Rare items up for auction at Catawiki

Posted by ,

Online auction house Catawiki is currently hosting an auction of extremely rare LEGO items, including 24 carat gold cufflinks and 2x4 bricks, one-off history books, a minifigure business card collection and a George Lucas minifigure which currently has a bid of €6000.

The auction ends tomorrow evening: you'll need deep pockets to participate!

Also ending tomorrow evening is an auction of hard-to find items, including employee gifts and SDCC exclusives, and a private collection of sets signed by their designers.

Do you get Insiders points?

Bet they'll find all those current bids are fake as all of them are just ridiculously high, and most things only have single bids.

I feel like my dark age is a GWP in itself.

Batman agrees, it is very very dark.

I never understand buying or selling at catawiki, since both parties have to pay a %

What? No rare Minidolls? Shocked!

By in Austria,

I bought from catawiki a few times, but not anymore their "buyers protection fee" is just short of a scam. They are also extremely slow to respond on anything.

Yea, they take a significant cut of the sale and I noted they often have very unrealistic "expert" estimates. The hidden minimum bid thing is also a joke.

By in Italy,

So, based on your experience where would you suggest buying or selling LEGO is better? I'm asking because sooner or later I'm going to have to sell some items. Suggestions are welcome, thank you.

Sorry my only experience is "marktplaats" and that is dutch only.
I do know that the basic city sets (police and other a dime a dozen) are hard to sell online.
A flea market worked better for those.

By in United Kingdom,

I had an email from catawiki yesterday about having to agree to something or other. I haven't looked at the site for years. So I looked at some LEGO, supposedly from UK. I think the postage they were charging was almost £19 for a small set. I won't be logging on again.

Whats worse is that someone thinks that a brick thats only plated with 14K gold is worth nearly £10,000.

You could litterally buy and have one made out of solid 24K gold for less then a 5th of that price.

As I understand it those long service bricks are solid 14kt gold. I have seen those bricks in auctions before.

The listings on this auction are deceptive (the headline says 24kt, the summary says plated, the full description says solid 14kt). I guess someone either copied and pasted an incorrect description or more likely it was written by someone who didn't know the difference between those things. But it is clear in the pictures they are not just plated as the bricks have hallmarks on them.

"You could litterally buy and have one made out of solid 24K gold for less then a 5th of that price. "

You could certainly buy the gold, even at the current super high price. Buying the time and effort of a craftsman to create a mould and make the brick is another matter. And at the end, you would have a nice gold brick, but it would not have the scarcity value of the Lego long service bricks.

I have some solid silver Lego bricks and I would love to add a gold one to my collection. My pockets would need to be considerably deeper than they currently are, though...

Yes, we have "marketplace" on Facebook here, too. Provided I'd have to be a FB user, which I'm not, it would be very local as much as an eventual flea market. But the secondary market around here is not that much interested in collectable Lego sets. So in order to sell my boxes I guess I'll have to rely on online markets and auctions like ebay or catawiki and pay their commissions.
