LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary minifigures overview

Posted by ,

Following the announcement of 40755 Imperial Dropship vs. Rebel Scout Speeder, we now have all seven exclusive minifigures designed for the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars.

These minifigures provided LEGO with a chance to produce a variety of new characters, including some who would be unlikely to appear in a tradtional set, maybe because of their obscurity or role in the story. With that in mind, I have mixed feelings about the seven minifigures chosen for the range.

QT-KT - 40755 Imperial Dropship vs. Rebel Scout Speeder

QT-KT is an unexpected choice. Aayla Secura's droid appears in the D-Squad arc of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and is not a character I have seen anyone request. Even so, QT's vibrant pink colour is distinctive among Astromech droids and the design is well-executed, despite its lack of back printing.

There are many other characters I would prefer from the whole of Star Wars, but QT-KT is a fun choice among the various Astromech droids LEGO could perhaps have selected.

Darth Malak - 75379 R2-D2

5002123 Darth Revan was released in 2014 and that polybag has become extremely valuable, in testament to the popularity of Knights of the Old Republic. Darth Malak is a great companion for Revan and an excellent choice for an anniversary minifigure, as I doubt LEGO would release him elsewhere.

Also, the minifigure looks fantastic, including a new element for Malak's famous cybernetic jaw. Of the seven anniversary minifigures, this is my favourite, although I realise that not everybody will be familiar with Malak.

Saw Gerrera - 75383 Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator

Saw Gerrera, on the other hand, is very well-known and fans have long discussed his absence from the LEGO Star Wars range. Despite appearing in various media, it is difficult to see where Saw would readily fit in a set because he is usually a secondary character or one removed from the main action. On that basis, I think he is a suitable choice for the anniversary series.

I am also satisfied with the minifigure's design, though not everyone agrees. Dark green is not the perfect colour, but no LEGO colour truly matches Saw's armour and this subdued shade is appropriately dark, at least. The level of detail is exceptional, regardless of the colour.

ARC Trooper Fives - 75387 Boarding the Tantive IV

Fives is another beloved character, as one of the most prominent Clone Troopers in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Again, there has been consistent demand for the minifigure, but I think LEGO could have found room for Fives in a standard Clone Wars era set, since he interacts with many Republic vehicles throughout the animated series.

There are issues with the execution too, particularly with Fives' helmet, where the pattern has been broken into sections for ease of printing. The absence of a fabric kama remains an issue as well, although much like Saw, the detailed armour decoration looks marvellous on the whole.

Young Princess Leia and LO-LA59 - 75392 Creative Play Droid Builder

The recent Obi-Wan Kenobi series documented Obi-Wan's rescue of a young Princess Leia from the Inquisitorius. The series attracted a mixed response, but Leia was relatively popular and I believe this version of the heroine warrants minifigure representation, even though there are many other characters I would have prioritised instead.

That is due partly to her bland appearance, compared with other 25th anniversary minifigures, accurate though it is to the show. The presence of LO-LA is welcome though, making effective use of a printed 2x2 slider for Leia's droid companion.

Cal Kestis - 75394 Imperial Star Destroyer

Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor are both excellent video games, but have received little attention from LEGO until now, with only 75335 BD-1. The games' main character, Cal Kestis, certainly needed a minifigure and he looks quite good, although the lack of a fabric poncho and BD-1 is disappointing, especially when Leia's droid is included and the part already exists.

Personally, I think LEGO should develop more sets based on Fallen Order and Survivor. Even something small like a Stinger Mantis Microfighter would be brilliant, but assuming that will not be happening in the near future, Cal is a fine choice for the 25th anniversary collection, despite the minifigure's flaws.

Nien Nunb - 75396 Desert Skiff & Sarlacc Pit

Nien Nunb is perhaps the most oft-requested of all these characters, as a memorable Original Trilogy hero, so I am delighted he is finally available. In addition, this figure is designed exactly as I hoped, introducing a new head component for Sullustans.

However, I think slots in this group should have been reserved for characters ill-suited to other sets, which is not the case for Nien Nunb. Even if we assume that LEGO will never produce a Millennium Falcon based on Return of the Jedi, Nien Nunb could have appeared with another Rebel vehicle from the film, such as an A-wing or B-wing. For instance, 75050 B-wing includes Airen Cracken and Horton Salm, yet neither pilots a B-wing onscreen.

Which is your favourite 25th anniversary minifigure?

QT-KT
Darth Malak
Saw Gerrera
ARC Trooper Fives
Young Princess Leia & LO-LA59
Cal Kestis
Nien Nunb

What do you think of the selection and which character would you choose if LEGO was to do something similar in the future? Let us know in the comments.

I voted for Saw Gerrera. Rogue One was an absolutely amazing film, and he should have gotten a fig back then.

'Save the rebellion, save the dream!'

Gotta love the Darth Malak :o)

But NOT of course the sales and marketing deviousness that lies behind his availability.

By in Canada,

I love Fives and Saw.

But my favorite has to be Cal Kestis as I was able to sell it for $75, which offset the cost of the ISD.

(And for people who say I'm a scalper or whatever, I'm not. I bought a set I wanted that included a fig I did not want and I sold it to someone willing to pay the for what was, at the time, the cheapest Cal Kestis minifig on Bricklink).

Nien Nunb is my favorite. It’s mind boggling that it took lego so long to make a figure of him.

I want to vote for Cal, but it annoys me that lego based his design on concept art rather than the finished game which has been out for 5 years. i know i'm the only one who cares, but still...

Is Darh Maul from the DK book not counted as a 25th anniversary figure? Granted It has 25th anniversary back printing and no stand but would have thought it warrants inclusion.

By in Australia,

I voted for Malak: I'm all for more Old Republic stuff and I'll buy an Ebon Hawk day one.

I quite like the line-up, but I would make a few changes from the perspective that LEGO is including overlooked/fan favourite characters who would otherwise be ill-suited for traditional sets. I'll also assign each replacement to their respective set, and include characters based on their improbability to be included elsewhere,

1. Keep Darth Malak as he is. As much as I want more TOR, Malak's inclusion here probably shows that we won't be getting any sets based on those games anytime soon. I could be very wrong about this, but I think its a safe assumption.

2. Move Cal Kestis to 75392 and include BD-1 with him to make up for L0-LA59. As the Droid Builder is a set aimed at younger audiences, I had a feeling that Leia was included to appeal to that demographic. Cal might not have the biggest following with children, but I'm not entirely they're looking at the figure anyway and it would make for a cheaper way to get him then that overpriced Star Destroyer!

3. Put Mara Jade in 75394. I could have made this whole list Legends characters, but I restrained myself in the end. It would be highly unlikely LEGO would go all out on them, so I picked the single most iconic character from there and left it. Plus, if she's in her Emperor's Hand outfit, she'd fit right in with the rest of the set.

4. Replace QT-KT with Rebel Friend. Would he have crossed their minds? I doubt it, but given how he's kind of iconic in the LEGO Star Wars TCS community, he would make a great choice for the Battle Pack. Not sure if he would have had updated printing or not, which might have weakened his chances of getting picked.

5. Replace Fives with Doctor Aphra. This is based on the fact that, as Fives has arm printing, Aphra should be put in 75387 as I really want to see her electro tattoos. As great as Fives is, LEGO still releases Clone Wars sets now and then, so I think there are more opportunities for him to be included elsewhere.

6. Replace Saw Gerrera with Gregor. The vacuum left by Fives means we need a new Clone (just to appease the Prequel fanboys). There are a few options, but I felt Gregor was a popular enough character who had limited opportunities elsewhere, so he makes the cut. It would also mean a Clone Commando minifigure! I'm sure LEGO would find an opportunity to include Saw somewhere else, especially if he makes any further appearances in Andor Season 2.

7. Replace Nien Nunb with Sidon Ithano. The Crimson Corsair has one of the most interesting character designs from the sequels, and has somewhat of a fan following, so he seems like a logical choice. He would also require a molded head/helmet. I'm not sure if we'll ever get a ROTJ Falcon, but as CapnRex pointed out, I would rather Nien Nunb appear in a Rebel or Resistance Starfighter set in the future instead of an anniversary figure.

Those are just my personal picks for the more likely characters LEGO should have chosen. Other options that almost made the cut are Wat Tambor, Seventh Sister, L3-37, Dryden Vos, Dash Rendar and Kyle Katarn. Not to mention a slew of Old Republic characters, but I resisted in the faint hope that an Ebon Hawk will be released someday.

By in Germany,

I had to vote for Nien Nunb. I’m an OT fan and it leaves me no choice ; )
I don’t like the character of Saw Gerrera, but I have to admit, the minifig is very nicely done.
On a side note, I find it interesting how the accomplished to tick all the boxes:
- Legends
- CW
- OT
- non trilogy movies
- Games
- TV Series
And talking about games, I hope they’ll make an Outlaws set some day.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

@eiffel006: Nothing wrong you did.

@ELH2806: Perhaps that means a finished game version is still possible and hopefully easier available.

Design wise Saw Gerrera is my favourite. But all these figures should be more easily available.
Anniversary figures should be things like gold versions of previously made figures. Nice to haves, not hard to gets.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I've wanted a Nien Nunb minifig forever, and that Darth Malak one is amazing, but I can't justify buying two pricey sets (one of them outrageously overpriced, looking at you Sarlaac) for 2 minifigs. But the resale market for these are bananas. Oh well, glad I'm not a completist! (If I was I'd be looking to shell out a small fortune for the Darth Malgus minifig from the sith interceptor a decade back to complete the Sith Empire set!)

Gravatar

That's a pretty good list! I agree with most of your switches. Fives could have very easily been in a regular set, while Gregor would be far more difficult due to his arc. He also has very unique armor that Lego is unlikely to do otherwise. QT could have been included in an Aayla Starfighter since she is apparently Aayla's droid(although I understand why they wanted her in the lineup).
I like the idea of Rebel Friend, but it would have to be an updated version unless they make a new mold for the CS fleet trooper.

These figures are good. But it leaves me wondering what it would look like if each of these figures had their own set centered around them. It subtly seems like a missed opportunity for the fans, as I don't think they will use these figures again because of the exclusivity.

He's totally a 25th Anniversary figure. He just doesn't have the 4*6 plate, but you could Bricklink one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm just annoyed that there's six 20th anniversary figures (Han, Luke, Obi Wan, Vader, Lando, and Leia) but eight 25th Anniversary (including Maul). This makes for uneven rows of you stack them together.

I guess you could put Maul with the 20A figures because he's a retro style.

I think I should clarify: I don’t think Malek, Leia, or Nunb necessarily look bad. Not in the slightest!

But I would much rather have gotten Dexter Jettster, Master Yaddle, and Boss Nass over a character from a Legends game nobody under 20 has played, a character from a TV show few people actually liked, and a character who could easily appear in literally any Rebel Alliance-based set.

See, but the problem with that (other than the whole "LEGO Star Wars can do building sets only" technicality) is how valuable LEGO Star Wars minifigures are. Sure, LEGO would sell them for $5 as per usual for CMFs, but scalpers would take total advantage of the demand for Star Wars minifigs and sell them at a $3, $5, maybe even $10 markup on Bricklink.

Darth Maul is a 25th anniversary minifigure, but not really part of this group. For the record, I dislike the figure and that would have been the perfect opportunity for Rebel Friend, needing the same number of new printed parts.

By in Netherlands,

I'm a SW fan, a LSW fan, and a fan of several of these characters. Sadly, it seems unlikely I'm going to get any of them. Laughable quality of some of them, availability in overpriced sets that have nothing to do with them and/or minifigure sets in general, absurd market prices (there's no saving us when a minifig goes for half of its set's price). They are supposed to be a celebration of the theme, but to me they emphasize some of the worst parts of current LSW and LEGO in general.

For those that don’t know. It appears that QT-KT is an evolution of R2-KT, which was originally made IRL as a life-size droid in 2005 by a dad whose daughter was dying of brain cancer. Her name was Katie. The story is on Wookiepedia.

So when I see the pink astromech minifig, I see a Star Wars fan’s creation immortalized as canon and a dad’s love for his daughter shared with millions of Star Wars fans.

By in United States,

My spin on swaps:

40755: Replace QT-KT with RX-24 or DJ-R3X.
75379: Replace Darth Malak with Episode 1 C-3PO.
75383: Swap Saw Gerrera with Darth Malak.
75387: Swap Fives with Saw Gerrera.
75392: Replace Young Leia with SK-62O or Gaya.
75394: Replace Cal Ketsis with Mara Jade.
75396: Keep as is, though I'm not convinced he couldn't be put in a later set.

Save Cal Ketsis, Fives, and QT-KT for later sets.
Sequel representation was left out so I slid in SK-62O because there aren't a whole lot of major sequel-era characters without minifigs the only chance for a Galactic Starcruiser set would be a Starship Collection version of the Halcyon and that is an extremely low one, so having the astromech be from what's effectively lost media is more worthy than an astromech that could be put in Clone Wars sets. (The other major Galactic Starcruiser characters are face actors and settling on one appearance would be weird with them being represented by multiple different-looking actors; Lt. Croy can either be a young guy or an old guy, so if they didn't want to go with a humanoid, doing the purple Twi'lek diva would work.)

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Cal and Malak are my favourites. I would love Lego to do this thing again in the future. Or they could just make a Star Wars CMF series, but they are not allowed to, apparently.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

As an OT fan I voted Nien Nunb of course.
I almost bought the set recently, when it was 38% off at Amazon, but even at 50 Euro it still felt too expensive for what you get. So I skipped the order.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Seems like a generally fine lineup, though I'd much prefer Nien Numb just appear in an Episode VI Falcon (long overdue imo, and would give a normal Falcon refresh from the IX variant), and young Leia isn't really necessary at all here.
There's plenty of good alternatives to replace them with like Mara Jade, Rebel Friend (esp. with TCS nostalgia at a high of late), Jedi Revan, Ghost Ben Kenobi or Anakin, and many other worthy choices.

I've some hopes that Nien Numb will reappear in a new Falcon after the evil version is retired, and I'd expect the 2019 version to be retiring soon regardless. His head mold is already made and isn't going to be destroyed for a while, it just makes sense to reuse an already produced mold. Maybe the bright spot of his weird inclusion in the skiff set will be inclining Lego to making an Ep. VI Falcon like I'd prefer.

Last thought, I wish we had a fan vote for one character to appear. It wouldn't be hard, just have Lego present us with a list of 5/8/10 characters and vote on Ideas for a specific one to appear in a set. Would make the anniversary cooler.

Gravatar
By in France,

Well, this selection of minifigis effective as it reaches all kinds of Star Wars fan. However, it's hard to say that we couldn't find normal sets to fit it.
As it was mentionned, Fives may appears in many vehicles or in a desire but not released Umbaran fighter.
Saw Gerrera could have been in the Rogue One U-wing or in a potential Fondor or partisans' X-wing, the first one had memorable screen time in Andor TV show while the other one would be a refreshing alternative for the classic red-five one, with others figs than usual.
I don't play video games but a set with several figs (the Mantis) would be not stupid, even more that there is gorgeous characters in the game (Trilla).
Nien Nunb could go in any starship taking part to the battle of Endor.
I would have been harder to create a set for young Leia (at worst the snowspeeder rescuing her on Nuur). Same for Malak or QT-KT that is still a fun addition to the serie even if not expected.

Anyway, that's a good think for us and a smart commercial strategy from Lego to sell sets.

I missed out on The Old Republic stuff when it came out, and I'd kill for a Darth Revan, so of course i had to vote for Darth Malek. Honestly wish they'd do more Old Republic / KOTOR stuff... Hell, who thats a Star Wars fan, doesn't want an Ebon Hawk model making?

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

These choices are very odd. You need a bit of knowledge to know why these were chosen (because they'll bever get a set of their own). They don't even look cool together because they don't relate (a kid with a Old Republic Sith Lord with a pink droid with a game character and so on).

Regarding the vote, I chose Malak because he looks a cool unique sith (plus a unexpected jaw mold). I'd chose Cal should he came with a poncho, BT and a extra blade. I own only Fives so far.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These minifigs perfectly exemplify the current state of Lego SW. They are mediocre renditions with little real attention to detail sold at incredibly inflated prices.

Only one of these even has arm printing. They all have numerous, glaring deficiencies and missing accoutrement.

Look at the grest printing on just about every minidoll. Look at the detail on the minifigs in Dune, Dreamzzz, or Fortnite.

It is really sad that SW fans are dramatically shortchanged and gouged at the same time. I used to buy the entire SW wave on Day 1. Now, I will wait years for a good deal. I'm not rewarding this horrible group with double my money.

These sets and figs only make sense when you find them in the bargain bin (or significant GWP, points, etc.).

In the last couple years, I've almost purchased more Lego from Costco than my local Lego store. When I do go in, the Lego employees always ask why I haven't been in much lately. Then, they shrug knowingly when I provide the answer.

I suppose Darth is my favorite. He has one new mold and the fewest problems. He could really use some arm printing, especially with his monochrome costume.

QT would probably be the best if she had back printing.

What ever happened to polybag-exclusive Star Wars minifigures? I know that putting minifigs in general-release sets hypothetical puts them into more hands and making certain minifigures GWPs is arguably more predatory, but I feel like some of these would fit better as promos / $5 leftovers than as anniversary commemorative characters. Leia and Lola specifically feels like a promo pack instead of a commemorative trophy. That said, I guess all of them could arguably be limited-edition GWP fodder, but Leia in particular feels more like a 40300.

Didn't the game just get a rerelease recently though? I'd say that's more than enough justification to make a minifig of an important character from a well-loved game, especially given that this is specifically a 25th anniversary tie-in (thus lining up with the age range you just named).

(Disclaimer, I haven't played KotOR either lol, even though I'm the right age to have.)

They did that for the 20th anniversary, and they were glorious.

EDIT: There's also a 25th anniversary Darth Maul in the same vein as the 20th anniversary minifigs, but he's exclusive to a book.

I like Saw Gerrera as a character and wanted the minifig (fits in with the U-wing), so I bought the Inflitrator (which I otherwise wouldn't have). I wanted the R2-D2 to go with Wall-E, so I got a Darth Malak that I don't care about. I sort-of wanted Nien Numb and sort-of wanted the Sarlac Pit, so waited for a -35%+ deal to get that. I like the astromech, but I don't think I'll be buying another set that I don't really want.

See, him I know. He was voiced by the inimitable Brian Blessed, the Beard That Walks Like A Man, who definitely deserves a bigfig of his own. He's the unkillable octogenarian who routinely scales mountains and once punched out the Dalai Lama in a friendly boxing-match.

That man is a legend and a treasure, even IF Boss Nass was kind of a garbage character."

I want them to make a Boss Nass minifig with short legs like the first Hasbro action figure of the character.

"I'm unsurprised no one else voted for QT, but I just love that hot pink color"

Well, she got 5% of the vote, which is 2.5x as much as Leia. So at least fiur other people appear to have voted for her. Also, she’s probably the favorite of at least some of the design team, again, because they got cake.

I don’t ever buy a set I don’t need just for an exclusive mini figure but for Nien Numb I’m gonna have to. Just need a General Lando Calrissian now too.

General Lando came in 2009's Home One, set 7754

I don't think we will be getting another one anytime soon.

"I like QT-KT the most, mainly due to astormech bias."

She's my second favorite (I do love astromechs in colors other than white!), but while Malak isn't the only reason I want 75379, he's definitely increased my desire for it by a huge margin.
