UCS Death Star: last day for GWP
Posted by Huw,
Today is the last day to secure the essential companion set to 75419 Death Star, 40771 TIE Fighter with Imperial Hangar Rack, as a gift with purchase at LEGO.com.
The orbital battle station is on back order in North America, so you may have to wait a week or two before you get your hands on it, but if you order it now, at least you'll have the imperial starfighter to fill the gap in the hangar bay when it does arrive.
It's the last day for the other current GWP, 40772 Celebration Series: Luminous Ghost, too, so best get your order in ASAP.

I wonder how many lefotvers they will have…
Have we decided yet whether the GWP is undesirable and worthless even for people buying the set, or it's vitally important and the set is incomplete without it?

For me, it was a fun incremental addition, and though I've not gotten far enough into the build to put the GWP in, I expect I will display it that way. Doesn't seem essential per se, but not worthless. Just a nice little bonus, kind of like the Animal Crossing GWPs where I don't need them in any way, but they add to the scenes.
I like the Death Star set (just haven't bought it because I tend not to buy sets over £200), but I'm not a fan of the GWP at all and wouldn't even want to display it in the Death Star. Whereas the Imperial Shuttle is a relatively good looking small-scale portrayal of that ship, the TIE Fighter just looks like a Juniors/4+ set and doesn't belong near a UCS build.

Well the fact that the Lego site didn't crash when the death slice was launched and that there are still GWP left over for the last day should be somewhat of an indicator that the sales of the set isn't meeting the hype. Like the Simpsons couch GWP, I imagine 40771 will show up again.

Correct. Set and GWP undesirable and worthless

Several people found the GWP interesting enough that they ordered the parts instead of buying a death star.
Show it's both overpriced, getting the parts is cheaper than buying the set.
And contains no rare parts, like 40693 wings *cries*

The website did place visitors in a queue when the set was launched.
At the moment, all anybody has are anecdotal guesses about the set's performance, using those anecdotes to support whatever they want to happen.

Vitally worthless.
The most important question imho is
Who cares?
I went to my local lego store in Glasgow to see it in person.
Sadly there wasn't a display model on show and the set was on the bottom shelf near the back of the store.
I think that says it all about how the price point has tested pre-sale

@LEGO : Patience, my friends. In time, @StyleCounselor will seek this *GWP* out, and when he does, you must bring it before him. This GWP has grown strong. Only together can it make this set complete.
@LEGO : Come, boy, see for yourself. From here, you will witness the final destruction of the LAN and the end of your insignificant rebellion.
[ @StyleCounselor ’s eyes go to his wallet]
@LEGO : You want this, don't you? The desire is swelling in you now. Take your wallet. Use it. The set is incomplete. Strike me down with your feedback. Give in to your FOMO. With each passing moment you make yourself more my servant.
@StyleCounselor : No.
@LEGO : It is unavoidable. It is your destiny. You, like your paycheck, are now *mine*.
@StyleCounselor : Soon the GWP will be dead, and this set with it.
@LEGO [laughing] Perhaps you refer to the imminent end of this GWP? Yes, I assure you, we are quite stocked to release it again, during 1/2X Points.

@LEGO : Everything that has transpired has done so according to my design. Your friends, up here on the sanctuary website, are walking into a trap, as is your Brick Fanatics. It was *I* who allowed the Tie Fighter GWP to be pulled from the original set. Our sales are quite safe from your pitiful little rebellion. An entire pallet of these best sets awaits them. Oh, I'm afraid 75419 will be quite expensive when your friends arrive.

They are. But the big question is: will they ever be on PaB (even at absurd prices)? Being both on licensed sets (LotR), the chances are thin. Nobody needs two Balrogs, but having a few Fell Beasts could make for a nice display.
As for 75419, the set is backorder in North America, so I assume a fair bit were sold.
Interesting that the set is on backorder in the US, whereas sets like the Lion Knight's Castle had to be discounted to sell.
I have completed my Death Slice but haven’t iopened the GWP yet I’m just enjoying the scale of the whole thing it is a spiritual successor to the previous minifigure based Death Star there have been some quality controll issues with mine which has taken a bit of the shine off but overall the GWP isn’t missed at the present time but I can imagine the lack of it will impact sales, I missed Bar a Dur at launch and just won’t purchase it now without the Fell beast the same goes for The Shire and the crime scene GWP.

Definitely worthless to me. I don't consider the shuttle build to be terribly good so I would use the midi-scale Millennium Falcon in the hangar bay, making the GWP unnecessary.
The Death Star looks awesome, but at the price can't justify it. The GWP is a neat addition and fits right in, but it isn't something that would compel me to buy the set.
But with that said, I'm sure based on their metrics, it is selling well enough. They would expect not everyone to afford such a monstrosity, so the threshold is lower to see what is considered positive for them (and let's be honest, how many flops do they really have in recent years?)

I would argue that the Death Slice is likely already an immense success for LEGO, maybe not via overall sales numbers, but for all the intangible benefits such as publicity, re-cementing the brand as a premium product, resetting standards/expectations for overall LEGO price points, and also setting the holy grail status symbol / aspirational flag bearer set for so many of its customers.

They are going to have to rewave the promo, since the sales are going to crash hard after tonight. Especially now we know lego pushed the retirement to 2028, people can now wait it out. They did it with the shire. Almost everyone who bought the shire has the promo now.
The price is too extreme, so LEGO will need another incentive to push purchases like several months to a year from now..

I wanted to read on, but couldn't because I almost fell off my chair laughing when I read the word "premium" in conjunction with this set. Because it's the exact opposite of what premium would be. No prints but tons of cheap lowest quality stickers, cheaped out minifigs with almost every expense spared, and an essential part of the set removed and packed into a GWP you only get when you buy the set at full price in the first couple of days.
I don't know about in the US, but over here the reactions to this set were almost entirely negative, most of the reviews scathing to lukewarm at best. The general consensus seems to be that for the money one would indeed expect the highest quality and no expense spared instead of what we got.
No wonder the set (like the GWP) is still readily available here with no signs of being in danger of selling out or even just hitting back order status.

Feel opposite. It shows Lego probably needs more cashflow. It is now so common for Lego to go on steep clearance. So they used every tactic in the book to milk AFOLs, and guarantee high launch sales. September alone had like a $500 set with gwp every weak. They specifically targeted movies that adults watched as kids such as LOTR and Pirates along with Fomo gwps. Then extended retirement dates of best sellers like 75409 . After such an extreme purchase of 75419 , demand will cool for lego. Expect 40771 reprints to boost sales.

I totally get you and share your sentiments. But I feel VERY confident that this set is an absolute success in LEGO's eyes.
Wow so I've purchased $1220 worth of sets since October 1st from various sources between Lego, Target and Amazon with all the deals going on which totaled 12 sets total (Brickheadz, Ideas, Icons, City and a lot of Starwars) but only spent $512 total. One day this set too will be on sale and can't wait for it until then.
"UCS Death Star: last day for GWP"
Only twelve more months of saving, and I might be able to afford it. Here's hoping that the GWP availability gets extended to that.
Just pulled the trigger. Happy I did. Waited for a while with the underwhelming GWP, and overall price, but I have every other Death Star (minus the UCS Death Star II).
Minifig value helped push me over the top. Really wanted the hot tub trooper, and all the exclusives too. And the size is really impressive when compared to older two ball-style ones.
Is it perfect? No.
Am I happy I bought it? Yup.
Were up to 546 and counting...

Moreover, I absolutely think this GWP is a pack of garbage. I already have more stormtroopers and pilots than I can count. (I rely upon BS to do it for me)
The rack and cart are fine, but nothing special. The TIE is an embarrassing abomination which would make a $1k set look completely childish.
Yet, the main reason is that it ruins part of the set that I find charming. The whole model is a large, fairly busy eye test. The visual balance desperately needs the large negative space of the hangar and its view out to space. I love that part.
Of course, it says a lot about the whole set when my favorite part is the blank space! Shoving a crappy 4+ ship in that space will never be an option when/if I ever acquire the Slice.
I do like the set and plan on getting it but I’m in no rush as I really don’t like the gwp and feel it cheapens the display value of the set. Just looks too crowded and that hanger bay in universe is huge. Personally I’m planning on waiting for a double insider points promo and then displaying it with the excellent midi scale millennium Falcon in the hanger. Then using the insider points discount on the very cool black pearl set.
@yellowcastle : going by LEGO's marketing BS texts, every set appears to be a massive success on every level to them.
Sales success, I don't know. I mean there's apparently over 500 Brickset users alone who bought the set regardless of the little value they are getting for their money and despite the lack of quality especially in the usually so coveted minifigs.
This just serves to show TLG that they can sell the fanbase practically anything at whatever price they choose.
Maybe LEGO Star Wars fans have simply accepted the fact that every other theme gets better treatment and value for money than they do.
Sad, but if I was LEGO I would do it exactly the same way. Lower the quality to the bare minimum and increases prices to as high as possible. Laugh all the way to the bank.
They should have given the set a different name though. "Darth's Dollhouse" for example.

It seemed a lot of websites like IGN, the Gamer, were desperate push sales throughout this weekend. Considering how it took ages for it get backordered, I don't think this one may have sold as well as LEGO liked. LANs like Stud City were promising it get backordered within the day. The sweats may have skipped work/school to line up at the lego store and spam social media on it. But it looks like didn't fly well with average customers. It is far easier to arrange a ups pickup then it is to line up during the middle of a workday at a lego store.
I have watched some lego investors and they all say how they are struggling to make anything off retired lego now. It looks like the market really seemed to popped. Discounts everywhere, retired lego not really skyrocketing. If a portion of the customers are struggling to get 75419, they are definitely not paying premium for older sets. I expect next may the 4th, they will reprint 40771 again. Since majority of the buyers of 75419 have definitely locked their orders in. Lego isn't going to go back down on their insane pricing judging from the 2026 leaks. People might as well get 75419 now, and learn to cut back on other sets.

Agreed, for the huge price tag they skimped on too many things in this set. Over here in the US though it appears to be on backorder, so I guess a good number of people are still shelling out $1,000 for this. Hard to believe with the way that the economy is going over here. I won't be one of them though, glad I have 10188, still one of my favorite Star Wars sets after ~15+ years.

I think reactions are strongly biased though. In the sense of "I wanted to like it, but I'm not buying it and so I'm going to be incredibly negative about it because I'm not buying it". Essentially a love-hate relationship. Whereas a set someone doesn't care about gets ignored.
As can be seen by this article and every article about it, it generates large numbers of comments. I saw it at the weekend. It does look impressive. We had to wait 3-4 minutes to actually look at it due to the number of other people wanting to look at it and take photos. People that then went on to buy other smaller sets. In that sense it is doing its job. This set was never meant for kids or even most adults.

We had to wait 3-4 minutes to actually look at it due to the number of other people wanting to look at it and take photos. People that then went on to buy other smaller sets. In that sense it is doing its job. This set was never meant for kids or even most adults. "
More like ‘I wanted to like it and deep down I do, but I don’t have the money for it so I will be incredibly negative about it’, if we’re being honest.

Yes, I'm sure that is the case too.

"The Death Star looks awesome, but at the price can't justify it. The GWP is a neat addition and fits right in, but it isn't something that would compel me to buy the set.
But with that said, I'm sure based on their metrics, it is selling well enough. They would expect not everyone to afford such a monstrosity, so the threshold is lower to see what is considered positive for them (and let's be honest, how many flops do they really have in recent years?)"
I would argue that the Death Slice is likely already an immense success for LEGO, maybe not via overall sales numbers, but for all the intangible benefits such as publicity, re-cementing the brand as a premium product... "

I don't know.
Speaking only for myself, I could afford it, but if I spend 1000 Euro (or any amount really) on bricks, I expect value, I expect effort, I expect quality. And this set to me delivers in none of these categories.
Yes, it might look impressive, but that's mainly because of its size, if we're honest.
Once you start looking a little deeper you start noticing its flaws. Especially when it comes to the minifigs, which, while they don't matter much to me personally, do apparently matter to many LEGO Star Wars fans - a lot. I mean look at the value of some discontinued sets that command absurd aftermarket prices. What's responsible in most cases? Rare and/or sought after minifigs. You can get these sets MISB but without the figures for a fraction of the price with figures, often even below the original RRP.
So, yes, while for some your argument might ring true, for many I think it's unfulfilled expectations that have led to the negative reactions. It is supposed to be a flagship set after all, and compared to many other UCS sets or sets even at much lower prices where no expense has been spared regardless, this just doesn't cut it.
Who cares about this GWP which sucks almost as much as the Death Slice...

"Just pulled the trigger.
Yup.
Were up to 546 and counting..."
huw will be very happy if they all used his affiliate link (was able to buy some lego using my own cashback affiliate link for lego.com and got 13% cashback, so if lego would stop using affiliate links, prices could come down by at least 10%)

" @yellowcastle : going by LEGO's marketing BS texts, every set appears to be a massive success on every level to them.
As in
Dark Helmet: Did you see anything?
Colonel Sandurz: No, sir! I didn't see you playing with your dolls again!"
I don't really agree with you, but I still had to like your post because of how it ended. I see your Schwartz is as big as mine!
@AustinPowers also said:"ou can get these sets MISB but without the figures for a fraction of the price with figures, often even below the original RRP."
A set isn't MISB if someones taken the figures out. It can be complete except for the figures, but not MISB.
Very glad I skipped 75409, and just used my store credit for 75433. I now have 40771 and 75419 and have till end of 2027 to consider 75409. It just shows how critical it is to budget. Lego can drop a $1k set with a gwp, and if you blew your budget, you can be doomed with an incomplete set. AFOLS likely blew their money on 10365 and 10354 months prior.
I feel like it’s too soon to call how this set appears to be doing. It makes sense that a set this big would make LEGO want to be absolutely sure they have enough before shipping out purchases, hence the back order and the GWP still being available.

My budget would allow me to buy all of those, but I'm not buying any of that overpriced nonsense. Lego just doesn't deserve it the way they abuse their customers these days.
I've only bought two lego sets this calendar year and they were 10 dollars and 30 dollars both on a 35% discount. And I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

It depends, I bought 10365 and I am quite happy with it (as opposed to 'blew' my budget on it). In fact, I also got 76453, 10305, 75978 and 76452; so clearly I could have gotten 75419 instead. For me to get 75419 , I would have to win the lottery - and I mean the top prize (8-digits). Even if I came by 100k tomorrow, I would not get it - other sets take precedence and I would also do something else with that kind of money. Some people like Star Wars a lot and some other, less so. I'm happy this set fulfill your needs but not everyone derives the same amount of joy for any given theme. Most AFOLs were aware that these sets were coming - it was fairly easy to plan ahead.

I bought 10354 earlier in the year with gwp. Even tho I liked the set, Lord of the Rings just wasn't in the same interest or culturally relevance for me as Star Wars. I felt I was just buying to build Lego rather than curate my main interest Star Wars. I prefer Star Wars over LEGO, and will gladly quit the hobby if Lego Star Wars ended. So I learned a painful lesson how crucial it is to curate collections. I ignored a ton of Lego channels like Solid Brix from youtube.
So I had no trouble ignoring 10365, 10367, 10352, etc.
75409 is good but I have 75060 from years ago that was way cheaper back then. And 75433, basically gives better figures, and can be acquired for a fraction of the price.

LEGO is very clever how to rob AFOLs who love shopping. Find movies adults watch as kids, make expensive sets like 10365 and 10354, give them a GWP to incentive buying it asap. Even tho neither franchise are relevant enough now to justify such expensive purchases. Spam lego social media with product placements through LAN, triggering a spending arms race. AFOLs feel like a kid for a day, store expensive set in attic, never to see it, and feel they need more

LAN and affiliate links inflate the price by 10-15%
so pls lets all stop hitting 'like' and 'subscribe' or use the provided links

I had to block LANs from my instagram and youtube. Stud City made an infuriating short where he built the Death Star, cried when he finished it, then immediately got black pearl, built it, and realized he had nowhere to put it. Then he spams affiliate links for every single sail and boasted how the Death Star was going to get backordered fast. DuckBricks having a collection so massive he will never see. LANS on youtube and instagram are so insufferable, but they are never on twitter or else they will get horribly mocked unless they block everyone.
I contain my UCS sets in my room. That way I can always see them and manage my collection.
No offence, but you're pushing it with this Lego set! I think anyone who hasn't bought it yet won't buy it, or at least not until there's a big discount. In any case, it gives us a good indication, the set has flopped haha I'll still be giving it a miss !

Hard agree, and the defecne for this set is mind boggling. Its at best okay for Star Wars fans, but a SW who's willing to spend that amount should really want more from a lego set

Or is saving up, or is clearing space (it is, after all, the biggest set Lego's ever made) or something else, and I guarantee you that there are those who'd love to buy it, but don't have the space and/or money.
