40698 Books Are My Passion available now
Posted by CapnRex101,
The long-awaited 40698 Books Are My Passion is now available with purchases exceeding £120, $130 or €130 on LEGO.com.
Huw reviewed the set a few days ago and was certainly impressed. The promotion ends on November 11th, or until stock runs out, which will probably be quite soon given the positive response to this set.

I secured mine with a few small HP sets and a PaB order - (I always have a PaB order waiting until there is a reasonably good deal available).
Merci j'avais oublier, j'ai commander "Le bureau de poste du Père Noel avec le camion de livraison et un peut de PaB.
Hope it holds out until the 1st... Shame the Botanic Garden isn't available for pre-order!
Cannot see this lasting until 11/11 given what has happened with past popular GWPs but let's see what happens on Friday.
The only Lego exclusives I want to pick up at this time are over the 200€ mark so this is not the right time for them, and there's only a couple interesting small sets on sale - I guess I'm off to PaB to put something together!
I’ll wait for the Black Friday / Insiders Weekend GWPs.
Why so anticipated and why do people think this will sell out? For me this is like the most boring GWP of the year. A lady reading a book in a chair in front of a bookcase. With all respect to the winner of the competition, but not for me.
Also I can't see my kids fighting over this one.

Same here. I showed it to my kids but they were not interested.
And while I think it looks nice I too feel zero desire to own this.

Hoping it lasts until at least the 3rd as I cannot get to a store until then :(
Let's face it, kids are not the market for this one. I don't think such a sedentary scene would hold their interest so we can't really use kids as a yardstick (or metre stick for Ridgeheart)
It's a display set which, IMHO, is more aimed at older fans. Judging by the comments on the review, I think this will be popular - despite the fact it's not everyone's cup of Earl Grey
Only time will tell

Sure beats the mini shop modular things!
Just in time for the Family Reunion set to be "temporarily unavailable". Great :\

But you didn't let them finish.... what they actually said was,
"But Dad... we're no interested in hearing about how BlueBrixx and Cobi are so much better again. We just want to play with our proper Lego"
Echoing what others have said,
This is not aimed at kids.
To me this feels like it is aimed at the sort of person who loves to curl up with a good book,
And since I am that sort of person, this appeals.
Would be nice for the botanical fans if it last till 2/3 noverber.

Most Boring? 40593 says hold my beer
A real book lover would have books in piles on the floor, all around the room.

Heresy! Books deserve better. Each one must have its reserved place on the shelves and no matter what your sorting mechanism is, each book must be easily retrievable almost instantly from the lot.
To me, this set is the epitome of 'display set' - very (very) static. I certainly like this much better than the miniature store fronts - as always, to each his/her own...
(I have very little need for this set in particular but since I have sets and PaB on my wanted list, might as well buy them when the GWP suits me - I got the latest store front which I did not wanted but I definitely wanted the double points for an exclusive Lego set.)

Surely the reserved place for a pile of books is replacing a broken bed leg!

"I guess it looks as if you're reorganizing your books. What is this though? Chronological?"
- "No..."
"Not alphabetical..."
- "Nope..."
"What?"
- "Autobiographical."
"No fucking way."
- "Yep. Let me tell ya how I got from Twain to Tolstoy in just 25 moods. And, if I want to find the story "Out of Season" by Hemmingway, I have to remember that I bought it for someone in the Fall of 1983 pile - but, didn't give it to them for personal reasons."
"That sounds..."
- "Comforting."
"Yes."
- "It is."
(if it wasn't obvious from the authors I randomly picked, I don't read much....)
I like this, just put my order in. I have 10 bookcases spread throughout my house...15-20 years ago they were all full of books, but as time goes on a lot of the shelves have been converted to Lego and the books have been donated to the library. Probably about 50-50 now with books and Lego... but the eReader is over 1100 books!!
Hmm... There are authors other than Haynes... who knew?

Not really. They both love reading, and both have outgrown regular LEGO, so this set could have been right up their alley, but they found it a bit bland, and I had to agree.
Sure, it's a freebie, but I would have to buy overpriced sets at RRP directly from LEGO on order to obtain it. And since my "to get" list of current sets (of any manufacturer by the way) is empty at the moment, I wouldn't even know what to buy in order to qualify for the GWP.
My LEGO purchases of the past few months have been LEGOLAND Town and Classic Space as well as old Technic sets via ebay and Bricklink.

to name but a few.

I would honestly much rather read one of my actual books than build this. The mere idea of books does not excite me. The Great Gatsby put me to sleep about a dozen times before I finally got past the first page, and I’ve had to write about As I Lay Dying for school credit.
@watcher21:
Nope. 40593 builds a coral reef.
@HOBBES:
First you run out of shelves, and then you run out of places to put shelves. Plus, nobody makes floor-to-ceiling DVD shelves, which have the ideal depth and spacing to stuff to the gills with MMPs.
Lego is my passion actually. Although reading books are too.
@PurpleDave
Regarding 40593 yes it does have a few nice builds but trying to build multiple was a pain.
It does have a few good parts, so in the end I parted mine (coudn't sell my spares)
Wish they picked a more demure MOC. Black borders ain't it.

Whether that's heresy or not depends on the book or books in question.
Easy pass…..much like a real book…yaaaawwwn!

Extremely fine list!!!
I so truly wish that Lego will - eventually - create a theme called 'Legacy' or something like that. And in that theme, all we are gonna get are remakes. Stuff like 10497, 21322, 10320, 10001, 10000, etc...

They tried that with the Legends line, but it apparently wasn't a very big success. The market has changed since then, so it is possible that another such go could have a shot, but I would expect such a line to remain D2C.

Plus, a main problem would be retired parts. As much as I love my 10497 (actually I have got three...), some parts choices I didn't like so much, especially the engines. Those old cone pieces were just so iconic to me. The new ones look a little weird, especially with the red glow elements (which I chose to leave off by the way).
Then again, I don't really need exact remakes anyway. I really loved the City Space sets this year (60429, 60430, 60431). Reminiscent of some of the old Classic Space vehicles, yet updated for the modern times. And lovingly designed with no expense spared (great prints and no stickers), yet still affordable. THAT is the LEGO that I love - and it goes to show that if they want they can do it. That for example Star Wars has to make do with far less love and attention to detail (at much higher prices) just shows how little they care about quality there versus simple profit. And to be honest, one can't even blame them. As long as Star Wars fans are willing to accept being treated like that and still pay whatever price (Sail barge anyone?), why should LEGO change. If I was in a similar situation I probably wouldn't either.
I like this GWP but my issue is I really don't want to end up with multiples of it as there will be a lot of other GWP's coming up for Black Friday and the Holidays. I placed a PAB order to insure I get one in case it is sold out before the Botanical Garden becomes available to purchase. Now I have the dilemma that they just announced the retirement of a few thousand PAB parts so I need to place another order for the ones I want before they go out of stock so will end up with at least one more of this GWP and possibly a third if it is still available on Friday when the Botanical Garden becomes available to Insiders.

Where are PAB retirements announced?
I really like it but I'm not ordering anything before the 1st of November.
Hopefully it'll last until then. Otherwise I'd rather buy it on BrickLink and cancel the planned LEGO order.
I'm just hopeful it isn't crazy expensive on bricklink. I don't have $130 right now, so can't order anyway, but most sets I want are way above the threshold, so need to save up with the holidays.
But I like it otherwise. And maybe won't be too difficult to just piece together anyway.
I think it should be fine until Nov 1st. Not too confident after about 00:15 though!
