By in New Zealand,

I can't believe the second Pirates reboot is already 10 years old!

This set is personally one of my favourites of the theme.

Dude brought a sword to a cannon fight... :skull:

I certainly wouldn't defend that, especially against a cannon.

I'm gonna say it: Pirates 2015 was massively overhated

Agreed. People were nostalgic towards the original sets, which is fine but that doesn't mean the 2015 sets were bad.

On the one hand, 6245. On the other hand, this.

I wish I'd gotten this one. It's a very smal part of the build, but I like that campfire.

Hey now, be fair. He's also got a rifle. He's still considerably outgunned, but at least the bluecoat isn't the only one with a ranged weapon.

I'm afraid that I can accept your argument, as 6245 is a treasured set from my childhood.

Although the main ship 70413 and main fort 70412 we're a bit simple, they had excellent Minifigures and it was a fine wave (pun: yes).

The chess set 40158 is by far the best chess or game set I've seen from pirates. Excellent piece to price ratio and a great number of figures at a great price. The figures are a bit simple with no hats, backpacks, or epaulettes. I was able to get some epaulettes recently from pick a brick

What's the bluecoat gonna do, sink his ship?

By in United Kingdom,

Don’t know what’s in that bottle or barrel that our piratical pal will face down artillery for but it must be good stuff

Part of it is technically on the water, so that's certainly possible...ish.

I wish they would re-release the brown cannon bases. The old ones are fragile. Which, I believe, is Italian. ;)

For once a RSotD that I actually own!

I still remember the 1989 Pirates theme being introduced, and it felt so exiting at the time. The 2015 reboot was awesome as well, with some amazing minifigs, but I have to admit it's impossible to beat that initial excitement from when the theme was first launched. Some of the small 2015 sets certainly were better than those from the 1989-1996 line-up, but nostalgia-tinted glasses and childhood memories let any objectivity walk the board. The one thing I'd definitely call a downgrade from the original Pirates theme is the newly introduced bandana/durag. The original looked way cooler.

Patrick: I think ARG! he's trying ARG! to say ARG! (crash noises) land.
Captain Krabs: Arg! From, now one, only the Captain says Arg. Status report Mr. SquarePants?
SpongeBob: The whole ship is underwater Captain!
Krabs: Arg, we're marooned, then.

(This scene came to mind looking at the wrecked ship)

And 31109 Pirate Ship lasted 5 years of those since 2020, strangely still don't know why 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay only was sold for 1.5 years (it was IDEAS but even 21318 Tree House was sold for 5 years)

Meanwhile a game like LEGO Fortnite released much later then 21322 and has used builds and figures from that set and still does.

Lovely 10 dollar set! This has to be one of my favorite Pirates sets.

I don't know where else to say this but the biggest bionicle fan project has just been shut down by lego. After EIGHT YEARS of work out of love and passion with no financial gain. And the creators, Team Kanohi, have been nothing but open about their progress and reached out to lego many times before.

I know lego is a company only looking out for profit and with no reasoning or logic otherwise. But man.... attacking a fan work like that only after all that time. It's been a while since I've seen something THAT cruel.

So ehm... if you're salty lego is currently not doing pirate stuff... at least it's nothing like this. This feels like seeing someone make a breathtaking MOC layout that people have been dreaming of for years, only to have lego come over and demand that everything has to be destroyed because they might release a polybag-sized token depicting the subject matter in the future... probably. Probably not actually. Maybe a reference on a sticker at best.

And let me be clear that this is a shift from how they operated before. This is not just a simple 'making a game with an IP you don't own was a bad idea from the start'. There were guidelines, directly from lego. Offers to license the IP to lego. Correspondence. All the steps you can take. But Lego just changed its mind.

I'm not trying to trivialize or dismiss this creator's feelings seeing his hard work going down the drain in any way, nor your personal involvement in this (if any), but saying "it's been a while since I've seen something THAT cruel" feels a bit out of touch considering everything else going on in the world right now. Unless you haven't been keeping up with current events in the past five years or so, I'd argue you've likely seen far crueler things on at least a weekly basis. That said, I fully understand it's a hard pill to swallow for anyone involved of this project, as well as fans that are emotionally invested in the franchise.

While it certainly sounds like a very corporate and greedy move to shut down a fan project like that, I can imagine something like this makes legal departments jumpy. For IP owners it's important that they have a paper trail that can prove they fully own all elements of their IPs, to avoid any problems down the road or having to pay royalties to others. Unless there are contracts signed, guidelines and correspondence don't necessarily mean that much -- if anything. IP holders can cancel projects with a blink of an eye if don't like where things are going, for whatever lame reason they come up with. I've seen it happen before with other major toy companies. Very unfortunate, but I guess that's the IP business.

By in Austria,

I'm too young to have experienced the 90s Pirates theme but I bought almost all Sets from this reboot. They were easily attainable on a solid discount and both aesthetically pleasing and excellent for play

I meant to say outside of the usual terrible stuff happening. This is not the worst thing that happened even this very day. But the sheer pettiness of it is just... hard to put to words. Sorry if this seemed to downplay the other things that are affecting people far more than something like this ever could. I'm not that good with words.

I'm convinced you weren't trying to downplay all the pain and anguish in the world, and I can relate to the sentiment you're trying to convey in your message, but I can also imagine people reading your statement and thinking: "Seriously!?!" Good you clarified.

But yeah, the pettiness is stunning, even if it doesn't really come as a surprise to me. Companies are just very protective of their brands, and it's not the first time something as innocent as fan-made works derived from IPs are being targeted. If anyone outside of a company (or without a work-for-hire contract) creates supplementary material based on an IP, companies can't always legally incorporate similar concepts, so they rather demand the fan-made work being deleted.

Ah these 2015 Pirate sets reminded me of the ones launched in 2009! I own this particular set from this wave and quite like it. Lovely little set with good pieces, figures and playability!

Likely what happened is that someone high up learned about it for the first time, or someone in a key position moved on and whoever took over their position had different feelings on this. The fact that they've been doing this for eight years may have been their downfall. If they'd managed to crank it out in one, it would have been over before anyone had time to change their minds, but when a project stretches on like that, you can't count on the situation remaining the same from start to finish.
