LEGO Islands within Fortnite announces LEGO Islands creation tools

Posted by ,

With the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) taking place this week, Epic Games and Unreal Engine had some updates on LEGO Islands within Fortnite to share. On the 20th of March during the State of Unreal presentation, Kari Vinther Nielsen from TLG took to the stage to announce more content for LEGO Islands within Fortnite and a new way for creators to use the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) to make their own custom experiences to share with the world. Creators could also have a chance to make money from their work as long as they’re over 18 and are making content for a 10+ audience.

Brickset was invited to a brief roundtable interview with Kari Vinther Nielsen, Anders Tankred Holm and Ian Shuard-Cubbon from TLG, and Jesse Merriam from Epic Games to recap the announcements. They allowed us to ask questions about the new content and tools being made available to creators. I asked about what plans LEGO had to bridge the gap between digital and physical bricks.

LEGO have shown an interest in this area in a few ways in the past, with varying degrees of success. I was hoping to hear if they are exploring bridging that gap with LEGO Hidden Side-style augmented reality, integration of the QR codes on instructions to import elements from sets into Fortnite, or the ability to export your creations from Fortnite to Bricklink to buy the bricks and build them. Surely they’ve got some more tricks up their sleeves!

Unfortunately, as often happens at these press events, they assumed that the question was “Are Fortnite LEGO sets coming out?!” and so they just gave a “You’ll have to wait and see!” kind of answer.

With the newly announced LEGO elements and styles in UEFN and Fortnite Creative available for anyone to use, all for free, it’s an exciting time to be a LEGO Fortnite fan. I’m looking forward to see what people come up with!

Take a look at the press release to see everything that was announced.

Hah! That was my first thought too. With these tools, you could make your own LEGO Island in LEGO Islands!

Probably not, but LEGO likes to pretend that there is. It's the only reason Monkie Kid is still on shelves.

Personally I always liked that game. Sure, it's basically a Minecraft ripoff, but it was really fun.

I wish Monkie Kid sets were still on shelves instead of having to go online to get them!

Anyone that's interested and wants to avoid Fortnite, there's a fantastic Lego like building game called Brickadia that's going to be on steam early access soon, but you can download the full alpha on their site

people on this website seem routinely surprised that the children's construction toy brand doesn't exclusively cater to people whose primary source of nostalgia is live-action content from the 80s

I’m going to be honest, the LEGO stuff has been underwhelming.

All the stuff being made so far could’ve been done with normal Fortnite assets. The mini games end up being just Fortnite minus the guns and with a LEGO skins.

The main LEGO Fortnite mode itself is a decent survival game, but the building tools are lacking. There’s an emphasis on pre-built kits rather than free form, and they very much are banking on you buying overpriced virtual sets in the shop.

Who’s going to pay $20 for a digital castle they can only use in one mode?

Well, that headline was certainly a sequence of words.

I personally enjoy Lego Fortnite alot!
But I won't lie to myself, it still needs alot of work. I understand that the game is still very early staged, but with more support, content, and so on, it has the capabilities of being something just great.

It's honestly kinda hilarious how much the adults of this community act like the children they berate.

As an American, I certainly enjoy it! It feels very ninjago-esque but with more interesting building techniques in the models (and no +4!). Minus the difficulty in getting the sets, I feel it to be the better theme of the two.

I'd assume a theme heavily based on Chinese mythology would not sell well in the U.S. or Europe, hence the lego store exclusivity

This game proves itself over and over. And there are STILL so many haters. If you haven't actually played it for yourself, then your opinion doesn't mean squat. It's fun. Get over it and let people enjoy things.
