Once again we get a set that claims to have a three-digit set number, but in reality only has two, as the VSotW. The first was https://brickset.com/article/109696/vintage-set-of-the-week-basic-building-set
Back in those years, the only way to do snot was to attach brick/plate to a wheel. I guess you could also wedge a plate between studs but this has since been declared an illegal technique.
@TheOtherMike:
Seems fair enough, considering the VIP numbers work the same way.
I love the packaging on 60s and 70s sets. Bold colours and they show lots of possibilities. Although obviously simpler times with a more limited colour and parts palette.
Seems like in these days the red and white pieces were most common and yellow and blue were 'rare'!
Basically this Basic Set was great way to have a strong base of Red and White bricks.
That lighthouse looks impressive!
Those 2D builds of people also don't look half bad. Much bigger than what you'd find on brick buckets from this current century.
I’m trying to work out what the mechanisms in the bottom right one are actually doing; there’s the obvious cross piece for a crank on one side, that turns a wheel up on the bridge, is that linked to the other wheel and that then does something to the blue box thing?
Basic indeed
The name says everything
Once again classic goodness. Nothing fancy, but so many possibilities. As a toy, way better than nowadays 4+ sets and even Classic sets, which still contain way too many quite speicialized pieces.
Shame PART 7049bc01 Brick Special 2 x 4 with Wheel Holder ended in 1992, as one of the key parts to making this set more interesting together with the official Lego elastic band before Technic gears.
