LEGO Ideas Results

Posted by ,

The results of the latest LEGO Ideas review have just been posted. Interestingly, two sets will be produced from this review period, which will be Birds and the Big Bang Theory. We are also informed that LEGO are still 'considering' the Doctor Who sets, which sounds to me like they are pretty likely to be announced at a later date.

You can see the video below, and there's a discussion in the forum.

Birds - Yeah!
BIg Bang Theory - Lame

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Yes the LEGO Birds project! :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

yay on both!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Groovy - this review took a while but congratulations to those going through. Shame about the BTTF train, but let's hope for a good Doctor Who set. The next round could be tricky though as there are some absolutely HUGE sets, but surely they can't refuse Wall-E?

By in United Kingdom,

I don't get why people are so happy about birds, Lego will probably just do a small set with just the robin that will be very hard to get, might be better off with the new creator set.

Big Bang is a surprise but in the video they talk about Lego being on the show so it looks liked that has helped a lot.

By in Poland,

Birds! It's must have for me.
Big Bang Theory - I will wait with decision. Depends on final result.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Big Bang Theory!!!!! :-D

Gravatar
By in Viet Nam,

yeah! the bird project is freakin' awesome

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well, I can't say I'm not surprised by the Big Bang Theory project being accepted. I'm not one for the show myself but I'm happy for all of those who like both LEGO and Big Bang Theory :-)

As for Birds... I'm going to wait and see what constitutes the final set. I might pick one up if it's interesting enough.

By in France,

It's that tug of war again, isn't it? Do you go for the construction beautiful (Birds) that is classic LEGO Zeitgeist or the licensed sets that are much less about build and more about the minifig? I guess LEGO couldn't decide either and went with both?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Which is not a bad thing right? The problem will be the effort/budget they put into each set and how many they will make. My guess is licensed will always win out in the end.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Sweet! Doctor Who might still happen!!!!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Bing Bang Theory is nice, but Doctor Who would be absolutely fabulous. I hope they will still release it. Sorry but I don't like those birds.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Like that the big bang theory won, but will have to see the final design to see if I buy.

Can they please but someone on camera that can act or wants to be there. It looks like they just grabbed anyone that was standing around and put them on camera.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^Well, I'm pretty sure Lego will do a Doctor Who set in the near future since, I doubt they would go through the trouble of even mentioning the Doctor Who sets without knowing they were going to do one. They probably just don't want to release too many Ideas sets at once. Plus, Lego needs to have a statement set each review period.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I met Peter in NYC Comic Con, he is awesome, super friendly. He very much hinted at a Doctor Who set. My guess is that most of the next review sets fail (Besides Wall-e non are realistic) and Doctor Who will be made.

Big Bang seems weird because there is no vehicle, but it will be funny when it shows up in the background somewhere in the show.

And birds seems pointless as we have Creator sets with birds. However they are pretty, but with the limited run and Cuusoo / Ideas tax I'll probably pass.

By in Spain,

Not a fan of any of the winners, but definitely happy to see the BBT being done because I know a lot of people will love it.

I'm very excited to see the next review. I love most of the projects being reviewed on that one!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like the result. Both very different. If they do the BBT with all the characters in the set as it is then great.

As for Doctor Who. I love the show but I am not very keen on either of the ideas presented so far. One is too basic and the other is messy. I think a Tardis and a console would be great. I remember seeing the most amazing lego version of the 9th and 10th Tardis console once. Something more like that would be great.

Please can one of you brilliant lego builders come up with a fantastic and iconic set. : )

Gravatar
By in United States,

At first I was sad they again didn't release anything interesting to me, but then I realized that I am Lego Ideas complete, in the opposite! As a collector I must have all or nothing, so in this case it is nothing.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Nice one! Congrats to our very own Glenbricker!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

If they final TBBT set is anything close to the original design, I'll be all over that! Very excited!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'm not a fan of Dr. Who but am surprised Big Bang Theory was picked over it...does Lego believe Big Bang Theory has the larger fan base?

Was happy to see the birds were chosen and hope the set contains more than one design or like a creator set is a 3 in 1 or 6 in 1.

I believe Wall-e is a given seeing that all the other options are just too large; though I wouldn't mind the X-Men mansion or UCS AT-AT.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

I do not get it, the Research Institute set was getting everybody wild about it, but for Big Bang Theory there are many negative comments... but this is even better than Research Institute... I do not like Birds, but if they give both, great, I hate that the BTTF train lost, to birds, but ok.

The second review wave, with the 8 sets, they are all almost perfect, cannot wait to see which they pick!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Shaase, Big Bang Theory probably has a lot less legal issues than a 50 year old show with 13 different versions of the main character (aka even after the legal issues, which one do you use?) so that's probably why it is taking them longer.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very happy for DeTomaso, Alateriel, and glenbricker!!! Congratulations! I liked both projects and will be picking them up. I am a little surprised by TBBT being approved, but I love the show and will be happy to have that set. Considering that the characters on the show refer to playing with Legos I think it's a great fit (not all the sets have to be for the kids!).

I'm guessing from the fact that they two Doctor Who sets weren't rejected/approved means that we'll likely get one of them. Crossing my fingers!

And glad to see TWO projects approved. I think this finally clarifies that, yes, they can approve more than one in a review (seen too many comments thinking that there was a limit of one).

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

Based on the fact that team Ideas now proves they're able to allow multiple products per season, I think it's pretty imploite to say the other project sucks. At least we should know that the designs aren't final model so perhaps we'll like the products more than the designs.

As for the rejection part, first of all the train proves that the available license doesn't guarantee that all projects would pass. But it is still a shame, I think the train works as long as it's both attractive in license and design.
The Apple Store is same as the previous mini shop series---- I don't hate the licenses but the individual store building isn't good enough.

Personally I wasn't too into Birds because after all we've seen buildable birds in Creator line, though the project provide different thoughts.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

x-mansion would be too wishful thinking, right? would really love it though.. we only have 5 different x-men characters (wolverine, magneto, storm, cyclops, deadpool) in sets released so far, so the mansion would be AWESOME

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm sorry but BBT is garbage (the set, I mean. I have no opinion about the show). What exactly does it do that hundreds of other "interior" sets don't? What building techniques does it showcase that would normally not pass muster for a normal retail set? And are the characters really that iconic to be on the same level as Back to the Future (for the "casual" fan) or Classic Space (for the more dedicated Lego specialist)? I completely baffled by this choice. I think it's stupid, sorry. That's just my opinion.

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

@UtarEmpire
First of all I think it's not the "choice" since each project is reviewed individually. I agree the train should have passed. As for BBT I think this show is actually all about "interior" so that we don't really ask for a whole apartment building idea like the second GB project does.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I LOOOOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEE the Big Bang Theory! I am so getting this set! Hopefully it comes with all the minifigures and not just Sheldon, Leonard, and Penny.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I love BBT and I'm glad they're producing the set so I can have LEGO versions of the characters but the set is essentially just the minifigs and a bunch of artefacts from the show. Nothing to get excited about in LEGO terms.

The characters are not as iconic as Marty McFly and Doc, no, but they are contemporary and the show has a massive following. I don't think it's a baffling choice at all - just a very safe bet. As I said though, as a fan of the show I'm not complaining.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's not taking them any longer to make Dr. Who.

It passed, they're working on it, and I wouldn't be surprised if the people who submitted them have already been contacted about it. Of course we'll never know until after the fact because of inevitable NDAs.

Lego is just being coy for the same reason they were "still considering" the research institute - in case they won't release any in the next review. And/or to not flood the market perhaps with 2 similar TV show sets.

I'm curious to see what comes of the Dr. Who set considering the first to reach 10,000 (Glen's) was not a single idea set and is now strangely not on the Ideas site unless I'm missing something, and AndrewClark2's was more of a coherent concept but was second to reach 10,000.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very interesting. I was assuming Birds would pass, but BBT was surprising. I haven't watched the show, but I love new figure prints, so I'll definitely pick it up (same with Dr Who when it comes available). I don't watch much tv, but I like figures. I wonder how they will make that a viable set though. Just the living room with a bunch of figures?? Surely that would sell, but will it be enough of the LEGO way?

As far as Birds go, how are they different than the great Creator sets that have been coming out lately. Maybe more detailed and less playable? If they turn out okay, I'll consider picking them up.

When are these likely to hit shelves? Next March?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Lets go Birds!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Congratulations, Glen! I recall that you've been involved with other sets that reached 10,000, but this is the first one being made into a set. Alatariel and you really did a terrific job on it. I'm not a huge Big Bang Theory fan, but dang if I'm not buying this wonderful living room set as soon as it comes out. (And Alatariel is now the first double-winner! How cool is that?)

Finally, a huge congratulations to DeTomasso. It's great to see a non-IP set about nature and wildlife go toe-to-toe with the big guys and come out on top. I hope TLG chooses some good models from his vast repertoire.

I'm delighted with these review results and can't wait for the final product reveal.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I detest the Big Bang theory so I'm really ticked off now, I wish the dr who project won but not the 11th doctor set because I hate him as well. 10th doctor for the win

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

No guarantee that a Doctor Who set will be made. Didn't the Land Rover Defender set earlier this year go for additional consideration and still be rejected with the results of the following review?

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Ap3X: Is it really that safe? The inherent problem with licensed sets on Ideas is they get huge numbers of votes from fans of the license in question (BBT) who vote for it solely on the basis of "wow cool someone made a set about a show I like!" as opposed to something that they would actually go out and buy. Compare that to birds which took months if not years (and I could be wrong here) to get to the required number of votes because of the relatively smaller pool of potential voters who are conversely more serious about LEGO.

I guess I feel that Ideas ought to be more than just a platform for people saying "hey I like this movie/TV show/video game, make it a set pls thx". There needs to be an innovative build behind it and BBT simply doesn't qualify. It may be a funny show that lots of people like, but it just doesn't make for a remotely interesting build. Sorry.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Congrats to the winners. WALL-E will surely pass the next one, given its pedigree + its awesome!

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

So glad that more than one project can pass a review stage. Love the Birds project and would love to put them in a show case, as for the BBT, congargulations but I hope TE official set is more like a complete hose (kitchen, bedrooms, living room, etc) and a roof.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@UtarEmpire - I think at this point Ideas is so well-established that they don't have to worry about sets not selling well. People know that the quantities are limited, so it seems that whatever LEGO releases is going to sell out. Even if I wasn't a BBT fan, I'd still buy the set because I know it may sell out soon.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yay! Big Bang Theory! If the set is great, I'll buy it. If it's bad, I'll still buy it! :)

@UtarEmpire: Yes, but look at the success of the Back to the Future set. The Big Bang Theory will attract even people who are not fans of Lego, and may get those people to buy more sets.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Birds sounds good. Hopefully LEGO will pull it off. Big Bang Theory - we'll see. :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lego Birds is a great Idea and fits well with the Creator Animals that are already produced.
Big Bang! There could be some great new printed elements of out cities in this set. New clothes for our minifigs and some takeaway food cartons. How about a mini-mini-mini Death Star printed on a lego ball ??? :)

In the next review period I can only see the Hubble Telescope passing. Which is a shame for the X-men mansion, Ghostbusters HQ and Wayne Mansion which are all brilliant MOC's.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is pretty amazing news from Lego - a classic great idea with Birds, an AFOL pleasure with Big Bang and considering Doctor Who will be Lego waiting for the BBC license to run out on the other blocky version. I hope we get it!!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

The birds set could be nice depending on the final product. Not interested in the BBT-set at all though, but I guess it being something completely different helped. Much preferred the non-approved Sherlock set ... but I guess that just betrays my taste in TV shows :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Big Bang? Are you kidding me? What a joke.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Cant wait to get the Big Bang Theory Set, just hoping it doesn't get too dumbed down! Really don't see the appeal of the birds set though unless it gets a bit more colourful and interesting.

Really hope Wayne Manor or X mansion make it next time, but I doubt they will.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Big Bang Theory will sell like hotcakes...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think Wall-E has a good chance of making it. Really wish the Wayne and X-men would become sets but sadly I don't expect either or the invisible hand to pass. Shame really cause i'd buy all three they look great.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Birds? Excellent choice. Would buy those pretty quickly.

TBBT? Just... why? They should have just done the first Dr. Who set and been done with it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

First Simpsons, then Big Bang. I really thought Big Bang had a 0% chance. I wonder what's next on the list of... Uh... Odd TV shows. At least people might now stop saying "i hope this beats x in the review!".

Gravatar
By in United States,

YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! BIG BANG THEORY!!!!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I hope LEGO creates a whole Dr Who theme, not just one set. Children watch it too, not just adults, so it should sell well across all of LEGO's existing demographics and even some other people.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was very surprised by TBBT passing. I'm not sure if I like the show or not, of the three episodes I've seen I thought 2 were awful but one was fantastic, so perhaps I've had an odd experience with the show. I'm indifferent about Birds, not so sure why people like it so much, but if it's a good final product I'll get it. I was shocked that they didn't accept Dr. Who, but it makes sense for them to strategically release it later as the other sets next review have no chance of making it past review (except maybe Wall-e)

Gravatar
By in United States,

The "Big Bang Theory is dumb" comments are getting pretty old. I used to say it was dumb until I actually watched it and really enjoyed it...and it's the most popular comedy on tv right now for a reason. Hopefully the people ripping on it have actually given it a chance. But who cares, people like different things and not everyone will like it. I'm a fan of Dr Who too, and looking forward to one of those sets getting produced in the future! But for now I'm just happy to be getting this set! The Birds set looks like a Creator set so I'm not too excited, but they look pretty cool.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Whoah! I'm amazed that the Big Bang Theory got through. Any opinions of the show, the set, etc aside, they're totally irrelevant given that the show should surely have been disqualified because of its adult content, particularly the prominent place that sex has in the show's themes and storylines.

If TLG are happy to allow it despite that then the set is good and makes sense and all the opinions on the show and the set are pointless as the project got to 10,000 votes. Some people hating it doesn't negate the large number of people who like it.
Any discussion beyond that is just one matter of one opinion vs another, so expressing them is fine but really, why would it be worth the effort arguing over it?

What I really want to know though is, has TLG changed its policy on adult content in licensed themes?
What I really, really want to know is, does this mean we can try Firefly again...? ;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

So very happy about the birds project. Wouldn't it be great if the Ideas team could find a way to make the kit at least semi-creator like so that 3-4 models would be possible using the same batch of bricks.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What a strange choice BBT is...
But whatever, good for fans of the show I suppose.

Birds is a much more interesting product to me - classic simple brick building. I hope they do it justice.

If Wall-E doesn't pass the next round, I will be devastated.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@zipsforbananas
I too was surprised that TBBT was accepted given its overtly adult content. To be honest, I feel a bit uncomfortable about LEGO - a toy aimed mostly at kids - being associated with a programme with repeated references to sex. I say that as an AFOL and a huge TBBT fan.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Big Bang got picked over Doctor Who?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definite;y excited for those two new sets! They look amazing! As for the one I'm rooting for next time, it's between the X-Mansion and Wall-E.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Honestly, I'm not really excited by any of the sets in this review. I think that Wall-E and the lightsabers are the most likely to be made into sets (personally rooting for the lightsabers). I really want that 7000 pc. AT-AT though. :(

Gravatar
By in Australia,

@Zander, @ zipsforbananas: I also feel uncomfortable about TBBT. I generally enjoy the show, but I feel it's a bit too adult for LEGO, so I'm sort of disappointed it's made it through.

The set itself is a bit boring too, just a living room with some characters. The details are nice though, and I guess that's the appeal.

Birds, I feel, could have been done as part of LEGO Creator. I don't know if it will become a long-running theme of organic bird sets like people seem to hope it will. They're certainly nice MOCs though.

It's a bit annoying they've pushed Dr Who back. I though Wall-E would have been something that would definitely make it through, but perhaps not if Dr Who is being pushed back to ensure next wave has a winner... Although maybe Wall-E won't be done because LEGO already has the Disney licence, so it's something they could make whenever.

Anyway, congratulations to those builders who did get their projects through, it's quite an achievement!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Maybe they delayed the Doctor Who results because they don't want to have to commit to producing three Ideas sets on more or less the same schedule? After all, it seems likely that there might be only one set approved out of the next group; by delaying Doctor Who that would make it 2 and 2 instead of 3 and 1, thus evening out the production schedule.

(And if saying this means TLG decide to approve one of those super-exciting modular-style proposals just to prove me wrong, I'm totally OK with that.... :-) )

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Big Bang too adult?
Has everyone forgotten that Marty's mum has a crush on him in the first Back to the Future?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I was not expecting TBBT to pass at all so this is brilliant news for me! Just like the delorean, I believe that this will appeal to a lot of popculture fans who might not otherwise be interested in lego - and isn't that the whole point? To bring in new fans?

I am hanging out to own a lego TARDIS too, so fingers crossed that it's announced in January. As brilliant as Wall-E is, I'm not convinced that it's current enough to sell well anymore.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^The Big Bang Theory: TV series; ratings per series vary between 12 and 15.
Seems more than just a matter of opinion that it's adult.

Comparing it to BTTF (a film trilogy, each rated PG) and that specific plot point, how many of the relationships portrayed in BBT would you describe as a crush, or would it be fair to say the series generally shows quite a bit more of the relationship than that? ;)

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

BAZINGA!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm super excited for the birds. Big Bang Theory, I couldn't care less.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It seems like most people are either in the Birds camp OR the BBT camp..which shows LEGO knows what they are doing. They will make 2 sets, but also sell out of both of them with the fans being split like this. Short of people boycotting IDEAS all together, I don't see them NOT selling well.

As stated before (and many others) I'm not a fan of BBT, but I'll still buy the set, if at least, for the figures and new prints. Birds is 50/50. I think that says something.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Doctor Who! My favorite BBC show so this is great:D :D

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I'm most happy of the big bang theorie but the birds project is cool too

Gravatar
By in United States,

I find it funny how these two projects passed together. In TBBT Sheldon is afraid of birds. Irony, sweet irony.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I do watch TBBT but... I wouldn't buy a Lego set of it that was more than 15 USD. Really I'd only want the minifigures and little statues...
This certainly saves my money towards other things. I just hope one day a project called 'sharks' with brick built sharks of the many types (hammerhead , white , tiger , blue , etc.) will get approved. I would buy that many , many times to amass really awesome sharks! Not holding my breath though , since sharks 'scare' people. Oh wait crud one of my friends would kill me if I didn't get her a doctor who Lego set...
Let's hope they deny it for my wallet's sake.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm glad this gives us another answer to the puzzle: we now know Lego can indeed produce two if they want to. I just wish we knew the reasons things were denied. I wasn't too excited about this round, but birds projecect is a fine choice. BBT I never thought had a chance, so surprised at that one. I enjoy the show, but not enough to buy a lego set of it. Still, I expect the set'll be featured somehow, and that'll be funny. I know the boys wanted action figures of themselves--perhaps minifigs will do!

Gravatar
By in Japan,

I'm finding it hard to express just how disgusted, offended and disappointed I am that LEGO are making a set based on The Big Bang Theory, a show that goes out of its way to insult geeks, and more damningly, showcase such relentless and scathingly cruel treatment of the differently abled.

For the first time in my entire life, my adoration of The LEGO Group has been called into question.

Gravatar
By in United States,

i am so happy they picked tbbt! we had some super smart kids in our school. i can see them in the rolls played on tbbt. they were wonderful people. one even proved a theory in a trig book wrong. Bazinga! i think part of this choice was how fast this project reached 10,000 support.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My wife was excited for Big Bang Theory, and also liked the birds project. So that's a double win in my book. Anything that ups her appreciation in LEGO is a good thing.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

With the Big Bang winning there might be some concern as to availability. This is one of those sets that crosses boundaries. There are people who love the show, they will want to get this set just because it has to do with Big Bang. Then there are the actual Lego people who will want it.

This set is looking more and more like the Research Institute (RI). Get them while they are hot, I am sure they will not last and that there will only be a limited amount released.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Congratulations to Alatariel. The second set in a short time accepted by LEGO. Big Bang, I hope it comes out soon and find also the way in one big bang episode in TV.
