An Interesting Idea: Civilization: Beyond Earth Worker Mech
Posted by glenbricker,
The Civilization: Beyond Earth Worker Mech is about as ideal as you could hope for in project execution:
- An attractive model that is well scaled with wide potential appeal, even to those unfamiliar with the source material.
- An excellent model photo with great lighting, angle, and focus.
- Clear branding to express the subject matter, to those that would be influenced by it.
- Additional graphics that augment the model.
It would be fantastic if more projects on Ideas strove for this level of production value.
On top of all the above factors, Civilization, as a brand, has built-in appeal for older audiences while the recently released game brings in newer audiences.
I think the only serious detractor for this project is its thematic overlap with Emmet's Construct-o-Mech which might be a negative in the review, if LEGO feels there would be brand confusion or subject saturation.
Other notable projects from this week include The Red Skull's Car from Captain America, a Canal House Modular, a Gee Bee, Zorro, a Mac 128k with impressive internals, and a dynamic hockey set. These projects and more can be found here.

This is a minor nitpick, but Civilization isn't plural.
Thanks Glen, good write up. I may add the other front arm attachments for interchangeability.
Speaking of Lego Ideas projects, Lego Minas Tirith https://ideas.lego.com/projects/36275 has jumped almost 2000 votes in the past two weeks, pretty good accomplishment.
yeah thx glen its a great write up and its nice looking too
I've been enjoying Civ BE so far (especially the soundtrack - such an epic orchestral score!), and this is a neat little model, but it would need a little more to sell it to me. Maybe if it came with some sort of 'making-of' booklet, exclusive content or something. To be honest, I think it complements the last Ideas project, the neo-classic Space mech.
I disagree with the "only detriment" part. At least 1 other significant detriment is that it's just a copy of somebody else's idea...but a lego version. It's like nothing can hit 10k unless it's licensed. Or no? And that's why it won't have my support.
I wondered when this would be showcased here. I already supported it because it's a fantastic little model. It's got all the great play features we've come to expect from LEGO over the years, plus the Civ series is (mostly) about building.
I only wish I had the hours in the day to play Civ BE. I loved Civ 2 and played it so much back in the day.
'This is an useful model for people that want to make a space utopia.
@Jedijon, yes it's another IP, but if I'm not incorrect, it was posted by Firaxis employees, so it's not a 'copy', so to speak,
