I have the black sticker version of this set which released in 2005. It's quite odd that they released it with a new sticker colour being the only change instead of making an entirly new design.

Hmmm...I mean: on the one hand; there no engine blocking the driver's/officer's view...but those lights on top...yikes...:)

By in United States,

I had this one. Was one of the first City sets I got, and one of the first with the megaphone piece and robot arm. Loved how textured and funky the connection points on those were.

He caught today's RMotD red-handed. Red-everythinged, in fact.

Especially since the windows didn't match the 2008 Police sets. This also bothered me when they kept some of the 2005 Fire sets alongside the 2007 range.

They did the same with a motorcycle in 7235/7235-2, and a van in 7245/7245-2. The different colored stickers makes sense, given the array of different liveries used by European police forces (I actually just passed a white/green Polizei car with two giant loudspeakers on the roof and some variant of the German flag with a centered crest, while driving to our club's meeting on Saturday). Why they split the stickers up between two different releases is a mystery, especially since most of the other Police sets released during the -2 period look like they were new sets. Maybe retailers were still interested in ordering those sets, but the official livery of the theme was in the middle of a transition, and they had to adjust those three sets to keep things consistent.

God this era of city goes so hard man. I love it so much.

By in Netherlands,

I kind of like how the first few years had the same car, motorcycle and van twice. It made the early years of City feel more coherent, and it just so happened that the new police station was a major upgrade in terms of design, as the old one was still partially rooted in earlier design sensibilities like the chunky bricks and bay windows. The smaller vehicles had been the most modern innovation of 2005, so it makes sense why they didn't immediately tried to reinvent the wheel. This wave also had the excellent mobile command truck and police helicopter, so there was plenty of new stuff too. Now the whole wave was on par with each other!

By in Australia,

Have this one, and also the black stickered version. One of them was among my first ever sets I think.

Nothing special, but it’s nice when LEGO does other things to do with policing instead of just cops and robbers.

I own the black stickered motorcycle too. I definitely think the blue stickers make more sense as the black doesn't really work on a childrens toy because they would be more attracted to blue and blue is a colour commonly associated with the police. That would more likely be the reason for the change.

By in United Kingdom,

That seems like a very overly elaborate speed gun given they're normally just hand-held

Gravatar
By in Poland,

I have the black sticker version of this Police Car. It was my favorite vehicle set from this period because it was the only sedan I had, until I got 7993 and had my first civilian car. I planted the speed gun on a road plate in my town and made police chases around it.

By in Australia,

Funny how this is like one of the most classic city sets

I have it, but made it into a 1950s Jaguar police car.

I agree the black versus blue sticker change was odd.

I also had the classic 2008 City police helicopter which for whatever reason someone put the POLIZEI sticker on the bottom instead of POLICE.

City was peak 2008-2013 in my opinion. Though I do like to acknowledge the 2015 Deep Sea and Demolition themes which were quite good. After that City went down hill (with some individual nice sets here and there)

Ah, yes, the mythical Police Car. IIRC, my youngest brother got this when he was probably 3-4 years old... it may have been built, once, but it was quickly demolished and its parts used in other creations. It has not been seen since. I recall attempting to restore the set roughly 15 years ago, but too many pieces had been lost or used in MOCs that were not coming apart, so eventually I gave up. It's one of those sets that fades into legend when you grow up; between us, my brothers and I know we collectively have 1 of these, but I doubt any of us remember ever seeing it built.

...I happen to know that the dark grey base is being used for a silly little flower "truck" (it's not much of a truck, more a flatbed car...) I built years ago to store my flower pieces. No, I will not be giving that piece up anytime soon.

Were there any other variants than the blue/black "POLICE" and green "POLIZEI" ones? BL doesnt seem to list others. One would at least expect a Spanish and Italian one I guess (given there's one fully localized version).

Would have a bit of a 12V Trains era feeling that way.

2008 design police car can be seen in great 7744.

By in Australia,

I picked up 10 in the black sticker version along with 4 7235 mainly for the upgraded uniforms to go with my existing cars. I wasn't such a fan of the design, but the parts came in handing for MOCs.

By in United States,

Now, which of the 195 police cars is this? Even just in 2008 City alone, there were 2 others.

Between Police, Fire, Coast Guard, and transportation officials such as air traffic controllers (whether or not you take jungle, undersea, arctic, and other researchers to be publicly funded), Lego City's public sector is probably the largest single source of employment by a long shot. Take of that what you will.

Kids are nothing if not inconsistent. Some prefer blue, while others might want colors that are never used in police livery, like pink. And across Europe, you will find a variety of different liveries (heck, even the US has a wide range). For instance, none of these three options work for the UK, where they have a white base with a checkerboard pattern of blue and neon yellow on the sides.

As far as I know just the black police/green polizei 2005 version and the blue police/blue polizei 2008 version.

Why German? I guess that it's because Germany used to be the biggest market for Lego for quite a while. I believe that for Lego it was an even bigger market than the US at some point.

Why multiple stickers at all though? Who knows. Market research probably mandated it, as ca 2004-2008 was a time when lego was recovering from its near financial collapse in 2003. I suppose they thought it would sufficiently affect the bottom line.

According to a fact book I picked up at NYTF 2002-2004, as late as 1998, Germany bought more total product than any other nation. And 1999 is the year they launched Star Wars, which pushed the US above Hermany as the largest single consumer-nation. However, Germany probably still bought more on a per-capita basis, at least for a few more years. I’ve never seen numbers on that, but if the 2001 launch of Harry Potter and (more importantly) Bionicle didn’t tip the scales, German disinterest in the more Hollywoodized catalog probably did. At present, I don’t know which nation holds the top spot in either category, but it seems a sure bet that Germany is no longer in the running.

By in United Kingdom,

Had the older 2005 version of this set, though not by any particular choice of my own since town / city was pretty near the bottom of my Lego interests by that point and I wouldn't have chosen this over many of the other 2005 themes.

That said. Apparently my mum had been in the local semi-independent small toy shop one day while I was at school, and had found that on the copy of this set they had in stock, its box had been severely battered and/or torn. She reported it to the shop manager, I guess thinking they might want to be made aware of the issue; and they said they couldn't sell it in that condition and so let her have the set for next-to-nothing.

Naturally, she then gave the set to me, since I was still a Lego fan even half-way through secondary school, and I wasn't going to say no to free Lego! The contents were all present and accounted for, so it seems like the box had just got really crushed while it was on the shelf, or while being handled by a previous customer, rather than being the result of someone stealing from it.

It was a neat enough car, but again didn't really fit in with the themes I was actively pursuing at the time so it didn't see a whole lot of use besides being rolled out along with the rest of my collection whenever I got all my sets out at once. I eventually sold it on, in one of my major Lego downsizing phases.

More than a decade later, this blue-sticker version of the set also passed through my hands when I bought a cheap lot off eBay a couple of years ago (mostly for a semi-complete 5988, one of my childhood dream sets, when I spotted a couple of its unique parts in the photos). This was one of the other complete or near-complete sets in the lot - albeit with very inaccurately-aligned stickers -, which I assembled and then sold on as a way to make back the lot's initial cost.

I'm glad somebody finally pointed that out! The endless stream of Lego police vehicles is rather exhausting, but this particular set—well okay, its identical predecessor—is one of the standouts because of its place in Lego's corporate turnaround and its continuity with the first minifigure.

I've got that set too and I think the black sticker version fits fine among them.

By in United States,

I don't know what version of this set I have--it's been the "no stickered" version for so long (I had tweaked it to match with my mid-1990s Town police, and never applied them) that I no longer remember.

Hopefully, the instructions would distinguish it, otherwise I don't know if I'd be able to tell at this late date. Who knows if I still have the stickers?

Oh, weird. Just now when I clicked on that link, I noticed that there’s a “Theme Group” grouping (that set falls under “Modern”, unsurprisingly). @Huw, when did that happen?

Lego made a police car with only 59 pieces? That must have been a twenty-aughts set.
