The bricks in the cart are the same colors as the knights. They’re hauling a cart of dead comrades…

By in United States,

There's a fascinating youtube video theorizing about what's in the cart.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think this set is fairly infamous for having what could be a *possible* depiction of a corpse. All the bricks in that cart are suspiciously the same colours as the knights themselves, even including a conspicuous grey blob which could be taken to be their helmet.

Glad to see the procession is still perfectly happy about all this though :P

$800 for this is insane.

Yikes. Looks like they’re on their way to a funeral, or grave.

…At least they somehow found a way to be cheerful?

(Also dear lord I don’t think I’ve seen a small set with THIS high a resale price)

You have to keep in mind, back then LEGO wasn't really seen as a collector's item like it is nowadays. We're lucky that any sealed copies of these sets exist at all

Not sure where the new figure comes from. There are currently only used ones for sale on Bricklink. Most of them are under $100NZD, then there is one listed for nearly $1,400NZD.
The other version 6077 has one sealed version for just shy of $4,000NZD

I was talking in USD, which is listed on this article.

My query about where the price comes from wasn't due to the difference in currencies. Normally they use bricklink listings, but currently there are no new items listed for this set, and there hasn't been any sales of new items in the last six months. So they are either using the last listed (Which is over six months old), or are pulling that information from a different place such as Ebay.

The listing of other prices was just interesting additional information, and I noted the currency so people knew they weren't in USD.

Yeah, but the set has got no exclusive figures or parts, and is very small.

Nice army builder set. With a few of these, the sahpe of the plalyground would look really different.

Fantastic set! These were my first non-city minifigs and therefore a welcome change!

Six minifigs, four shields (printed, I believe), two axes, and (here’s the kicker) four light-grey ABS swords. Those came in seven sets. Those sets were the Yellow Castle, the Yellow Castle, this set, this set, a service pack, and two different minifig packs. And the blades tended to break off the hilt. And if you want a complete Yellow Castle, you need these swords, so that drives the price up and takes this set’s value along for the ride.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Should we expect LEGO to remake this set and charge $800?

Gravatar

My love for this set is unhealthy.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A cautionary tale: when sniping this set on eBay, I accidentally missed out the decimal point in my maximum bid. Still fills me with dread to think how bad that could have been.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

You'd think whatever needs six knights to escort would be pretty important but truth is its just a picnic big enough for all of them

I didn’t understand what the narrator was saying since there was never an outright mention of “this is a corpse” so I thought the title was clickbait and I was just watching an overly complex video about the set’s relation to medieval history.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The lack of coconuts is worrying.....

Gravatar
By in United States,

So whose procession is this? Which Knight is this for? Should it not be Knights' Procession?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

There was a YouTube video a few years ago analysing this set from a Medieval History lens that concluded it was something of a funeral procession.

Maybe it’s that dark element/notoriety that raises the price.

do you know how hard is it to find a MISB box of this set? It's the price for a NEW still SEALED box of a 46 years old set!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Apparently army builders were already present from the start because this is barely a build compared to all those figs. No wonder castle collectors have such an insatiable hunger for castle figs that all castle sets are twice or moreso expensive on the aftermarket than they should be. And the Wolfpack cmf ceased to exist in any store immediately upon release. This set's 'it's normal to want dozens' design is to blame.

And yeah this reminded me of the video. I didn't think it was very convincing. This definitely just looks like a pile of the king's treasure to me. That he definitely always had and was definitely not looted when they definitely didn't pillage a village.

Because let's be honest, this is 1979 lego. They wouldn't do that...

Unless the child playing with them has a serious dark side, anyway.

@TotalMaddness is right though. LEGO wouldn’t have done that in 1979 when this set came out or for a few years after while it was still in production. The first undead/body figure of any kind was the floppy armed skeleton released in 1995, so many years later. There’s a significant time gap between them.

Actually the first hint at death was the glow-in-the-dark ghost that debuted in 1990.

Gravatar

Nice theory but I imagine the colors of the cart contents have more to do with the limited color palate of that era than anything else.

Still a nontrivial interval between when this set was current, ‘79 to early ‘80s, to the appearance of the first ghost in 1990. Most kid buyers/recipients of the set would likely have outgrown LEGO by the time the ghost came out.

By in United States,

Beautiful set. The Royal Knight fan in me was very pleased, when the Internet dawned in my life, and I explored old LEGO themes for the first time, that these guys have shields that are basically Royal Knight shields without the lion heads.

And they got picked up by my first Internet home, www.classic-castle.com, as their emblem.

Not going to drop $800 on a new copy, but that's because I am a working man with a corresponding wage.

Okay, so, the narrator and the comments are not in full agreement on what the “disturbing” aspect is. The top comment (and several others) suggest it looks like a chopped up knight minifig. The video allows that the disturbing aspect could be a representation of the Barefoot Procession, which immediately preceded the sacking of Jerusalem, after which the Crusaders put many of the civilian inhabitants to the sword. But there is one sentence in the narration, suggesting that this could be moments _after_ coming from a great slaughter, or before heading into a historical one. The former option hints at the possibility that at least one of their member died, and the video establishes pretty clearly that the narrator does not believe these are supplies or plunder.
