Review: 60447 Off-Road Mountain Truck
Posted by CapnRex101,
LEGO City tends to avoid bigger sets in January, reserving them for the summer. However, there are normally some interesting vehicles released in January and 60447 Off-Road Mountain Truck seems like a great example, including plenty of detail for its modest size.
The sand green and black colour scheme looks excellent and I love the boxy shape of the truck, which seems pretty realistic. There are some interesting functions as well, so much to like for the price of £17.99, $19.99 or €19.99.
Summary
60447 Off-Road Mountain Truck, 221 pieces.
£17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99 | 8.1p/9.0c/9.0c per piece.

This is an impressive set all round, especially given its functional and realistic winch
- Appealing colour scheme and shape
- Ample interior
- Good functions
- Only one minifigure
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
Minifigure
Several Jungle Exploration sets were released in 2024 and there are some similarities between this set and those. The minifigure's torso, for instance, returns from the past range and features a detailed dark tan jacket, with a GPS device attached. While new designs are always welcome, I think re-using this element works.
The head and hair piece are common as well, but again, they look nice to me. More notable is the map printed on a 2x3 tile, which matches the style of those found in the Jungle Exploration subtheme, but is complete on this occasion and shows a route into a mountainous region.
The Completed Model
In the past, City vehicles have sometimes been needlessly complex and unrealistic, whereas this model is anything but. The overall design reminds me of some older Land Rovers and its size is reasonable, providing plenty of opportunities for play, without becoming absurdly huge beside the driver. Moreover, I like the livery, especially with its reddish orange accents.
Off-road vehicles are frequently equipped with winches, used to drag them through extremely rough terrain. I love how the winch is integrated on this model, exactly where they are located on real trucks. Admittedly, that does spoil the radiator to some degree, although its dark colour obfuscates the lack of authentic texture.
The winch is not connected to any kind of crank, but can still be unravelled and reeled back in, thanks to ridges around the edge of the spool. Also, the string is comfortably strong enough to hold the truck, even though it is only attached with studs at either end. The bonnet, meanwhile, features an opening flap controlled using the snorkel, which pushes the flap from beneath.
Unfortunately, the decorative mountains and trees are formed using stickers, which came as a surprise because similar pieces are printed in 60453 Donut Truck. However, these designs are attractive and I like the dark bluish grey details on the stickers, which complement the boxes on the roof and the grey wheel hubs.
The roof is removable and there is enough room for two minifigures in the cab, seated side by side. I am satisfied with only one minifigure, but sets of this size often contain two, so perhaps there should have been another, considering the generous room available inside.
Speaking of which, there is plenty of detail as well. The steering wheel and printed dashboard look superb, while a sleeping bag is represented by a stickered 2x4 tile in the back. Otherwise, the cab's interior is upholstered in dark tan and looks nice, while light bluish grey tiles finish the area behind.
This part of the vehicle looks good from outside too, thanks particularly to the angled corners and another sticker. Similarly, the twin exhausts are a nice inclusion and I like the mudguards' curved shape. Functional suspension would have been great, of course, although that is not a feature I expected here.
A generous variety of accessories is provided, including a wrench, a printed compass, a torch and a medical box, plus a banana and water bottle. However, the crates themselves are more interesting to me because these elements have never appeared in dark bluish grey before.
Overall
60447 Off-Road Mountain Truck is a set that accomplishes exactly what it intends to do. This vehicle looks fantastic and also features some enjoyable functions, with the winch a particular highlight. In addition, the variety of accessories is ideal for play, although maybe that highlights the need for a second figure.
The stickers are a little disappointing as well, compared with several of the other new City sets, which tend to use printed elements. Nonetheless, I am very pleased with this set and the price of £17.99, $19.99 or €19.99 feels reasonable to me, so the off-road truck is certainly worthy of consideration.

Looks like a neat set. I am really baffled that Lego is actually capable of producing a non-licensed car.
Some kind of animal would have been fine...
I realize that I have different preferences. For me, "only one minifigure" is a positive thing, not a negative item.
I really like this, will probably pick it up to support future lego overloading products. I do wish the back was more kitted out, though I appreciate the side by side seating at the front, but still, most overlanders have tons of gear onboard. a single sleeping bag feels a little under geared, especially considering hes got everything but the kitchen sink loaded onto the roof.
Could probably build a kitchen sink out of it come to think of it!
It looks a bit too simplistic, not providing much of a building challenge for an adult, but might be worth it for a few of the new elements.
Really like this little Land Rover. What a pity that those mountain+forest decorations or at least the sleeping bag are not printed. Was hoping that last years trend of printing more parts in City sets would continue, especially in the "Great Vehicles" line-up.
Would love to see a photo of this next to the 40650 Land Rover. Do you happen to have that one too, @CapnRex101?

I'm not sure any set this cheap would be able to provide much of a building challenge for an adult, even if that was the objective (which for the City theme, it isn't). You can only get but so complex with a couple hundred parts.
This was my first purchase of 2025 since I’m an overland poser in real life with an orange Toyota 4Runner!
I like the design and stoutness. Great attention to detail with the winch, roof rack and snorkel air intake. The mechanism to pop open the hood/bonnet is very satisfying.
I hate those oversized tires.
Great design though.
Nice car and overall seems like a good set. Just the price.....not too long ago this would have been Speed Champions territory, with way more pieces and licensed. Or the Hamburger truck mentioned in the review, same price, a bit less pieces but seems a bit bigger and having two minifigs and prints.....dare I say this should have been a €15 set?
Quite nice. Is that bonnet piece new?
Something about the colour blocking doesn't quite work for me, I think it's the stripes of black, sand green and reddish orange near the roof. I'd prefer this without the orange I think. But other than that, it's a neat set and I'm intrigued by that bonnet piece.
Cool. I wish that 76958 had a winch on the front like this set does; my only complaint about that otherwise perfect set.
"It's gripped, it's sorted, let's off-road!"
Does that map piece line up with the map pieces introduced in to jungle exploration city line from last year?
I usually buy most City great vehicles including the very cool 2023’s 40582 4x4 Ambulance and 2024’s 60404 Burger Truck and 60405 Emergency Helicopter.
This years crop of 60447 Off Road Truck, 60453 Lifeguard truck, and 60451 Ambulance are just so bland, in my opinion. 60452 Donut-Doughnut-Weights and Measures Truck is okay. For 2025, 60461 Tractor is the cream of the crop.

Hoping Lego's next safari animal will be a rhino

yes.
I like how the sunroof has not only returned since the 90s in the form of a City piece, but it has already been used as a bonnet too. That´s quite fun to see.
The hood switch is elite

Since it's called the Off-Road Mountain Truck a goat would've been a good addition.
Built this plus the Ambulance, Donut Truck the other day. One thing I noticed was the instructions seemed to have been simplified with one step every second page. Similar to the 4+ sets. Kinda annoying
It's solid, but kinda bland. I think, kids will love accessories it comes with.

Agreed. Though there are still a number of safari animals missing (giraffes, zebras, hippos, rhinos and gazelles please). A larger subtheme to complete these would be better for those, but certainly an animal in this set would have made it one to definitely buy rather than one to pass.
I was thinking it should have included the eagle from the Fun in the Outdoors minifig set from a few years back. The guy has binoculars and it looks as though he is driving in the mountains.
This would've been the perfect opportunity to include a goat. Seriously. 60267 Safari Off-Roader had a whole lioness!

I agree, an animal, probably a small one, I think would have helped add something more to this set. Before we got pictures for this I kept picturing a bird included with this for some reason, lol!
When I saw this, I couldn't help but think of how I could modify this and change the minifigure to DCI Vera Stanhope.

Definitely! Either a mountain goat, an alpine ibex or a bighorn sheep would have been fantastic.
Will get this nonetheless as this set was already on my 'to buy' list even before the review.
Personally, I am not too fond of the reddish-orange stripe and will try with white or flame yellowish orange.
Great set in every way as far as I am concerned but does anyone else out there think the quality of the plastic differs from normal?
The reason there's prints on 60451 and not this set is because Lego considers stickers too complicated for 5 year olds now. This is especially evident with them changing 5+ sets to use 4+ instructions (the Doughnut Truck uses about 3x the amount of paper it needs), which seems wholly unnecessary with the new two page spread advertising the building app.
Oddly they're now printing the rounded-square Mario tiles across the board, but not the circular tiles which are harder to align?
As nice as the car looks overall, every time I see these new trans-milk windscreen and window pieces, I am reminded how much I hate them. And I know that I won't buy this set or any other for that matter where these trans-milk pieces are such a prominent feature.
Yuck.
This even more so as I have bought many sets I missed out on from the 80s on ebay recently. And these all feature those beautiful and crystal clear trans-clear pieces LEGO produced until a couple of years ago. There is just no comparison to that fugly material they use nowadays.
I hope at some point Bricklink / the AFOL community will start classifying new trans-clear as a different color. It seems as different from the original as grey / bluish grey.

I agree, this will make for a great gift to my father nevertheless.

Thought so.
I had no real interest in this set before, but seeing that hood function has me tempted to get it.

5x6, and looks like the hood is reversible so it would function properly as a moonroof. It's sad that they got the headlights mounted sideways to accommodate those garish dark-orange stripes.

76908?
One person heading out into the ooloo with no spare tire seems like we may be seeing them in the news at some point in the not so distant future...

If you place it above the grid of 4 from last year it seems like the coast may line up, although the red panda map has a dotted line heading North and there isn't an adjoining dotted line on this tile.
(Also, as others have mentioned, some sort of small mountain/forest animal would have added some great play value. A skunk in the bed? An eagle flying overhead? even a cheeky squirrel?? But I'm guessing that budget went on all the cargo).
Finally, the opening bonnets are back, having disappeared in the early '90s, before I was old enough.
A bit strange, though, as TLG is supposedly not promoting fossil fuels anymore?
I wonder how this truck would look next to the Ideas A-Frame cabin and Bricklink Designer Program Camping adventure...
I'll probably pick this up at some point. In this case I prefer stickers as I'll have the choice to apply them or not. I think I agree with that upper orange stripe but that easy enough to fix. It does seem like some off-road elements are missing...A brush guard, spare tire, for instance.
Always love rugged, boxy, outdoors-y vehicles. May pick this one up.
Sad to see stickers though. With a vehicle like this, I'd like to drive it through the mud and I worry about the integrity of the stickers.

Different line (Speed Champions instead of City), different age range (8+ instead of 6+), more parts (262 vs 221), and more stickers (13 vs 5, and 13 is very low for Speed Champions at that). That's also an old Speed Champions set (2022); 2025 Speed Champions sets are $27 to this set's $20.

I know. I was responding to the comment, which if you read it, references “any set,” even those designed to be more complex building experiences. Ie, Speed Champions. And 76908 retired two weeks ago, hardly making it an “old” set. I saw a copy at Target the other day. But thanks for playing!

And you're missing the point, which is that if 76908 came out this year like 60447 did, it'd cost $27 and fail the "this cheap" part of the post you were responding to.
Nice looking set. I would've added the CMF series 16 compass piece from the backpacker too, would've felt really complete with that piece included.

Ulu - The (normally remote) countryside. Also known as 'bondu'.
One of the many terms that hark back to the British Army's long, hot, fly-blasted engagements in foreign climes - Ulu is from a Malay word meaning 'up river' and is commonly mistaken for jungle which is utang - which more accurately means forest.

@macwhit2017:
Since the OP is an Aussie, I would have expected them to call it the Outback, and I was assuming “ooloo” had some tie to “Uluru”.

Yeah, my mom bought one when we visited Alaska (hasn’t used it once, though). However, it’s always spelled “ulu”, and never “ooloo”.
@PurpleDave: Yeah, but the one in the comment I responded to was spelled "ulu," which is what made me think of the knife.
I like this truck but the 8-wide Speed Champions have ruined me on 6-wide vehicles. 8-wide seem more proportioned to the minifigs. Great set though!

Yes, me too! Maybe they could add eagle 6359047
man, what a fantastic City kit. imo the only thing that would make it better would be the addition of a dog. i suppose i could acquire one from a different set and add it to this instead.
is this the same scale as the newer Speed Champions sets? it almost looks like it from the pictures.
