That is not what New Zealand Defence Force soldiers look like.

Honestly, NZ is not the first place that comes to mind when I think of lakes that are infested by icebergs.

I was actually joking about the fact that the Hobbit and LotR movies were filmed in NZ.

By in United States,

That catapult piece looks undersized in Advent Calendar builds; it looks ridiculous here. That said, if I'd seen this one, I might have picked it up; as the non-catapult parts are pretty nice-looking.

Tasman Lake has icebergs.

So was I.

@TheOtherMike:
It's useful for lobbing projectiles about as far as you could reach over the wall and drop them.

@TeriXeri:
Nevertheless. I'm watching Moana right now, and I'm not seeing many parkas.

By in United States,

Always thought this was a weird choice for a polybag set. Would've much rather had the Rohirrim soldier from 9471 with an appropriately-themed build from The Two Towers or something; more appealing minifigure and faction in my eyes.

By in Netherlands,

I got this one from Lego World once. Even at the time it was rare and made some good money. I think I made more with it than the entrance fee aready. It was probably a GWP originally, hence the rarity. A shame, as it defeats the purpose of a battle pack polybag like this. It even has both a weapon rack AND a small catapult!

In hindsight it was a shame I didn't keep it, or at least one of the Legolas polybag copies I found, which were a money doubler despite not even being all that rare at the time.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

One of the few middle earth sets I do not own.
Others are the Legolas polybag, and conversation exclusives.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A highly elaborate helmet to appear a couple of times and then never again

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Nice set and like many good polybags nowhere available.

By in United States,

I can hear the music so clearly. Probably one of the most annoying earworms from The Hobbit considering Laketown is not that likable. It's the anti Rohan/Rohirrim theme from Lord of the Rings.

Great book, terrible film.

Interesting, I just rewatched The Battle of the Five Armies today. It's still not great...

That’s actually accurate to the spirit of the book. Tolkien explicitly wrote “…it was called the Battle of the Five Armies, and it was very terrible.”

@BabuBrick:
There weren’t any Rohirrim in the Hobbit trilogy.

@Binnekamp:
Availability is listed as TRU in the US. Whether or not it was a GWP, I do remember buying a handful (5-6?) so it wasn’t exclusively a GWP. However, it didn’t stick around long. If nobody else got it, that makes sense, since the bulk of what shipped probably ended up on BL, eBay, etc., feeding the international market for completionists and army-builders. Most of the rest probably went to domestic army-builders.

Availability of polybags was messy at that time. I had to order 30072 and 30073 from the UK because they didn’t appear to have made it to the US. I also had to order 30211 from the far end of the country because the only source I was able to identify in the US was LEGOLAND, and I don’t think our LDC had opened yet. Even now, there’s an entire line of regular Creator polybags that doesn’t appear to be available anywhere in the US.

I didn't even bother going to see that one in the theaters. I enjoyed An Unexpected Journey, but The Desolation of Smaug was enough of a disappointment that I lost interest in completing the trilogy. There's a line from The Fellowship of the Ring that perfectly sums up Peter Jackson making a paperback into a whole trilogy of movies: "Like butter stretched over too much bread."

The Pacific is a rather large ocean.

That being said, so-called New Zealand and any associated lakes are completely the figment of fantastic yet deluded imaginations.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was able to pick up a couple from TRU. But they weren’t readily available.

I loved the purple and silver.

I completely agree with you. First one was easily the best.

When my family watches The Hobbit movies, we go past certain scenes (a LOT of scenes), and it makes the whole experience a lot more enjoyable.

With LotR, they had to deal with terminal bloat, since there was probably enough untouched material to make a fourth film (and a fourth Expanded Edition film, in case you really wanted the story to last 16 hours). And none of that stuff advanced the plot, which is why it got dumped like week-old fish. With The Hobbit, they had the opposite problem. There’s zero character development for most of the Dwarves, and the plot is a string of loosely connected vignettes. It worked for the Rankin Bass film, but if you want to do a live-action version that’ll stand beside LotR, you need more meat.

Well, fortunately for him, he’ll be long dead of old age by the time Sauron canonically becomes a serious threat again.

Yeah, it's actually a studio set that was put up for LotR and the Hobbit, as well as various other films, I just work here.

Instead of the weapons holder if alternative pieces had being used to make a larger 25 piece catapult with 4 wheels it would have being quite cool.

@PurpleDave: Ah yes...but that depends on who's 'aiming' that 'canon'...(points at "The Rings of Power"...:))

By in United States,

You kill like dozens of these in LEGO The Hobbit lol. It had been years since I saw the films when I played the game so I was wondering if there was any real battle with them in the film. There's a brief chase scene and that's it.

By in United States,

Here's something completely unrelated to Lego: the Hobbit movies were actually fine, just too long.

I'm tired of people acting like they're among humanity's worst crimes.

Agreed. They were too long, but there's some great scenes scattered in amongst all the fluff.

It was sold as is. I recall in 2013 going to toys-r-us (before they closed in the US) and bought this polybag along with a few others for $5 each.

That's okay, because the game skipped the entire third film.

Even if we're limiting ourselves to the cinematic arts, I'll agree that worse crimes have been committed, but I'm definitely with @Username28 that it shouldn't have been a trilogy. One, maybe two movies at best.

Gah! Is it really selling for that much? I opened one, but I still have two sealed. Time to open them both and increase their value!
