It wouldn't be a release day if Lego.com actually worked. (sigh)
Aaaaaand the site is crashing. Can't say I expected anything less.
500 Internal Server Error
So, why they force the limited number? Any reason to do this?
How have they not figured this out yet?
I would recommend people use the direct links to LEGO.com if you are having trouble, as that method is working for me at the moment.
Was able to get the castle - seems that whenever I can't checkout, switching to PayPal usually works.
And all set, a couple of minutes of waiting a few F5 reloads but overall pretty smooth!
I didn't have any problems ordering the ones I wanted... only some hiccups on the LEGO website, but in 5 minutes everything was done!
Placed my order. Happy with: The Thieves of Tortuga and Antique Shop
Lego will literally do anything except upgrade their IT infrastructure.
Finally got a Transylvania order through.
I finally got through! Ordered Mushroom Village, Antique Shop, and Popcorn Wagon. I'm still thinking about Adventure in Transylvania, I'm going to wait and see how fast that sells.
No problems here. Just placed my order for Tortuga and Transylvania.

Seems more server instances just loaded in 3-5 minutes.
I still do not get why they feed e-bay sharks with the limited amount and "sold out in 1 hour" thing.
Castle: 29% sold in 13 minutes.
Placed my order for Tortuga also
Went pretty smooth here. Got one Internal Server Error, but refreshed once and then the purchase was done in one min. Adventures, Antique Shop and Popcorn Wagon in the bag.
No problems, though it seemed to take forever on Tortuga, but Transylvania, Popcorn wagon, and Tortuga secured and pay in three PayPal.
Funny enough, the links from Bricklink didn't work for me. I then loaded up Brickset and was able to get in from here! Got the Antique House!
Order in. Fairly smooth from my point of view. Minor issue with all but 910053 not wanting to add to the cart the first time I clicked on them. Reload the page and it worked just fine. Nothing like the issues I've seen in some other BLD series.
Took a while to get through, but got myself a Tortuga!
I can't even log in to Lego.com.
All except the Antique Shop are already funded. And that set is very close, so if we give it a minute it will also be funded.
Transylvania & Tortuga ordered without any issues for me. Already received confirmation emails.
13 mins in and all models are funded. Economic crisis, anyone?
Absolutely sailed through ordering 5 minutes before it went live, using the direct links. Everything's showing as having reached the Funded level now.
It seemed to break for me at every step but refreshing brought it back. Got my order confirmed for Tortuga, Transylvania and Popcorn (a lost disco act, surely!)

That was the second method I tried that failed. Original method of being logged in hours early to both sites and mashing buttons eventually worked after a half-dozen tries with glitches and failures at each and every stage.
Castle, Pirates, and Mushrooms ordered. Waiting for adrenaline to drop before I decide on popcorn and antiques.

Don't wait too long, all are funded now, Transylvania and Tortuga taking the lead. I'm thinking about Transylvania too but I'll probably pass, already ordered Antique and Mushroom Village.
19 minutes passed:
Castle: 35%
Tortuga: 31.5%
(html tag name: "bdp-progress__progress", if you want to see percentage by numbers)
What an adrenaline rush to get a set for myself.

A lot of the orders are resellers. These people are all over facebook in my city. I've seen Bricklink sellers with three of the same set so they cheat the system too.
Antique Shop and Popcorn Wagon secured; I’ll be back for wave 6: Offroad Adventure and Sequoia Tree Trail!
Tortuga and Transylvania sets ordered without issues. Still thinking about Popcorn Vendor.
Got in and managed to get Tortuga, I ordered that on it's own first as I knew that it and Transylvania would be the popular ones.
I then returned and ordered Antique shop and Popcorn Wagon together in one order. It's funny that the Popcorn Wagon is 1p below free delivery too XD!
Happy with the 3 sets I got, hope everyone else manages to get what they want but you need to be quick on Transylvania and Tortuga it seems.
Placed my order! I got The thieves of Tortuga and the popcorn wagon, happy with that. Last one was a impulse buy tho, haha. No issues with any of the sites btw, well done.

So irritating. This is why we have to set reminders to order when it opens. I've only gotten BLDP sets I actually want to build and keep.
Mushroom Village secured with minimal frustration (secure checkout error on first attempt). Overall, best experience yet with BDP transaction.
I think I got my order placed. Got a fraud alert and am hoping that they aren't making me re-processs
944 dollars later…
On the plus side, shipping 6 months later gives me time to save up (if I remember).
Tortuga and Transylvania sets ordered without issues. YEAH
LEGO and Bricklink are proud to present their newest innovation: SECRET MAX.
Watch the line grow, feed your FOMO, where will it stop?
You must have a popcorn wagon in your city. You can't have 1 Mushroom house but skip the next one. Look, this cute little house has a front and a back. Don't miss out on the next SleeplessNight masterpiece. How can you call yourself a Pirates lover and then pass on Tortuga.

Pass on popcorn, have the OG mushroom house but not this one. Don't need the antiques (a good chunk of my Lego collection probably is at this point), but did get Transylvania for the architecture of it. I'm a pirates fan and passing on Tortuga (and Ominous).
This is where my FOMO stops.
I have started to wait until 15-20 minutes go by, and then the site is usually working great, and less frustration. Plus they don't sell out in 1 minute, so need to mash clicks at the opening seconds. So I got Tortuga, Transylvania, and popcorn cart and it was fast and smooth. Still debating the mushroom house...
At 350 USD/EUR I would have bought my first BDP set, I really like that Transylvania castle. But again the prices here are not equal. It's €424 / $484, and that puts it above the reasonable limit for me.

Ouch, that's rough. Hard to justify for sure. I would have passed at those prices. Sorry :(
First time BDP buyer. I got the Transylvania castle and it pains me to think about how much money I burned on it.

I just realised the situation for CH is even worse, since VAT here is 8% compared to the 20ish in Germany.

NGL, if the Swiss would take me, I'd gladly take higher prices on Lego in exchange for living in a civilized place.
Do employee discounts apply towards BrickLink preorders?
Ordering was very easy. I almost miss the adrenaline rush of earlier series.

Just saw the Mushroom designer video. The UCS Mushroomator is coming next!
Spoiler Alert: the exclusive GWP is still patches. :(
Worked fine for me, iOS mobile, NZ middle of night, PayPal.
Just had the usual out of stock email - and a still items left in your basket email, when there isn't - still find the former disconcerting, even after all these series.
Although the castles in previous series have looked quite nice, none of them persuaded me to buy. Finally this series has tempted me to take the plunge and buy the Transylvania set. That is one of the best looking sets LEGO have ever released, and it isn't too unreasonably priced. My concern now is knowing the lack of printed instructions will frustrate me when I come to build it, perhaps so much that I don't enjoy building it.

It's different but not a bad different. You really just need a tablet / computer nearby. Phones are probably a bit too small.
There is like zero chance my son gets to build 910049 Adventures in Transylvania. I'm still not over letting him build 910029 Mountain Fortress. Every time I look at it, I ooh and aah.
Mushroom Village has been procured for my eldest daughter.
I don't need Tortuga. I don't need Tortuga. I don't need Tortuga.

I have some friends who ordered Tortuga, so I'll at least get a chance to look at it even if I don't get one. Get you a Lego friend with different tastes, it's great!
Based on the percentages of the "Funded" progress line, it appears that Adventures in Transylvania has a proposed production run of 40,000 and Popcorn Wagon 34,000. The other sets remain at 30,000.

BTW, I hope you started a big fight with Mrs. YC, last night. The only way we survive this is to start a massive counterinsurgency now, before they find out. It's like burning the fuel before the forest fire.
I learned this and more from Andor. Plus, we need the stupid children to do stupid stuff on command. I think I got that covered.
Also, we need some cool outfits and vehicles... and art (maybe a fancy wall tiger).

Paypal Mafia = Musk + Thiel. They are still profiting off it.
Paypal Mafia??
Didn't we use that to make stuff in school? Yeah..I remember we covered a balloon in it and waited for it to dry....

That's a good thing I can try next time. I had to go back, scroll down, and try clicking 'checkout' again and again for 5min or so until it finally took me to the checkout page...
I managed to place my order within 5 minutes of release, but still no confirmation email for me. Getting very worried now... My order is showing as "Just Placed" on the website even though it was hours ago. I'm going to be devastated if I miss out due to some stupid technical error. Why can't things just go smoothly for once?!
Looks like Transylvania is down to the last 5k.

Do they allow you to build on a proper computer with these? I opened a copy of 43221 with plans to build all the Pixar panels, only to find that it included instructions for just the main set of panels, and the _only_ way to access the rest of the instructions was by a mobile-only app.

would it be because they do not have 30k at warehouse. I bet take longer than normal. Doubt it like a factory bee can just pick up and send to waiting in warehouse.

They don't have any at the warehouse. That's why it takes half a year for them to ship.
Ended up ordering the Antique Shop as the only one that really appealed to me. Probably because it feels like an updated version of Legoland buildings that I got in the 60s!

If you right click anywhere on the page on BrickLink and select 'inspect', that will bring up a panel on the right side. You can then search 'bdp-progress_progress' using CTRL+f to view the five progress bar percentages.
The current percentages are:
The Thieves of Tortuga - 84%
Mushroom Village - 40%
Antique Shop - 32%
Adventure in Transylvania - 92%
Popcorn Wagon - 56%

There should also be the info about the maximum number of sets available. Adventure in Transylvania should be 40,000, Popcorn Wagon should be 34,000 and the rest should be the usual 30,000 units.
I’m on mobile now and can’t see but if I recall correctly, these were the numbers. Can someone confirm?
That's fascinating if they bumped only Transylvania and Popcorn.
Antique shop ordered. Best wave yet I will say. Also, @yellowcastle you definitely should get Thieves of Tortuga…
For anyone wondering, Tortuga didn’t get increased, but Transylvania did, to 40,000. Popcorn wagon also did, 34k
I've made this little bit of code so you can easily see how many units of each remain; open the developer console (F12) and paste it in, then press enter:
const submissions = blapp.models.models.submissions_finalists.data.submissions;
const maxNameLength = Math.max(...submissions.map(s => s.strSubmissionName.length));
blapp.models.models.crowdData.forEach((item, index) => {
const maxAvailable = item.stock.nMaxAvailable;
const percentagePreordered = item.stock.dPercentagePreordered;
const remainingUnits = Math.round(maxAvailable * (1 - percentagePreordered));
const submissionName = submissions[index].strSubmissionName.padEnd(maxNameLength);
console.log(`${submissionName}: Max Available = ${maxAvailable}, Preordered = ${(percentagePreordered * 100).toFixed(2)}%, Remaining = ${remainingUnits}`);
});
Current output is:
The Thieves of Tortuga : Max Available = 30000, Preordered = 85.37%, Remaining = 4389
Mushroom Village : Max Available = 30000, Preordered = 40.55%, Remaining = 17836
Antique Shop : Max Available = 30000, Preordered = 32.79%, Remaining = 20163
Adventure in Transylvania: Max Available = 40000, Preordered = 93.57%, Remaining = 2572
Popcorn Wagon : Max Available = 34000, Preordered = 56.97%, Remaining = 14631
Looks like they’ve just increased the maximum numbers again, right now. Can someone post the new updated numbers please?
They are changing the coding for the progress bars. They are altering the percentages for the 'Funded' milestone.
Current percentages are:
The Thieves of Tortuga 7.5%
Mushroom Village 10%
Antique Shop 10%
Adventure in Transylvania 6%
Popcorn Wagon 10%
As you lower the percentages it will increase the max available for a constant Funded level of 3000.
I think thieves of tortuga has just bumped up too
Yea, castle is 50k now. Tortuga is 40k, wagon is back to 30k.
Greetings, my excellent friends.
Strange things are afoot at the Special K.
Turns out - this is not the first series to dish out more than 30k of each model.
For those that didn't receive the second confirmation email, I contacted Lego customer support and they said that there is an IT issue affecting all Bricklink orders today that is causing them not to show up. Give it a day or two and things will reflect accurately on our end. The orders will be fine (he asked if I had an order number).

Just curious, anyone have an idea what production runs for large regular sets are, like SW UCS or big Icons/Ideas?

So build it with him. I did that with my kids, one person takes the directions and builds while the other pulls parts for the next step then you switch off and take turns. It's fun for both and cuts the build time in half. Plus you'll have the memory of building it together.

This is interesting. It's great that they can scale supply to meet demand, but I have to believe this is also an effort to dissuade resellers from trying to capitalize on scarcity. It's going to take a lot longer for any of these sets to see any significant appreciation in the aftermarket.

You'd need to move the decimal several positions to the right. Consider that these sets are all likely to sell out their allotment within a few days, but a UCS set probably sells even more copies on the first day alone. And then it will generally be available for purchase for at least a few years afterwards. Small sets may not have the lifespan of a UCS set, but they are more affordable, and are thus more likely to be bought in larger numbers. If retail sets were only produced in mid five figure quantities, you'd likely never see most of them on any store shelves, and the company would be logging profits comparable to what they made several decades ago.

Yessiry Ted!
They need those progres bars to raise the FOMO. If the numbers turn out to be are unlimited and only time limited, I wonder how many sets ordered early on for resale will get cancelled. Or will LEGO close some to show there is a maximum to avoid this happening.

Plus the fact the only real difference between the BDP set and a BL'd copy would be the box. This is the one time where someone looking to save money can have almost the exact thing a person who bought it from BDP would have with the exception of the stickers but I've noticed some BL sellers breaking sets and selling the stickers so there's that too.
I REALLY like this change to the programme. I would have liked it a little more if I had known that I didn't need to get up at 3.15am this morning to buy sets because they would continue to be available for (probably at least) a few days!
Resellers will hate this - at least the small ones will (as I don't think the large ones bother with BDP). The notion of "Lego investing" is based on people trying to predict future demand for sets against supply and the BDP has (until now) provided a very clear signal of what the supply of each set will be, making it easier to speculate on which ones will be in demand later and buy accordingly. The limited window to purchase (sometimes only hours) also increases scarcity which from the perspective of a reseller is a great opportunity.
By setting a base supply (up to 30k) while also allowing for supply to increase within the first few days where there is clearly greater demand, Bricklink reduces the incentives for people to buy with the intent of resale, while at the same time making it easier for people who really want these sets for themselves to buy them within a time period that lasts more than a few hours.
This won't prevent people from buying for purely for resale, but it does reduce the incentive, while making it easier for people to buy these sets.
The other group who might not like this change is the "exclusivity" crowd - the die-hard collectors who only consider something to be valuable if not many other people have it. All I can say to them is that these sets will still be relatively exclusive compared to most Lego sets, but if you don't like that these sets are more accessible, maybe go buy some misprints or something else rare that you can also find on Bricklink. :-)

Another difference is getting the parts together. Collecting together a few thousand parts is not a trivial task, even with wants lists, and if you go down this route it is not necessarily cheaper.
It is interesting that several of the sets are struggling this time around. I personally think the Mushroom Village is over priced, the Antique Shop is nice, but again, a little too much for what you get. Which I think has led people to the Popcorn set, but that is not a £50 set for me. The other two, whilst nice, don't thrill me enough to want to spend that money.
I will hold out for sushi restaurant in Series 7, and see what June 14th brings for Series 8.
Series 6 is pretty strong too, just personal preference!

It seems fair to piece count but it doesn't look like there are that many pieces. I actually agree that it could be a bit cheaper.
I think people might be feeling tapped out on the expense of these sets. Nearly a full day later, none of them are sold out.
I placed 3 separate orders yesterday, the earliest about 5 minutes after the sets went live and the other 2 orders later in the day. I have now received an email for all 3 orders saying that they are "out of stock". Is this some kind of glitch or what is going on here? I could see maybe the second orders being affected by stock somehow, but the order from 5 minutes after the sets went live doesn't make sense. Has anyone else had this experience?

Just the standard notification, because they are 'currently out of stock' until the sets have been made (in a few months)

Yes, 'not yet in stock' might have been a bit more helpful than 'out of stock'!

Transylvania sold about 41k copies so far, so still pretty successful I would say. Tortuga is almost at 30k, but the others are definitely "below expectations".

27,418 / 40,000 / The Thieves of Tortuga

As a frequent buyer of BLDP sets:
1. Sometimes expense/value.
2. Sometimes just themes I don't want. I have most of the castles/modular types so far, but others don't always interest me. Or else the theme has had a comeback of sorts, like Forestmen.
3. Official Lego sets have been high quality for the themes I like, so I have to balance that budget too.
4. Life has gotten more expensive and less certain. Harder to justify any purchases like this.
The only surprise for me so far (other than the mystery Max) is the slow progress so far on Mushroom. I had thought it possible that all 5 could reach 30,000 but it seems that’s no longer likely. It would be interesting to see how much movement the numbers make after the initial 24 hour rush. I wonder if the increased availability will put off the “exclusivity” folks.
Really pleased to see these haven’t sold out and the numbers are there for people to get a chance to buy.
Any chance to stick it to resellers/‘investors’, I’m happy with.

No, not an easy task but when some sets like castle prices get into the stratosphere it could be a viable option. The Mountain Fortress is higher up there in price, around $550 right now with some getting up to $750 on Ebay. So when it does get to over $1000 I'd say a good option. I've never BL'd a set but if I really wanted it I'd give it a shot.
Bonne journée a tous.

I like some of these, but I think it's more of a money thing. I just have too many other financial obligations to worry about these sets. Even though I know I won't be charged for a few more months. The last series is about to charge, so that's another expense I need to consider.
The ABCs of buying LEGO. Always Be Crying (because I spent too much)
@KingLego:
You're never going to stop resellers, because there will always be those who are willing to play the long game. At some point, someone is going to join the hobby, or return to it after an absence, and some of those people will want to go back and collect stuff they missed.
@WokePope said:
"I think people might be feeling tapped out on the expense of these sets. Nearly a full day later, none of them are sold out."
Part of that is the simple fact that they can still choose between all five. If your first choice is sold out, you might move to your second choice. As more sets sell out, it drives people to scramble for the last few copies of the least desired set. If you paid attention during previous funding periods, there were always people towards the end who made impulsive purchases solely because they felt they needed to buy _something_. But when nothing is sold out, there's less pressure to buy _something_, and it's more down to deciding if the first choice is really worth the expense.
If they'd kept the 30k cap, looking at the most recent numbers that were posted, Transylvania would have sold out very early, and over 10k might have shifted purchases to Tortuga, which would have also sold out. If the remaining buyers had all shifted to the Popcorn Wagon, it would have sold out a few hours ago with over 2000 buyers now trying to pick between the last two sets. Meanwhile, anyone who was waffling over those two would have been watching the other three sell out, and might be more likely to rush to get a purchase in before the choice was taken away from them.
I like that they expand the quantities to allow everyone who wants a set to get one. Although it is weird that they put any caps in the first place.

I think this is spot on. Thanks, @PurpleDave.
@yellowcastle:
We saw the opposite happen with Forma, where they set regional quantities, and at some point ended up reducing them to be quite a bit lower than they were at the start. Anyone who was waiting until the last minute got shut out completely. Anyone who was watching the numbers might have perceived that they were selling faster than they really were and rushed to make a purchase. At the end, people were scrambling to get _something_ while there was still product available.
I’d made an early purchase of one complete set, plus an extra shark skin, but later decided I might like a few extra skins. By the time I got back, all that was left were fish scales sinking into the depths. But I think the final US numbers were closer to the original UK numbers, which themselves were similarly reduced. And then they announced that everything had sold out. They could have potentially sold more product if they’d left the numbers alone, but they might not have seen a final push at the end. And the project wouldn’t have appeared as successful, even if they did sell more of everything, if the status bars weren’t all full to the end.

I don't care so much about the "mint carded" but the secondary market has been wonderful for my family....whether it be LEGO sets we missed, or replacement Gamecube controllers that don't break when you look at them, or even some G.I. Joe sets for my son as I try to relive my childhood through him. :o)
I always get torn when I love the first half of a comment but not so much the second, or vice versa. Do I like it or not. lol.

That's an astute point. For myself, I liked all the sets. I think that Antique Shop and Popcorn Wagon would look really nice in my Christmas layout.
However, my excessive purchase of the other sets has delayed/prevented my secondary purchase. This has happened almost every time. When those markers move to red, I bite the bullet and press buy.
Without that pressure, I'm banking my money for the growing economic and political uncertainty created by the big baby elections.
@yellowcastle:
I'm merely saying that even before the minifig existed, people were buying toys with the intention of keeping them in factory condition. Some people even bought the Early Bird package, and rather than trading them in for action figures, they kept them sealed. Regardless of how you feel, the collector market has been around longer than many of the people who complain about it. Doesn't mean you have to like it or hate it, but it's certainly not going away after all these decades.

Most of my collection is MISB, so I hear you. And I can’t lie to myself and think exclusivity doesn’t play a role with some of my collecting…cough…cough…Blue Fiat…cough. :o)
I am very grateful TLG decided to change the limits on the fly. I really wanted Transylvania, but on the 10th I was just back from a trip during which I apparently caught Covid--so I didn't realize Series 5 sets were on sale until an hour ago! Nevertheless, I was able to get not only the big popular set I had hoped to get, but also the Popcorn Wagon, just for fun. With the earlier series, if I missed the starting time by two days, there pretty much wasn't anything I wanted left (or so I recall).
It seems like a really positive move - making more of the popular sets has been frequently requested, and this also removes some of the FOMO pressure to order within hours - at least now people have days to weeks to consider their purchases.

The $1.5M is his percentage take (5%) based upon the sales of his three designs. There may be some reduction for VAT.

$1.5M, divided by 10k, divided by three rounds, comes out to $50 per copy sold, which would require they retail at $1000. Were they capped at 30k copies instead? Also, I didn't realize they were making 5% of gross (thought it was more like 1-2%). But yeah, based on those numbers, Transylvania is going to pay out over $800,000 to the creator. No wonder they're cracking down on serial participants. You could make a really nice living just landing one BLDP slot per year, if it sells out.

Yeah, no kidding. They make quite a bit more than the Ideas designers on a percentage basis.
It's not quite gross. Included Euro taxes and perhaps shipping costs are subtracted. The low estimate of $1.5M is based on that subtraction. The total is based upon the 30k cap which was met for the prior two sets, and is closer to $2M without the subtraction.

The max quantity for Thieves of Tortuga has been adjusted down to 37,000. Still over 4,000 available, though.
Three and a half hours left:
Amount Sold / Maximum Available / Set Name
48,936 / 50,000 / Adventure in Transylvania
32,935 / 37,000 / The Thieves of Tortuga
27,977 / 30,000 / Popcorn Wagon
15,859 / 30,000 / Mushroom Village
13,791 / 30,000 / Antique Shop
What kind of moron orders Tortuga with 30 seconds to go, after 2x points ends....
Asking for a friend.
