my kid taking 7163 into a bubble bath. All the stickers curled up.
He was the same age as the kid in the movie in 2014. That's why the movie always chokes me up. I don't want to be the 'bad guy = President Business.'
My boy is getting ready to go to college next year. We're going to have one last, epic, Star Wars battle before he goes.
Just have to hide all the expensive minifigs!! O__O
I've been looking forward to this day since I realized that TLM turns ten this year. I'm just glad that we got at least one set from the movie this year.
@Halex16: Whereas I got every set except for the polybags and 70810.
@StyleCounselor: I'm assuming your kid was unattended when he took that bubble bath.
I loved "The LEGO Movie", but it came out in a strange time in my LEGO collecting. At last, I was making serious bank from my full-time job, but as I was rarely home (and home ended up either being my mom's house or, after July 2014, my apartment), there wasn't much I could do with what I spent that money on. So that meant on a rare day off that I made back to civilization (and a LEGO Store), I bought whatever caught my fancy and left it still sealed in my closet.
This set (and every other LEGO Movie set except for the Double-Decker Couch) met this fate. I was drawn to this one because I loved the joke of police alligators from the chase sequence in the film. Plus, the flying Bad Cop car was cool, too. Less fascinating is the pitiful excuse for a train trestle, but it is merely a minor part of the set in my eyes. I guess now with the movie being 10 years old this set is "worth something", but I don't care. It will be built with all of the other LEGO Movie sets I have sitting around. Might start with Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship!, SPACESHIP!!! first, though.

His mother was watching him. He was about 5 years-old at the time. When I walked in, it was almost exactly a The Man Upstairs moment.
"Wha... What?... You did?....Ugh... Ack!.. . What?!!!"
Five years old then, fifteen years old now, going to college next year at age sixteen ... congratulations, you have a pretty smart kid. I bet he has a bright future.
Everything is Awesome! That song is still stuck in my head.

Appreciate it. All honors/AP classes, plays 3 sports, spends 2 hrs in the gym everyday, and he's a good person.
He MOCs more than I do. I'll get there once my schedule frees up.
BTW, the bathtub gunship was in 2011.
He did routinely destroy all my SW displays from 2014-2019. My one rule was 'keep all the pieces together in a pile.'
We had this continual discussion:
SW Lego = $$$$
Bulk used Lego = $4/lb.
Flying car and trained crocodiles? This is what people mean when they say defund the police.

It could’ve been the reverse— LEGO designers designed this set first and there was an obligation to put it in the film (it does seem to have almost the same if not the same design in the film). Would also explain why we got so many 2-in-1 sets that appear for seconds at the most yet something as important as the submarine didn’t get a set.
@iwybs Maybe but not everyone goes to college at 16. I didn’t graduate high school until I was two months from 19.

That's a great place to begin. Spectacular set! Hope you got 10497 to go with it. Hope you got 70810 because it's so sweet.
This set is strangely nostalgic for me, I used to spend ages looking at TLM sets in the Lego Catalogue. I was fortunate enough to get Benny's Spaceship, but this would have been a very nice set to get as well. The fact that the side panels opened up and hidden weapons could be exposed just seemed so cool. And also that the tracks could collapse. In other words, it seemed like it had cool functions.

The submarine? The one whose whole narrative purpose was to be a poorly designed, unstable piece of crap that no one should want?
I remember thinking the hidden laser gimmick was so cool as a kid. Still do! The car has a very Space Police III-esque feel that I’ve always really liked too.

Completely agree. Though unfortunately I missed out on the Sea Cow, what an awesome looking set.
Come to think of it, 70816 is the only TLM set I got.
All this action and chaos happening, and then there's this little frog in the back just as chill as ever.
The police alligators cracked me up.
The movie and the theme came out during my dark ages so sadly I don't have any of the sets. I watched it years later though and I enjoyed it.

TLM was the catalyst for Lego's attack on my wallet. Before, I was strictly a Star Wars collector. TLM was the beginning of expansion to TLotR/Hobbit, HP, Ninjago, Modulars, etc.
Some of those (Harry Potter) were difficult/expensive because I was buying retired sets. Then again, they were far cheaper than the prices today.
The last time we saw those og crocodiles/alligators :'(
Seeing trailers for The Lego Movie in late 2013 brought me out of my 10-year dark age and that's when I discovered Brickset to help organize the newfound interest in my childhood collection. I can't believe it's been 10 years now!
The car and the crocs are great, the choice for a side-build isn't. It makes sense when you want to depict the specific scene, but in play, it's so uncomfortably detached from everything =(
Lego Movie sets look like excellent play sets. I wish I had couple of them, including this one. Openning gun port... nice...
Never felt much for this set. The main reason is that the car is not a 2-in-1! They would later release the non-transformed version, but that's just cheating!
Fun fact: The model in the movie differs slightly from the set, and is not actually buildable. The lightbar stays on the windscreen (easiest to see when Bad Cop is scanning around with binoculars while the crew is building their escape sub) rather than hinging open with the roof... but of course the windscreen only has two studs on the outsides, so that's not actually possible. The lightbar also seems to be made of four 1x1 tiles rather than two 1x2s, and is flanked by cheese slopes rather than 1x1 round plates.
Anyway, this is one of two TLM sets I picked up for a very reasonable price on Bricklink a couple when I rewatched the movie after a couple years (the other being 70815). Great sets both, the hidden guns on this one are a lot of fun, and the Dropship is just packed with cool features.

Oh wow. 20 excellent years of croccing.
I did find parts of this set in a lot, kept the crocs and now I'm glad I did. I don't have them in dark green in any other set, so they'll make a nice contrast to the original green.
I don’t think I have the whole set, just the cop car itself which is a nifty little speeder, very sleek and swooshable, and great backup for the police dropship we also got from TLM. Think I stored both with my Space Police III stuff, it’s a very similar vibe
"You're just a baby. In a baby carriage."
I remember seeing this set and kinda wanting it. Mostly because the crocodiles looked cool and I wanted to know if you could actually drive a train on the bridge.

Wrong Lego Movie but... "This song's gonna get stuck inside your he-e-e-ad..."
MeisterDad said:"About the only line I remember from the movie is ‘…his mind is so prodigiously empty…'"
I can remember a lot more lines than that. But then, I *did* see the movie six times in the theater...

That's why, in the spirit of the movie, I disassembled it and made an airplane. The girders paired up were questionable in how well they'd work as wings, but why worry about that when it was equipped with dual croc-bombs?

Please detail dual-croc bombs. I might have a slightly different idea what they could be, so I wanna be sure =)
This is so sweet--thank you for sharing!
Needs Batman to recreate this dialogue:
Bad Cop: 'Batman!'
Batman: 'Pleased to beat you!'
Bad Cop: 'The pleasure is all spine!'
Batman: 'Guess what, you big dumb baby? Your car is a baby carriage!'
(The TLM Batwing / Batmobile would have been nice to have...)

Oh it is definitely the reverse, but given the seeming flexibility of content for these kind of lines and how well the movie did it's odd they didn't have a third wave in reserves, or even do Legacy sets a few years down the line. It's not unheard of for a show exclusive character or build to get a set a year or two after its onscreen debut if there's enough demand.
Ninjago Movie only got a wave and a D2C while Batman Movie got three waves. I always assumed that had to do with sales so it's odd they didn't try to get something more out to capitalize on the first film back when it was popular. Maybe they just really underestimated it's performance and had no other sketch models or prototypes laying around in Feb 2014 when the box office results came in, but the amount of times we've seen a Power Miners prototype crop up in Atlantis or an unreleased BIONICLE part recycled for HERO Factory I doubt that's the case.
Darn, when did we start getting RSotDs that were less than 10 years old? Because there's just no way in the world The Lego Movie was 10 years ago. That's simply not possible. Uh-uh.
@Trigger_:
TLG shares IP ownership with WB, but a story I read about TLBM makes me pretty confident that WB handles story generation, and TLG just has to approve stuff that’s likely to end up in a set. They wanted to give Batgirl and/or Robin shiny yellow capes, and TLG resisted because they knew they’d have to make minifigs of those characters. They either didn’t want to touch shiny material for capes, or didn’t think it would be possible (no idea which). Ultimately, both got shiny capes, in the film and in real life.
Regarding the other stuff, just because they get to approve all the designs doesn’t mean they know during set development how significant each will be to the story. They also have predetermined price points that need to be designed for, and early in the design phase they crank out more stuff than they can ever release. Which of those models eventually get released is determined by a combination of which price points are still available, which models pass muster with the Design Department (just because it looks cool doesn’t mean it’ll make a quality retail set), and which models they favor over others.
@MCLegoboy:
Hrrrm. There’s no info on who designed this one.
@TheOtherMike:
Saw a sneak preview. Watched it twice opening weekend for giveaway items. Watched it at Brickworld Chicago with hundreds of other AFOLs. Did an outdoor show in Campus Martius in downtown Detroit when they picked it as one of their free kids’ movies. Did an indoor show at a super tiny indie theater that I think showed it four times. And then played the console game, which feels very much like watching the film. So by the time I got my hands on a physical copy of the film, I don’t think I opened it for at least 2-3 years because I got kinda burned out on it.

I kinda assumed that might be the reason why it didn’t get a set. Although the western car didn’t have a much better or more stable design.
I just watched the movie last weekend, and my biggest take away from watching the film again is this:
"First law of the sea: Never place your rear end on a pirate's face."
That line amuses me in so many ways, due to a game I once played as a child with a pirate, and an incident involving a rear end on said pirate's face.
Also, Blacktron parts pack.

If that's not some Monkey Island reference that I'm just not remembering, I don't think anyone wants any further explanation.
