Random set of the day: Formula 1 Racing Car
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 2886 Formula 1 Racing Car, released during 1997. It's one of 47 Town sets produced that year. It contains 25 pieces, and its retail price was US$2.
It's owned by 1,136 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $12.80, or eBay.

I mean, if you say so. Looks more like a go-kart to me, but it does have some measure of resemblance to a Formula 1 racecar.
Ooh is this the latest Speed Champions review?
Pros: No stickers, no mistakes in instructions, no particular driver. Price can't be beat.
Cons: Same size tires, shaping could use improvement.
When was the last time a LEGO set had a retail price of $2?
Oh, I loved this little set. It was so cute, easily one of my favourites from these small pocket-money sets that came out in the lat 90s.

So did the last go-kart that I drove. It was still a go-kart.
So Lego is heavily into F1, and now Huwbot!?
Yes, random. (suspicious eyes)

The early series of collectable minifigs. It's laughable how the price has more than doubled since.

Wow. I wasn't collecting them back then; I didn't know that. :/
*insert angry comment about too much F1 in LEGO recently*

I'll take it. Infact I did, couple of them. Then, I used the parts to MOC Blacktron vehicles.
Boy, there's just no escaping Formula 1 these days!
This must have been Damon Hill’s Arrows car.
Weird, I remember it as blue and white.
The strange thing is this was part of a 8 set series in 1997 (sets 2880-2887).
Whilst most label them as just "Town", they somehow feel less Town than other non-Main Line sets that year (like 2849 or 6400).
For some reason these did not come in the standard bright blue bordered boxes all Town sets from 1992-1997 came in, neither did they use the new design for Town Junior (using bricks of various sizes on a light blue background), but an orange background not seen before.
Some sets (like this) came without minifig, with was rather odd (though seen before) for a Town set.
Some did come with rare or unusual pieces - The 2x2 parking tile (never seen outside 6394 before), the plain dark pink torso (only found in a single FreeStyle set) and the new gas station slope, made specifically for the Town Junior set 6548.
They were seemingly region exclusive and only available for a limited time. I have never seen any in 1997 actually, but a few did show up in regular retail stores throughout 1998, but never together.
I wonder if any advertisement can be found, showing all 8...
And suddenly, I miss the "Malibu Grand Prix" that used to be in the neighboring city to my own...although in fairness; I mostly just went for their arcade:)
Just as the announcement for ordering the F1 collectibles is made? I call hax!

Hahaha exactly. Good old prints
That's not just ANY race car.... It's a Blacktron 1 race car!
I always hated when a minifigure scale vehicle set didn't come with a minifigure. It's pretty rare though.
Back from the days when they made small racing cars that you can put a minifigure inside to have a driver. Whereas now, you decapitate the driver and just use the head.

Just swap out the cones for trans red and you're golden!
This was also the default car design for the racing section in Lego Island, wasn't it? I'm pretty sure that that design was around in a lot of different colours around that time.

By the time all the F1 cars are reviewed the 2025 season will be over - and people who are on the fence about buying them won't need the review to help decide. They should just review them in bunches maybe

No, that would be 1631. I made a similar comment when that was RSotD.

Quality of plastic has improved massively since then. Early CMFs both look and feel cheap. I may be imagining things, but the early CMF leg assemblies feel like they weigh less than EU versions, and I’ve snapped of one or two of the stems when trying to do leg swaps.
Not bad, for the price.
And in nice Blacktron I colors too!
I wonder why they didn't include a driver figure
