Review: 77005 Knuckles vs. Dr. Eggman Egg Crusher Mech

Posted by ,

The latest Sonic TV adaptation, Sonic Prime, is the franchise’s exploration of a multiverse storyline, exploring many different parallel worlds and characters. The first episode, Shattered, takes place in the familiar Green Hill where Dr. Eggman and his cronies cause lots of mayhem in search of magical gemstones, as they normally do. Is this just a battle against yet another evil machine, or is a devious trick hidden within?

A dip into other Sonic media sources reveals another menacing mech

  • Fun mech design
  • Good articulation
  • Repeated minifigures

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

Box

The set contains four bags and no stickers. The box art depicts some floating islands. Maybe there are multiple realities of Angel Island?

Minifigures

Nothing new here, as Knuckles is identical to the one in 76998 Knuckles and the Master Emerald Shrine. In the first episode of Sonic Prime, Shattered, where the Egg Crusher Mech makes its debut, many of the main characters are featured. I’m curious why they chose only Knuckles to be the protagonist in the set. This would have been another great opportunity to include Rouge at the very least.

Dr. Eggman remains unchanged compared to the other three sets where he has appeared. However, this is the cheapest set of the bunch if you haven’t yet acquired this figure. Mine had some unfortunate scraping of the print on one of his legs. I guess we’ll just call it battle damage.

Completed Model

The Egg Crusher Mech was translated decently well from the source material, with only a couple of compromises to make it more engaging for play. Sadly, its secret true purpose isn’t replicated in Lego form—you’ll have to watch the show to find out what Dr. Eggman was really up to!

The mech’s form is similar to Dr. Eggman himself, featuring a weighty core and thinner appendages. The long arms and articulation emphasise the machine’s lumbering stance.

A large cavity in the centre of the mech allows a standing Dr. Eggman to be in the cockpit, but he can’t actually hold the control handles.

An extra plate under his feet would give him a bit more height and improve his visibility when in the machine, but he does look cute with his eyes just above the edge of the cockpit.

In the show, both of the hands are claws, but in the set, only one is clawed, and the other is a stud shooting machine gun. As this is a set for children, another instance of play is understandably being prioritised over accuracy.

The leg and foot structure strays from the cylindrical form seen in the source material, appearing more chunky and almost Mega Man-like. I actually prefer this, as it's a more interesting design.

Although this is mainly a Sonic Prime-themed set, we’re getting a splash of Sonic Riders with Knuckles’s Extreme Gear (essentially a hoverboard). I don’t recall any Gears having an actual fist on the front, so it might just be a fun extra build provided by the designers. Sadly, it can’t skate across the floor well. Some boat studs on the bottom would have been better for that.

Another play feature for the set is a catapult with boulders to launch at the mech. There is some unnecessary extra structure inside the rocks, I’m guessing to add some weight or hold the two halves together more securely.

A couple of extra Chaos Emeralds are provided to help Dr. Eggman’s mission towards world domination.

Conclusion

The price of the set is a bit high for both figures to be repeats. Within the parallel worlds depicted in Sonic Prime, some very interesting alternate characters are introduced, so I hope we see more sets from this series eventually.

I’m still watching the Netflix show; so far, I’m finding it entertaining and would recommend it if you have access to watch it. Perhaps being a big fan of mechs in general makes me biased, but I was satisfied with the construction of this one, particularly when the relatively young target age range is considered.

Since the Sonic design team seems to understandably love robots too, I would love to see a Shadow vs B-3x Hot Shot battle set from the Dark Stages of Sonic Adventure 2.

Selfishly, I’m just glad to see the speed spheres gimmick was omitted from this wave, and a good ol’ fashion catapult was put in its place.

By in South Korea,

Why didn't you like the speed spheres? Just curious.

Eggman actually uses two distinct Egg Crushers in the cartoon, and unless I'm thinking of the wrong thing, the "secret purpose" alluded to in the review only actually applies to the gray one.

I just think they've had their run. Of the four sets I reviewed that had them, only one cleverly incorporated the feature. In my opinion, the others seemed thrown in.
