Review: 5009045 Chronometer

Posted by ,

The second of two new sets that'll be available in the Rewards Centre from Black Friday, 29th November is 5009045 Chronometer, which you'll be able to obtain in exchange for 2,400 points, the equivalent of about £15/$16.

This LEGO model of a marine timepiece is the perfect accompaniment to 10335 The Endurance, which is also released that day.

Summary

5009045 Chronometer, 150 pieces.

The perfect accompaniment to The Endurance

  • Attractive gold inlaid lid
  • Looks great opened and closed
  • Clock face could be better

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Chronometers were first used in the early 18th century to determine longitude to aid navigation at sea. They were precision instruments often housed in expertly crafted decorative boxes, so the LEGO rendition here is suitably elaborate, with gold tiles inlaid into the 'wood' lid, and 'metal ties' in the corners to hold it together securely.

Opening the box reveals the instrument, which consists of a clock face printed on a 6x6 radar dish, with a 2x2 clock face tile in the middle. As a result, it doesn't look quite right: the clock hands should, of course, be much longer.

The mechanism tilts in one plane: a real one would also tilt in the other plane, to counteract the ship's movement and keep the clock level.

It's a nice little model that will display well next to The Endurance, whose crew would have relied on a device like this for navigation on its Antarctic voyage.

It'll be available in Rewards Centre from Black Friday, 29th November, as will 5008897 Tic Tac Toe. I hope you have a lot of points saved up!

I can't be the only one who thought this was a Crafting Table at first glance

Neither this nor the airtank-less Tic Tac Toe is worth 16€ to me.

By in United Kingdom,

That's a surprisingly big box for a surprisingly small clock.

By in United Kingdom,

The 6x6 radar dish should have been a 4x4. It would have looked better. It might also have allowed enough room for a second pivot ring, making a Cardan gimbal that can compensate for the side-to-side motion of a ship, not just its front-and-back pitching.

By in Canada,

In my opinion these sets they make available through the Rewards Centre are better if they include minifigures. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case most of the time.

By in United Kingdom,

£15 equivalent for this? Looks, size and part count wise, it should be sub £10 at worst.

By in United States,

If these (along with Tic Tac Toe) were GWPs, I'd be happy to get them, but not spending Insider points for either. It's an interesting way Lego is going about these sets. If you don't have enough insider points, there's no way to get them, unless you quickly buy some sets to build up your points.

By in Poland,

Imho box looks great but clock tile is making it weird.
Agree that it could be better with just one printed disk 4x4

I don't have time for this weak nonsense, and I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for Lego to do a proper Classic Space GWP!

By in United Kingdom,

Just doesn't work for me, glad it's points and not gwp. It needs to be more complex, it seems very simplisitic.

Did you just Dikembe them?

By in Netherlands,

Very meh. Box looks okayish except for the parts in wrong colors, but the tiny clock inside looks absurd. But most disappointing is the only half-assed mechanism. I would have much preferred a proper mechanism without the box.....

By in United Kingdom,

For those interested in this set and the history on how Chronometers were used at sea to solve the longitute problem, I strongly recommend Dana Sobel's book "Longitute".

By in New Zealand,

I'm sure this would be quite a good gift for people who know what it is.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A gear on the side that you turn to move the clock hands would be cool, there should be plenty of space in the box to hide all the mechanism.

Endurance had 24 chronometers aboard and Frank Worsley had the last one in the lifeboat James Caird. He kept it in his jacket so it was dry and warm.

The 2x2 clock tile is such a weird feature in an otherwise interesting model.

Limited Edition like Mr. Gold.

And, a candle that smells like vahjayjay?

Too much? Too soon?

Nice set and really goes with the Endurance theme...but wish it was another GWP, not something I have to spend my points on.

The clock face is disappointing, but I'm definitely planning to get this, nautical buff that I am.

I didn't think that, but now I can't unsee that.

Since I tried to slowly disassemble the Simpson house roof and broke a lot of parts (ironically, my young son was beside me playing with my old classic space sets without concern for the parts), I boycotted sets with reddish brown parts. Is the issue resolved?

It was fixed around about 2018.

Sometime around 2019-2020ish, they announced that they’d been aware of the problem, that they’d determined the cause, that they’d implemented a fix, and that they waited to say anything about the whole affair until they were certain the fix was going to work. So my personal cutoff is now 2018+, and I only buy reddish-brown/dark-brown/dark-red from OPAB. With Bricklink, there’s no way to guarantee the age of any parts you order, unless they were only released in one year.

@Ridgeheart: Wait, I thought all you did was post innocent comments.

@Yellowcastle: Innocent? Is that supposed to be funny? An obtuse post... a disgusting visual which could barely stand up; a comment which if you saw it on the street, you'd point it out to your friends so that they could join you in mocking it; a comment, which if you saw it while you were eating, you wouldn't be able to finish your meal. After it, I responded to the lawyer ( @StyleCounselor ) and I know you both must have been secretly thanking me for that one. This is a man who dedicated his life to spending money by buying Day 1 with every breath that he could muster to keeping GWPs and rewards lost on the streets!

When going through old Random [Whatever] of the day articles, which is something I do fairly often, I don't see any of @NotProfessorWhymzi's posts. I know the posts were there, because l see responses to them. They're still logging in, so the account wasn't deleted, just the posts, apparently. I miss the bios they did for the City minifigs that would show up as RMotD.

@TheOtherMike:
Just because you can't see them doesn't mean they were deleted. If you can still see other posts from someone, but one or two have disappeared, then those posts have clearly been deleted. If _every_ post goes away, that could just be the result of a shadow ban, where the poster can still post, and sees their own posts when logged in, but anyone logged into a different account, or not logged in at all, won't see them. It's a step below actually having your account deleted, but presumably a shadow ban can be reversed, and any affected posts might revert to normal.

You could say that about most VIP redeem sets, there seemed to be a bug or a intentional error. From VIP rewards A BACKPACK ONLY 100 VIP POINTS ! ! !

Don't joke about shadow bans. The worst of all bans.

Speaking of which- my barking at walls and shaking my fist at Providence is not provoking the attention I'm used to. A lot of things seem to be going haywire in our topsy-turvy world. Is God shadow banning me?

They get trickier, now. Short of logging out and checking to see if your own posts still show up, if nobody is responding to you or Liking your comments, you can't really know if you've been shadow-banned, if everyone has just used the Ignore function on you, or if people just haven't found your comments interesting of late.

I'm REALLY not ready to checkout just to see if God is shadow-banning me. I think I'd rather just get used to the lack of response. ;)
