Random set of the day: Go-Kart
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 948 Go-Kart, released during 1978. It's one of 9 Technic sets produced that year. It contains 206 pieces, and its retail price was US$22.
It's owned by 802 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $350.00, or eBay.

Man, I could have sworn we just saw this one not too long ago, but it's been nearly 2 years.

And no, I'm not thinking of the Blue Fury alternate model from April 5th, I just remember a different go-kart not too long ago. Or maybe I am... I don't like that I can't remember.

No, that was 854-1. This one is 984-1. With the same picture...

This is old enough to have gotten regional releases with different numbers, which was still happening all the way into the 90s (maybe even beyond), it's the same set, and therefore still counts as having been on Random Set of the Day before. It's not a new thing, plenty of sets have had this happen, but the most infamous is the Holiday Jet:

We're just three away from completing the collection!
(And although that one does have 13 copies of the same number, it's still a different catalog entry for each version, so they're all in the pool.)
My introduction to Technic.
@MCLegoboy: Retail sets aren't doing the regional set numbers thing, but certain types of Lego exclusives still do it. 6392343 and 6392344, for example.
That motorcycle better stick to left turns or it's going to start having a real problem.

But retail sets _used_ to have separate US numbering. 375-2 was sold in Europe, the UK, Canada, and Australia. In the US, it was sold as 6075-2.
Nice to see the STAMP 9 reused on the back of the moto. Glad the designer put some extra thoughgt into it.
My first (and last) technic set.
Nine, apparently.
This one can’t be that far off the cut-off for being in Vintage Set. Or maybe I just assume that because inherited this one from my dad…

It's at the edge. The cut-off is the dawn of modern minifigs. Which happened in 1978.
@MCLegoboy the most recent exmple I can think of is that one World City plane that was released about 20 times as a seperate set because of the airline. I'd argue that it's still regional. Although the practice you refer to stopped sometwhere in the 80s. Judging from Classic Space, maybe even 1979.
Oh, and arguably Kabaya is another case with their re-releases exclusive to Japan but otherwise identical.
I was so jealous of my firend that had this set. Years later I've found it in a toy store. You could do that back in the day, since there weren't that many set to go around. It's still built. The sticker is gone though, I had to craft it again.

There is a guy in the Netherlands that does period Lego stickers. Quality is good. Do a search for Lego stickers, you should stumble upon it and get a brand new sticker for your old set(s).
I loved the technical diagrams they used to put on the boxes of old sets.
I never had this particular set, but the general look of the design of the box/instructions is so familiar to me. Feels like several of my early Technic sets.
Happy times, happy memories. Makes my day.
:-)
Ah, Technic B-models. Remember those?

This has TWO with instructions, and two more on the box, one of which is pictured on THE FRONT of the box. The NERVE those designers / marketing people had those days!! False advertsing!!!!

I remember when my brother got this for his birthday. I was jealous. A couple of years ago, I built this in red with spare parts. Very easy to part together. Good build, especially for back in the day.
Classic set from a good year!
I had this in the day, I think my dad got it for me as it was a bit more challenging to the stuff I was building at the time, plus I liked the steering wheels. I got a boxed copy off ebay a couple of years ago for a good price and then my partners work colleague gave her a copy to pass to me which her partner had as a kid! I went on to get the red tractor too in 1980 for my 8th birthday but that was pretty much it as far as Technic was concerned, I went back to houses and city based stuff afterwards...
Still amazes me how many plates and thoughtful design it took to do a single piston in those days. The 6 wheels are interesting, as go-karts have large diameter and width rear wheels, but not twice the width, but opened up the world of 6 wheel mocs if you had other Technic sets as 206 pieces didn't go far even though came with a nice polystyrene open lid box to keep in Mint condition.
I had it when I was young!
@Binnekamp:
Kabaya has actually released sets that were never available elsewhere, like 6964 or 4071.
@PurpleDave: 4071 doesn't say anything about Kabaya in the set page; I'm pretty sure that was some other kind of promotion.
MARIO KART...8!
@TheOtherMike:
Yeah, it looks like Japan had Coke tie-in sets as well, which would explain that and 4464. As far as I know, though, the Slave I was never released outside of the Kabaya promotion. And it contains one unique printed part. The sand-green lever bases were exclusive for two years, and only appeared in one other set.

I knew about that, just didn't think I had to specify 'certain' Kabaya sets there. I was talking about region specific duplicates, like Nokama and Japanese Nokama.
If we're talking region exclusive, there's quite a few.
Off the top of my head all special Rock Raiders mini sets and a lot of the Ninja small sets were Kabaya exclusive. It was also quite common with town polybags to be Kabaya exclusive.

Because there is no Mario Kart 9, there is no Windows 9, and there is no Queen Elizabeth IX of England!
