LEGO KPop Demon Hunters - What could the sets be?
Posted by CapnRex101,As soon as I watched KPop Demon Hunters last summer, I felt confident LEGO sets would follow. After all, LEGO already has a strong relationship with Netflix, releasing sets for Wednesday, ONE PIECE and Stranger Things recently, while the movie's style feels somehow appropriate for a LEGO theme.
However, whereas the likes of ONE PIECE translate easily to LEGO sets, based on the variety of memorable ships and locations, I think KPop Demon Hunters is a little harder to predict, since the movie is very character-focused. Nonetheless, I have tried to come up with some ideas.
This article covers the whole of KPop Demon Hunters, but does not spoil any major plot revelations from later in the movie.
Character models
The press release mentions a set that will be available to pre-order in the spring and released later this year. Based on the teaser video, that is evidently going to be a large-scale version of Derpy, a supernatural and delightfully befuddled tiger! I expect this model will be similar in style to the likes of 43243 Simba the Lion King Cub, albeit bigger and presumably accompanied by Sussie, a six-eyed magpie.
However, we know the upcoming set will be designed for ages 9+, so I wonder whether we will see a more detailed 18+ rendition as well. After all, there has been no shortage of static animal models produced lately and I can easily imagine a seated version of Derpy with Sussie perched on top, especially since KPop Demon Hunters is popular with all ages, including adults.
BrickHeadz sets also seem inevitable. In fact, you could probably sustain a year of BrickHeadz figures just on KPop Demon Hunters, considering how many costumes the titular hunters wear over the course of the film! Whether launched separately or in packs of three, their introductory 'How It's Done' outfits would be a natural starting point, followed by their leather battle attire and the 'Golden' costumes. A demon version of Rumi could be fun too.
All are very distinctive, so the costumes should translate well to BrickHeadz figures. The same can be said for the Saja Boys and particularly their 'Soda Pop' appearances. Not only are their shirts exceptionally colourful, but they, like HUNTR/X, have interesting hairstyles, which makes them ideal for the blocky figure format.
The five Saja Boys look relatively similar in their demon forms, although a demon Jinu seems possible as a lone figure, or perhaps with the aforementioned demon Rumi. Otherwise, I think Derpy could work in the BrickHeadz format, probably constructed much like 40797 Eeyore.
Finally, perhaps KPop Demon Hunters could see the brick-built mini-doll format return, earlier used for 75682 Elphaba & Glinda Figures and 76780 Wednesday Addams Figure. Rumi, Mira and Zoey would doubtless look impressive in that style, highlighting their costumes and maybe even including alternative outfits, as Wednesday's figure did.
Play sets
I assume there will also be traditional play sets, although these are arguably harder to picture. There are few vehicles or other subjects inherently suitable for LEGO sets featured in the film, based on the kinds of sets produced to date, at least. There are some to consider, however.
The HUNTR/X girls are introduced aboard their private jet and this could become a fun LEGO set. An incredibly one-sided battle against a group of demons quickly breaks out and destroys the plane, so there is an opportunity for some functions and a brilliant character selection, with Rumi, Mira and Zoey in their 'How It's Done' costumes, plus a couple of demons.
I think a set inspired by 'Golden' would be essential, as the movie's most popular song. There are a few possible approaches to such a set, the most obvious probably being a simple stage with the three heroines wearing their 'Golden' costumes. However, I would probably reserve a stage-based model for the movie's climactic scene, so maybe the golden car seen in the music video would be an appealing option for a lower price.
That climactic scene involves Rumi, soon joined by Mira and Zoey, confronting the Saja Boys and their demonic overlord, Gwi-Ma. Gwi-Ma could be represented as a fiery backdrop for the scene, with HUNTR/X and the Saja Boys on a stage in front. A format similar to 42616 Heartlake City Music Talent Show could be successful, in my opinion.
On the subject of the Saja Boys, 'Soda Pop' is another memorable song from the film and the debut performance features the group dressed in their trademark outfits. Maybe the soda can stage could become a LEGO set, although one without very many features. LEGO employees occasionally use the phrase 'playful display' to describe sets intended for children and with play value, but designed to look good on a shelf in a child's bedroom. I could imagine a 'Soda Pop' model exactly like that.
Minifigures or mini-dolls
Of course, a significant question concerning LEGO KPop Demon Hunters is whether the sets will feature minifigures or mini-dolls. Personally, I favour minifigures because I find them more collectable, although there is certainly an argument to be made that mini-dolls are better suited to the movie's animated characters.
We have actually seen how minifigures could look in LEGO Fortnite and I would be happy with those designs, but if I had to guess, I think the sets will contain mini-dolls. My understanding of LEGO's research regarding minifigures and mini-dolls is that girls do not especially identify with minifigures, but I would love to know whether there is any data regarding boys and mini-dolls.
As adult fans, I believe we tend to associate mini-dolls with themes designed primarily for girls, but that is not necessarily how a child thinks. I expect the KPop Demon Hunters range will use gender-neutral branding in an effort to appeal to as many children as possible, so perhaps mini-dolls would be more appropriate, much though I would love minifigures.
The ideal situation would be to have both! Wicked has recently shown that is possible, as most sets include mini-dolls, while 75685 Emerald City Wall Art contains several minifigures. A series of Collectable Minifigures would also suffice and the selection of twelve almost decides itself:
- Rumi ('How It's Done')
- Mira ('How It's Done')
- Zoey ('How It's Done')
- Jinu ('Soda Pop')
- Mystery Saja ('Soda Pop')
- Abby Saja ('Soda Pop')
- Baby Saja ('Soda Pop')
- Romance Saja ('Soda Pop')
- Rumi ('What It Sounds Like')
- Jinu ('Your Idol')
- Celine
- Bobby

Same
This list seems, ahem, a bit light on ideas. I just can't fathom trying to watch this but maybe my kids will get into it.
This targets my friend and her two daughter who are both Lego & K-Pop Demon Hunters fans. My guess is mini-dolls for the play sets and minifigs for the eventual "adult" collector sets. It'll mirror Wicked for sure.
If the movie really only got 500M views, I can't imagine it's that popular since at least half of those came from my house.
Yes, please!!!!

Don't give LEGO any ideas....
Wait I thought it was a show. There is ONE (1) movie and they make sets for it A YEAR later? That's crazy. Has that ever happened outside of sets for classic movies, decades after the fact (Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Goonies, Back to the Future, etc.)?
I tried Googling for "Demon Hunter builds", but Google kept telling me
"YOU ARE NOT PREPARED!"
Man, whatever, I guess I'll just wait.
Appreciate Brickset covering new themes of course but did not understand anything what this really is about, could not be farther away from the target audience of course and will probably have to block this in an effort to survive mentally here for the coming weeks.

The movie came out in 2025. The current year is 2026.

Wow it felt eons ago. Okay so it's not years but a year later. I'll edit my comment to avoid further confusion.

It's not "years" later. The movie released last June. It has been out for a little over 7 months. Not even ONE year. (EDIT: I see you already corrected yourself.) But to answer your question - Despicable Me.
Personally I think all these sets will come out too late - the majority of people hyped over the film belong to plague-of-locusts group that constantly swarms from one hit product to the next; i.e., they will have moved on to other things by the time these sets come out. That said, I haven't seen tons of merchandise for the film so far, and the products that do get the branding sell well, so maybe there will be a latent demand for merch that reignites peoples' excitement for the film. Time will tell.
The merchandise industry (and netflix’s marketing department) was caught completely by surprise by the film’s success - it’s basically a pure word of mouth slow burn megasmash, which we don’t get much of these days. That we’re even seeing merch this soon is a sign of some serious scrambling to catch up behind the scenes from what I’ve seen of the news coverage.
I’m looking forward to seeing the film eventually, it seems like it will be a lot of fun and I’m very interested to see what Lego makes of it.
@GirlWoman: You forgot that movie/franchise, that I can't remember the name of...something about a "War in the Stars"...:D
Seriously ('rocks hand'): I saw a 'leak' that we're a CMF this year of Shrek...had to look, sure enough; new movie...next year...(sigh)...I wish TLG would (a) focus on what they have, but/and (b) cut down on the Dis-stuff...seriously (and not rocking hand on this:)).
Also, relatively; to the question: "What could the sets be?"...the 'optimistic pessimist' in me says: a cash-grab, flash-in-the-pan, but ultimately and 'the end of the day': "not for me"...and I'm good with that:)

The rumored Shrek sets also feel like nostalgia slop - just for a different generation. The first movie is 25 years old, after all.

I hate to break it to you but...Shrek was NOT released in the 1990s
One set I could see them doing is the skyscraper they live in, likely to a similar scale to 76166. They don't show too much of the interior in the movie but they could add a living room ("Couch! Couch! Couch!"), costume closet, a bedroom, and maybe a lobby on the ground floor.
These could be great for Smart Bricks, actually. A stage set could rotate through HUNTR/X hits.
I really hope there are some smaller sets though, and I think it is pretty easy to do some fun scenes in the film that way, such as:
- The HUNTR/X apartment, even with just the couch or Rumi's room
- The variety show with a small TV set and slide (includes 2 Saja Boys)
- The autograph tables (includes 2 other Saja Boys)
- One of Jinu & Rumi's outings, with simple scenery
These could easily be done in the pocket money range so that kids, who are big fans, are not priced out from them.
For everyone over 40: this movie is basically Charmed mixed with Jem and The Holograms.
Personally I hope we get a brickheadz 5 pack of the Girls and derpy (or replace derpy with Jinu), an 18+ avengers tower style modular, a playset of the plane scene at the beginning, a 4+ set of the saja boys soda pop concert, and the aforementioned large statue of Derpy, to check everyone's boxes...
Minidolls for the Demon Hunter girls, minifigures for the Saja boys.
Issue solved. You're welcome.
Now I know what my parent's parents felt like when my mom was freaking out about "A Hard Day's Night".

This is a common general joke about how people in their 40s perceive the passage of time and how the 90s still feel closer than 26 years.
I don't particularly dislike minidolls, but they do feature significantly less articulation and kpop demon hunters has a lot of movement and action. They just seem like an extremely poor choice for people who want to actually interact with the figures and pose them, but given that this is being rushed to market I imagine we'll see less product research and the inevitable minidolls regardless of what consumers are actually interested in buying.
Leaks mentioned this year is Derpy and Sussie display set, with playsets to follow later on.
The tiger might make it.

While I *do* agree that there will be plenty of people who have "moved on" by the time products start hitting the shelves, this film was a hit with kids in a way that Disney hasn't experienced since Frozen (or maybe if we're being generous, Encanto). I think LEGO sets based on this film will do quite well with kids, as long as they're affordable.

I think fans would want actual movie sounds and not low rent synthesized noises.
One 18+ set with no minfigs.
One 18+ set WITH minifigs. (400$)
Brickheadz of whole cast
the fact that they have announced a sequel and that Golden was up for a Grammy makes it that these sets aren't too far behind the times. If they can recapture the magic of the first one (Frozen II, Zootopia 2) then these are just as timely as if they came out the same time the first movie did.
But real question...are the BrickHedz Saja boys going to have a printed abs tile or printed corn tile on their stomachs? With real popping action.
I would love an affordable set with a brick built tiger (and magpie) with Jinu and Rumi minidolls. Not the Simba scale, but similar to some of the Dreamz sets. Pretty sure this won't happen though.
The three girls in the Golden car would be great.

That’s about as bad an example as I could come up with. The only sets they’ve released were based on Minions 2 (tied to the release of Minions 2) and Despicable Me 4 (tied to the release of Despocable Me 4). They haven’t made any sets based on the first three DM movies or Minions 1.
Many of the major IP launches were also tied to a specific film or show being released, even if the theme extended past that content. SW was launched off of Ep1 (and one could argue also off Ep2, Ep3, the CGI Clone Wars series…). Indiana Jones was launched off of Crystal Skull, LotR off one of the Hobbit films, PotC off of the one with the Fountain of Youth, Dances With Smurfcats off of Dances With Smurfcats 2 (except I don’t know if they made anything but some Brickheadz off the first flick) and so on.
Most of the instances where the sets were based solely on nostalgia for an older work (instead of being based off a new work that was produced out of nostalgia for an older work) have been through Ideas and/or one-off releases (frequently through Icons). Or part of the Speed Champions theme (they kinda get a pass because it’s more about the cars than the films the cars came from). Or the Disney Princess theme (which itself keeps the subordinate IP fresh and relevant even if the films they came from are not). I’m not sure if Brickheadz should also be an exception or not.
Pixar might be the biggest exception to all of this. They did tie a bunch of sets to Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, Lightyear, Cars 2, Cars 3, The Incredibles 2, and Inside Out 2, and two more films (Wall-E and Up) and the Luxo Jr. lamp and ball got nods through Ideas, but they keep releasing Brickheadz based on non-current Pixar films (Toy Story, Wall-E, The Incredibles, Turning Red, Up, Inside Out 2, and now Monsters Inc. that I can think of), plus they just did the little Toy Story train and the new Wall-E/Ev3 sets that weren’t tied to anything at all.

I know the source material is massively popular, so if the sets / figures are at least half decent, this could be a bestseller.

As someone who was born in the late Seventies, the Nineties to me should feel like yesterday then, but actually they feel further away than the Eighties, strangely enough. Maybe because I have more pleasant memories of my time as a kid than as a teen/early twen. Things started shifting again in 2008, when I became a dad for the first time. What an awesome ride it has been since then, coming full circle when our oldest turned 18 last week and is now an adult.
Time certainly seems to fly.
The introduction of smart brick mini-dolls incoming
I haven't seen the movie (although I've thought about checking it out, especially now that it's getting Lego sets), but I wonder how many of what they end up doing will appeal to me. Will probably depend on whether I end up watching the movie or not.

No, but I really wish they would. The only villains they've produced in a whopping 14 sets include a single minifig in the gone-in-a-flash 40511, and a Brickheadz in 40421. Six movies! And all they could muster was one villain, and barely even made her available.

The rumored Shrek sets also feel like nostalgia slop - just for a different generation. The first movie is 25 years old, after all."
The 1990s were ten years ago and I won't hear otherwise."
I hate to break it to you but...Shrek was NOT released in the 1990s"
It is said that the years start coming and they don't stop coming.

Hey now, that post was an all-star!
Since this is kind of girly theme, I'm excpecting minidolls, too, naturally. Brickheadz also, of course, why not.
I'm guessing they are going to do a sequel, I saw on a different site I haunt that other toys are coming out soon. Like was previously mentioned, there haven't been a lot of toys for this movie, and I think the popularity outside of South Korea surprised Netflix. All of the toys are hitting the shelves a little later this year, most likely to line up with the sequel announcement or release.
It's a pretty decent flick if you are into fun anime.

"One set I could see them doing is the skyscraper they live in, likely to a similar scale to 76166. They don't show too much of the interior in the movie but they could add a living room ("Couch! Couch! Couch!"), costume closet, a bedroom, and maybe a lobby on the ground floor."
I hope so, too. Lego models of modern skyscrapers that aren't from Marvel IP are surprisingly rare."
In fairness, they don't exactly make for an exciting build-experience. Even the Daily Bugle - the most mundane of skyscrapers, and as such the least out of place in most city-settings - had, for its biggest complaint, that it was "kind of repetitive".
