Review: 60466 Bulldozer
Posted by CapnRex101,
Construction has been a regular subtheme of LEGO City since the range was introduced in 2005, but its sets advanced significantly in size, detail and realism last year, with the launch of 60409 Mobile Construction Crane and 60420 Construction Excavator.
60466 Bulldozer continues the series of construction machinery and shares lots of the prior sets' attributes, offering great detail and functions. However, those similarities extend to the price, as £54.99, $64.99 or €59.99 feels relatively expensive for this kind of vehicle.
Summary
60466 Bulldozer, 682 pieces.
£54.99 / $64.99 / €59.99 | 8.1p/9.5c/8.8c per piece.

60466 Bulldozer looks fantastic and has realistic functions, with one or two surprises
- Great-looking bulldozer
- Realistic and very detailed
- Excellent and unusual functions
- Works well with prior sets
- No ladder to reach the cab
- Arguably over-engineered
Minifigures
Three minifigures are provided, dressed for various roles on a building site. None are identified on the packaging, but the first is actually Ted Brickle, a character from the LEGO City No Limits series and presumably the foreman, based on his attire. I love the dark orange utility belt, which works perfectly with the printed braces.
The other workers are generic, but look good, nonetheless. Reddish orange is an ideal colour choice for their high-visibility jackets, with tan and metallic silver reflective strips. These torsos and decorated legs debuted in last year's construction range, so I appreciate such consistency across multiple sets.
Ted's alternative surprised expression is fun, but the accessories could be better, limited to a radio and a wrench. I had hoped for another blueprint 2x4 tile like those in past sets, perhaps featuring 60473 The City Tower this time.
The Completed Model
Nice though the minifigures are, they are completely overshadowed by the massive bulldozer! The vehicle measures 26cm long, which is an authentic size beside the minifigures. Moreover, flame yellowish orange is an appealing colour choice and I love the dozer's chunky proportions. The designer probably drew from various sources, but it reminds me of the Caterpillar D9.
60074 Bulldozer was released a decade ago, costing about half as much as the new model in most regions. I like the 2015 design for its size and price, but the new bulldozer is much larger, incorporates more functions and fundamentally looks more powerful, which is definitely a factor that will appeal to children and probably adults too!
The blade is brilliantly constructed using curved slopes and tiles, forming a realistic shape and smooth finish. The 2x6 concave slope created for this year's Speed Champions F1 cars is only available here in dark bluish grey and its curvature blends perfectly with the 1x1 and 1x2 slopes attached along the top and bottom of the blade.
A few pieces of rubble are supplied to push around, including some ever-useful 1x4 masonry bricks. The construction work sign is a welcome addition too, especially because this piece is printed. It was introduced in 60450 Wheel Loader earlier this year.
The blade is articulated, but it can only be raised a short distance. Again, although this is fairly realistic, I think the blade should move a little further on a toy. In addition, you cannot adjust its angle, despite the rams situated above the push beams making it look like you might be able to, so that is a shame.
I like the red and white accents on top of the blade and the lift cylinders look excellent as well, topped with trans-clear lights. Moreover, the bodywork on the front of the tractor vehicle looks good and includes the elephant emblem seen on several of these new construction machines, printed on a 2x4 curved slope. There are no stickers in this set.
Maybe my favourite feature of the entire vehicle, though one of the most subtle, is the working engine inside! A simple camshaft mechanism is connected to the tracks, pushing three pistons up and down as the bulldozer rolls along. Technic cam pieces are just about visible through the lattice windows on each side, or you can view the pistons by detaching the top panel.
The tracks are very reminiscent of those on the Caterpillar D9, featuring little rollers above the push beams. Otherwise, the tracks are quite similar to those on 60420 Construction Excavator, using rubber tyres against the tracks to ensure they run properly with enough friction, even over smooth surfaces.
Flame yellow orange slopes are used to great effect for the bodywork, narrowing towards the front of the cab. The exhaust mounted directly in front of the windscreen might cause visibility problems, but this section of the vehicle otherwise looks fantastic. There is space for figures to stand on the platforms flanking the cab and I like the trans-orange 1x1 dome fixed to the roof.
You can remove the roof and windscreen together for easy access to place a minifigure inside, with a printed control console and joysticks. However, I am surprised there is no folding ladder outside the cab. The driver would certainly require one and this seems like a feature that could have been added.
However, I like the clips behind the cab, where you can attach the accessories or perhaps the warning sign. A couple of black 1x2 grille slopes and light bluish grey 1x1 round tiles add extra detail too, so the model looks superb from all angles.
Bulldozers are routinely equipped with a ripper attachment at the rear and this is no exception. Dark bluish grey fins form the two ripper shanks, attached to Technic beams and rams to raise and lower the ripper. I like the printed 1x1 tiles comprising hazard stripes on both sides and the few red Technic elements do not bother me, easily imagined as warning notices or similar.
Overall
I approached 60466 Bulldozer confident that it would be an impressive model, but overpriced like the construction machinery produced last year. However, I am actually fairly satisfied with the vehicle's size and functions for its price of £54.99, $64.99 or €59.99. The working engine is superb and all the expected features are included, apart from a ladder to reach the cab.
My only real concern in relation to the price is whether a LEGO City bulldozer should actually cost so much. For older LEGO fans, who often prioritise detail and realism, I can recommend this set, but I think children might find better value elsewhere. Regardless, this is certainly my favourite LEGO bulldozer to date and complements 2024's construction sets nicely.

Hi you don’t need a ladder to reach the cab , the tracks are the stair way
Nice review! Did not know that was called a ripper.
"Ted Brickle, the only thing they fear is you, rip and tear until it is done!...We'd like to build a mall here"
Thanks for the review. I really want that set. It's on my wishlist ahead of most SW sets releasing on August 1st (which is saying a lot for me), but behind 60471.
Last's year's excavator was a tad expensive but the set is very nice. The mobile construction crane, however impressive, costs way too much. Not even sure if I'll acquire one at this point.
The working engine is a great touch. If I’d gotten this set as a child I’d be particularly interested in that feature.
In the pros list, if would add « no sticker ». I’m ok to pay more for that ;)
LEGO designer did a very good job with this set! The best one still remains 60420 : Yellow Construction Excavator though thanks to its functions! :)
Fair review! As great as it looks, 60 bucks is quite a lot for "just" a bulldozer. Seems like a set aimed more at adults than kids, which is kinda weird for City.
It's an awesome set. Just built it the other day...

What's it with TLG and beautiful City construction stes? This one looks unrealistically realistic...
Cool build, always irks me when other themes constantly uses duel molded parts, yet Lego Star Wars won’t use it for the first ever $1000 Lego set. Has anyone heard of how the upcoming Death Star is now a diorama?!!!!
Honestly no complaints. Looks great, price is fair. LEGO Construction almost always delivers.
Great review! I really like this thing, the size and the colors look fantastic. The designer did a really nice job with this, especially with the inclusion of the working engine!
I very rarely order sets off of the Lego-site anymore, and even then, I will generally wait until there's a hefty discount on. Usually, other sites will reach the point of better pricing, a good deal earlier. I was browsing the PAB though, and I noticed this set. Bought it immediately at full retail price, because dang man - this thing just sparks joy.

Let me just appreciate this moment before Alanis Morissette ruins it by singing about an overabundance of spoons or inconsiderate office-management.
IMO one of the best City themes from a really long time. I'm curious how it would look next to my 7685.
The machine looks great, but the reason why I won’t buy it is simple: it is way too big compared to other City vehicles (26 cm is one baseplate!) I own the mentioned 60074, but even it was too large in my view, so I shrunk it.
Construction sets like this (or even the smaller 60074) look oversized to me. But then, I grew up with stuff like 1876 and 6662.
I prefer the 2015 one.

This was why I didn’t get the new mobile crane- it’s great, but how to fit it into a broader scene?
I have 60074 and was interested in this originally but I’m on the fence re the proportions as it seems to be too tall and bulky.
I’ll need to see it in the flesh.
I will buy this set! And possibly the other construction vehicles. I absolutely love the detailed, realistic build.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you. I just finished building the construction crane and it is absolutely massive. I honestly felt like it was a $150 set once I finished building it, and there are lots of play features. If you get it with a GWP or double points, I think it is 100% worth it and I'd be really surprised if you were disappointed with the value.

@Crux is referring to the song 'Ironic' by Alanis Morissette. It's a running joke around here.
To me 60074 looks much better
Built this couple of weeks ago. Faultless. Love it.
(but at €40 tho :o) )
My son got this last week for his birthday and he loves it! Now I need one too...
You said the set "complements 2024's construction sets nicely". There are no photos of the bulldozer with last year's sets in the review. Is the bulldozer to scale with the 2024 construction models? Asking because it looks quite large. Thank you.
Beefy but sleek. This one is a future classic for sure!

I have been on Brickset for over 3 years (as far as I remember) and I've still yet to learn all the jokes running around here.
Probably looks good with 60420, but lifting the front scoop by 1cm will soon lose interest. For 100 pieces more 60467 looks a lot more fun than either of these (and even model B potential).

This new one might look more impressive, but I prefer the simpler (and smaller) one from the past.

Why? People use the tracks all the time to board extra large bulldozers. Watch Gold Rush and you see that all the time.

It may not be missing a ladder but it’s definitely missing a white rangefinder.

That is true for some bulldozers, but not all. I just think a ladder would be a nice addition, as another simple feature to include.

60467 it is not sold in my country
I have never paid attention to construction subtheme sets. This looks amazing. And those other two you linked in the beginning also look amazing. I had no idea. I am not one to need construction vehicles, BUT LEGO designers have done a great job with them.
You mention that it is not possible to adjust the angle of the blade. Though, looking at the building instructions, it can be achieved by swapping the 3X5 angled Technic beams attached to the blade for 5M Technic beams and omitting the Technic pins shown in steps 181 and 192.
As a civil engineer and professor of road construction at the university, this set is perfect for me, for my diorama of Lego Construction Sets that I have at the office!!
I will buy it and will join the 60409 Mobile Construction Crane and 60420 Construction Excavator.

That is like, fantastic.
I'm tempted to use it to go on a rampage and demolish my Lego town.
Shouldn't one of them have a different colored hard-hat, say in white to indicate 'who's in charge' (I'd say 'Foreman', but some might be offended). I mean; yes, it's probably the guy w/the name-tag, and...the...utility...HOLY JIM GORDON, IT'S BATMAN!!!:D
I bought this set as soon as it was available, after buying the crane and the excavator I wanted some bulldozer and wow, they made it. It fits these earlier elephant sets by the "I'm big and sturdy" appearance.
I've always felt that this line is made of machines intended for work outside city blocks, like constructing a new airport or spaceport or demolishing an old one. So the scale is very ok for me - I do have a spaceport to build. Approving scale I also approve the cost of this set. It could be nice to have another bulldozer matching the scale of, say, 60324 , but for now I'm happy. I'd like to have a dump truck matching 60420 too.
One problem I see with 60466 is that the operator sits too low in the cockpit and is able to see more or less nothing around at ground level. That exhaust directly in front doesn't help. Besides that it's a great set.

Depending on the story you want to tell, the operator might navigate through use of an on-board camera, or a drone, or the screams of the fallen. It's fine, everything's fine.

I still love that in the video for "Word Crimes," during the line "Irony is not coincidence," there are two pictures: A fire truck on fire, labeled "Irony," and a bride and groom getting rained on, labeled "Weather." Gotta love Weird Al!

True! And immediately after placing the driver in the cockpit I started looking for good places for supporting cameras on the bulldozer and found some. I didn't think about a drone, I admit, and somehow wanted to avoid screams at all. But there's a but. I expect a well designed set to support my imagination, not to need it to remain reasonable. In other words where is a big display for cameras?
I know, I know, there is no need for old fashioned displays, all the feed goes directly to HUD.
A very good looking set, indeed. It's on my wanted for sure. Thank you for the review.

I have 60409 Mobile Construction Crane and 60420 Construction Excavator on my wishlist still, but that list is too long for me to buy all sets that are on it. With this nice review of 60466 Bulldozer the list grew even longer, but the chances for these construction vehicles to be actually added to my collection also have grown significantly.
