Review: Collectable minifigures series 29
Posted by Huw,Sixteen years after the launch of the first set of collectable minifigures, LEGO shows no sign of running out of ideas for new characters, although some of them in 71052 LEGO Minifigures - Series 29 are somewhat obscure.
The series, which will be available from May 1st, is something of a mixed bag, containing one excellent and arguably overdue figure, several attractive ones, and some that I have no idea what they are supposed to be. There are no desirable 'army builders' this time, though...
Summary
71052 LEGO Minifigures - Series 29 - Complete, 99 pieces.
As usual, the series contains stand out figures and others that are not so appealing.
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
Robot T. rex
I have no idea what this is based upon, but the concept and printing is quite cool.
Marine Biologist
We've had plenty of divers before, but this one has an excellent dual-moulded hair/mask piece and comes with a clown fish!
Bionicle Cosplayer
It's perhaps surprising that this figure has not been until now, given how popular it's likely to be. I wonder if it'll be the first of six?
I like the circular reference of the Bionicle character carrying a Bionicle canister.
Monster Hunter
This is the stand-out figure in the series, with exceptional detail and printing on every surface that can be printed on, dual-moulded legs and hat/hairpiece, and an awesome weapon for incinerating and decapitating blood suckers.
Boba Cup Fan
Tea with tapioca pearls in does not appeal to me, but this fun colourful figure does! It's unusual to get unprinted torsos nowadays, especially in the rarer colours.
Trash Monster
I've no idea what inspired this figure and I don't find it very appealing. The pizza box, fly tile, and fish skeleton are cool, though!
Chocolatier
One of four in the series based on modern day occupations.
Tuba Player
This is perhaps the closest to an 'army builder' in the series: a whole marching band of them would look impressive. The tuba looks a bit un-LEGO-like, though: the combination of pearl gold and slightly coarse detailing makes it look a bit cheap and nasty.
Football Goalkeeper
There have been surprisingly few footballers in CMF series and this is the first goalkeeper. He's holding the new style of ball with a hole in it that was introduced in the Nike sets.
Cute Witch
This is my second favourite of the series: not only is the figure bright, colourful and finely detailed, but it introduces a new sitting cat mould, which makes a change from all the dogs that the CMF series usually yields.
Mysterious Ronin
This is another one that's printed everywhere, surpassing the detail on similar Ninjago figures. I am not familiar enough with that theme to know if the hood/hairpiece and katana holder are new.
Unicorn Elf
The unicorn first made an appearance last year in 31175 Unicorn Castle, so it's good to have one included here in a cheaper, more accessible set.
Verdict
As with all CMF series, there are some must-haves and some so-so figures in this one. I am sure the Bionicle cosplayer will prove to be the most popular, but my favourite has to be the monster hunter.

You had me at “cheap and nasty”.
Excellent series. Pretty much all of them except the Football Goalkeeper fit into one of my existing displays.
Don't they dare not to use the fish moulds again!
A very good series this time, not a single fig I wouldn't find use for (as is so often the case with the animal costumes).
I really don't like the tie on the head of the cosplayer
Monster Hunter, Mysterious Ronin, Marine Biologist, and Bonc Dude are the must-buys for me.
The rest are easy passes.
@Huw, what are your opinions on whether they should/will make a D&D CMF series 2?
The Trash Monster is far more interesting than I realised, with the pumpkin head underneath, the new fish skeleton mould, and the two printed tiles: a new fly print and the binned pizza box.
I'll have to get a few of the tuba player as well to make a marching band...maybe a lot for a Paddy's Day display.
Another great series! Least favourite is probably the ‘Mysterious Ronin’, not sure we needed a Ninjago figure in the series, but otherwise some fantastic figures and new parts!
Isn’t that vampire in the Monster Hunter’s wanted poster from a previous CMF wave?
The Trash Monster, with its head mold, allows LEGO to cheaply make Clayface. Will they capitalize on this excellent opportunity? One can hope…
Mysterious Ronin is the most justifiable one for me to get here, as green is my favorite color and the armor is a recolor of one I thought was retired, so that’s pretty cool.
Is the fly tile new or have I missed it?
That Monster Hunter is fantastic! I'm semi-interested in getting the Chocolatier.
Disappointing that marching band figure doesn't match the marching band in shopping street modular
The trash monster reminds me of https://croc.fandom.com/wiki/Goo_Man_Chu
The Trash Monster is the best one

I'm pretty sure she's twn530 from 31167, though her parts are still available on PAB
I think the Bionicle cosplayer might have benefited from a neck bracket so that the gear on the back actually stuck out a bit more. Overall, though, there’s some great minifigures here; I think the trash monster is my favourite. Having a separate detailed head under the slimy head piece is an excellent touch.
Really strong wave. Tahu is the standout for me (obviously a Bionicle fan), but there are quite a few here I'm interested in. Lloyd especially, who seems a bit older here with more pronounced cheekbones and maybe longer hair. Has some interesting implications for the future of the series.
Also really love the Monster Hunter. She'll pair well with the Steampunk inventor from a few series back.
Trash Monster is fun and love the fish bone. And the Robot T-Rex really give me Wowee Roborapter vibes.
Not my favourite series of minifigures, but the stand outs for me are the Monster Hunter, Trash Monster and the Witch, but that last ones mostly for the cat.
Will be ordering a set as soon as MinifiguresPlus announces a discount code.

I'll publish an article later!
Been a while since I liked a CMF enough to just flat-out want to buy the entire series. That's not to say I like all of these - but I damn sure like enough of them.
These all look amazing
I wonder if the trash monster is based on Muckman from TMNT. He already reminded me of that character but the pizza box might be yet another clue.
As for the robot T. rex, he kinda reminds me of Mecha Godzilla.
The Aperture Science logo on the Robot T-Rex head raises some interesting questions about the present-day status of the praying mantis DNA project.
The dino suit is based off of the Roboraptor, a classic 2000s toy!

I think you're right but she also looks a lot like the vampire bassist from the Vidiyo blind boxes 43108-11. Maybe that's the same character and she was in a band when she was in her 180's.
I don't think there needs to be a familiar solid inspiration for everything. I love wacky characters like the Robot T. Rex and Trash Monster for being so out-of-the-blue. The Trash Monster is my favorite. Such an unusual entry into the "spooky" pool, but so well caricatured and with lots of fun parts. I need to build him a dumpster! Would have been fun to get a trash can part to encircle the legs like the flowerpot piece from Series 18.
I like that the Monster Hunter is pursuing the Creator vampire, but I wish something had tied her into 2012 Monster Fighters instead. With that eyepiece, maybe she's Major Steele's daughter? I also want a 1x1 garlic bulb element for food or ornamental building purposes, akin to the ice cream swirls, and this would have been the perfect introduction for one. A crossbow and a garlic bulb would be far better accessories to me than a gunblade.
Lloyd looks like he got older...again. Did he age up a second time at any point in the show? Is the figure canon to existing material?
The robot T-rex feels like a reference to the HORIZON series to me. The color scheme and general "robot dinosaur" subject matter both seem referential.
Still kind of a weird choice, but overall I like this series a lot. Great variety, wonderful new molds, and another heavily trans-coded figure with the Cute Witch.
Though none look bad there's not a single one that screams must have to me.
Might get the Marine Biologist for Marlin/Nemo and the Unicorn Elf for, well, the Unicorn.
Zero interest in Bionicle, and most of the others are also kind of Meh at best to me.

It was probably out of production, but then again I’m not avidly following each and every use of this piece, I just want a Clayface minifigure.
No. Luh-loyd. L-l-o-y-d.

"One of four in the series based on modern day occupations"
I counted five: Chololate maker, Soda Cup girl, Goalkeeper, Tuba player, Diver.
I’m out here batting for the marine biologist. I’ve been waiting years for a scuba mask that doesn’t need a motorcycle helmet.
I was legitimately grossed out when I first saw the Trash Monster lol. Absolutely gonna seek that one out
Lego really will do everything except properly revive Bionicle.
All of these are beautiful, especially Tahu. Now to wait 3+ years for the other 6 Toa... (I figure we're unlikely to get more than 1 per series if anymore, and that's only if the next 6 series are unlicensed)
It seems like a pretty solid series, though I'm confused by the choice of a dual-sided head for the boba tea mascot, as well as the lack of an actual boba tea accessory.
Gave up Lego for the first time before Minifigures had been invented. Now wish there was an option to exclude them from sets to save a bit of cash so, for me anyway, Collectable Minifigure is an oxymoron!

I think even that is highly unlikely.
In case you were wondering, 106 is Lego's color code for Bright Light Orange.
Regarding the Tahu back print, it's a pretty big oversight not to draw the 20T Technic gear right. And a LEGO Designer should know that the axle hole is symmetric to the teeth and not as shown rotated at a 45° angle.

Seems more like the former that I’m probably thinking of, but as they’re only really a change in makeup and neckwear apart from each we can’t rule out them being the same person!
I personally would love to have a Tuba Army at my disposal. "Charge on, men, to the Bass!!!"

That head-mould has been in use for the past five years. It first popped up in Vidiyo wave 2, and has been used frequently in DREAMZzz.
The Robo T. Rex feels like a blatant reference to the white robo dinosaur toys from the 2000s - Wowwee appears to be the company.
I wish Tahu just had a head inspired by the actual gray skulls beneath instead of a human, ideally printed on a translucent pink for lightpiping. I suppose I'll just have to track down one of those myself. Still a great figure.
Lloyd looks great for someone so often made before. Witch is cute too. Definitely a strong series overall.
Wonderful series.

For all intents and purposes, the Creator Haunted Mansion is a Monster Fighters set. It contains numerous references to them, including 30201 - The Ghost Clock, the tree in 9463 - The Werewolf, the organ in 9468 - The Vampyre Castle and obviously, 10228 - Haunted House itself. This is all before you even look at the figures.
The CMF is also clearly inspired by Major Quinton Steele, just as the Creator vampire was inspired by Lord Vampyre's bride.
I think the new weapon is appropriate for her and probably much more exciting for most people. They already make 1x1 swirl pieces in white and have been making a crossbow weapon accessory for decades.

Thank you Huw! My order has been placed :-)
Really good series. I definitely want 8 out of the 12, so I might end up getting the full series. Only the goalkeeper, chocolatier and bubble tea ones I don't feel much for and the tuba player I mildly like, so that's not too bad. Compare that to some recent series which had one or two at best that looked interesting.
In general it's always nice when they do multiple wacky ones and multiple sci-fi and fantasy ones.
Trash Monster has a pube stuck to his back. Nice

The Squishee cup mold would have been perfect for her, but I'm sure it's discontinued. Shark Army General 1 from the Ninjago Movie series has a boba cup with that mold, though--in the right color! I just noticed the blatantly visible reverse head print with the translucent headgear...tremendous oversight. How was that allowed to go through?

The way I see it, a figure referencing something which is in itself referencing Monster Fighters is one step more removed than I'd like. The Monster Hunter is placed into a referential canon, not the original, basically. Of course, that can't stop me from personally adding the Monster Hunter to my Monster Fighters display, or playing her and the Creator set as a legacy to the original group, like a next-generation Monster Fighter with her own vampire rival. (I personally see the Creator vampire as a good match for the Series 2 vampire so she and he can mirror the Monster Fighters couple as parallels. Lord Vampyre was based on the Series 2 figure, while the Creator vampire was based on a Monster Fighters character!).
I also disagree that any piece that exists today would be sufficient as garlic or that a garlic shape wouldn't be useful. A 1x1 garlic bulb with a very short bar on top, antistud on bottom, would be a distinct part and perfect for microscale architectural domes or finials, while being ideal for kitchen or vampire builds too.
I want the monster hunter. Was intrigued by her weapon earlier on, but seeing that wanted tile she is a must have for me.
Trash monster wasn’t on my to-get list, but with all the extras he has, he’s my number 2 pick. If only his blobby head didn’t have a cartoony mouth with his tongue sticking out. It’s the same stupid faces like they did on Vidiyo. Just give him a monster expression.
I probably get robo rex as well. Looks like a toy robo dino. The headprint of the minifig head is also very cool. Like if you make a micro spaceship it could be a space doorway or something. So i probably going to get it.
I like the Bionicle canister. I don’t know if i like the minifig head. It does need others in the future. Fabuland cosplay battling Bionicle cosplay
The chocolatier her colors of her apron don’t really match. That looks wrong. I do like the choco dragon.
And the scuba diver i might get for Nemo. Some Animal Crossing figs need to show it off.
And if you have the Fabuland cosplayers, you definitely want the tuba player as well.
Other figs don’t do it for me. So skip.
I like the cat and the dragon.
Honestly, the trash monster is the only one that I can't find a good place for. I have the old playable football sets, so would happily update the keeper there. A lot of the others are cute. Might grab a six box early on, just tons of fun figs there.
The golden pieces (tuba and monster hunter weapon) look poorly made and clash with the rest. That golden isn't cool. Lego, ditch it and go back to chrome gold, please.
That chocolate dragon looks really cool. We would like it in more colors, please.
I like the Tahu figure, but why can't it just be Tahu and have a proper back of the head? Why does it have to be a cosplayer?
Well obviously for people not into Bionicle who just happen to want to have a cosplayer in their LEGO City, but surely there are less people in that specific situation than Bionicle fans.
I love the fish bones, I love how it's just the standard (dare I say iconic) LEGO fish and not something more elaborate/realistic. I really hope they will re-use it for other sets in the future, it'd be perfect "trash" for a garbage truck set (kind of a shame they just released one) or a restaurant-themed set.

In my opinion chrome gold clashes much, much more with most non-chrome parts. Plus it scratches easily. I'm glad they've largely moved away from it.

I agree! Missed chance for a fun hairpiece that could wear all kinds of funky visors, goggles, etc
No stand out chase ones thankfully so more chance of completing a set without visiting a thousand locations.
I know I'm in the minority but I have absolutely zero interest in the Bionicle Cosplayer, Ditto the Mysterious Ronin and Soccer Player. The Boba Cup Fan just looks silly with the dual sided head that you can see through the Boba costume. That leaves 8 that I have a passing interest in so won't be going for a complete set. The Trash Monster is weirdly interesting while being a bit grotesque. My personal favorite is the Unicorn Elf.
I’ll get a (small) bunch of tuba players who can either march between my modulars in the Silly Hat Parade or become a small whitecoat faction in my pirates display.

Also, @Huw, 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of Bionicle, which explains why they put Tahu in _this_ wave. And why it'll take until 2151 to complete the Toa Mata minifig set.

The Trash Monster is a trash monster. Not sure why it needs any more explanation than that.

You can’t understand why people are excited about a reference to one of the most popular homegrown Lego themes ever, one that sold in such phenomenal quantities it helped save the company from bankruptcy?
It’s perfectly fine not to like Bionicle but it shouldn’t be remotely difficult to understand that a very large number of people like it, and that when a very large number of people like a thing then they’re going to be excited about it.
I just got it! Trash Monster is the cute, Lego version of the Trash Golem from The X-Files ep "Arcadia" (Home-Owners-Association built over a landfill).
Ooh, they wouldn’t be printed, but do they make dual-molded dark-bley legs with red boots? I know they make dark-bley arms. And model paint.
This not to sexiest and was said by my son. Why are most of the mini figures girls and all the boys have girl colors? I didn’t know what to say but have looked back and it is true.

About trash monster comment 'not very appealing'. I'm not concerned. It's not usual to not have appeal for trash.
I'm impressed with the part 'hair + dive mask'. There is a huge contrast between the 2 colors - it looks like 2 different parts.

So we need Lego to improve the gold pieces so they're better quality. That tuba is really bad.
Robot T-Rex : Interesting concept
Marine Biologist : Don’t like single use headpieces
Bionicle Cosplayer : Loved the prints, why cosplayer though
Monster Hunter : Perfect
Boba Cup Fan : Nope
Trash Monster : Fun, lots of goodies
Chocolatier : Meh, ok for the dragon
Tuba Player : Not planning on building a band
Football Goalkeeper : Spot on, but don’t need
Cute Witch : Not to me
Mysterious Ronin : Great prints, nice Lloyd if you need another
Unicorn : Lovely, but not my cup of tea

Half of the figures are girls. That's how LEGO does it now. There were many decades of female characters being the stark minority, and Minifigures series started with a maximum of two. I think it's changed for the better, and if your son has an objection to the presence of femininity in media, that sounds like an issue to guide him out of.

When I read "sexiest" I was expecting to read which minifig you find the most attractive.
I like all of them, even the goalkeeper isn’t entirely terrible. But, the trash monster is the only one I plan to pick up.
Unpopular opinion: the Bionicle doesn't bother me either way,
However, as a Monster Fighters fan.....I'm really excited about this teaser (if teaser it is) + the Trash Monster (incl. new pumpkin head)
8/10 series. Diver and goalkeeper bring it down but are not bad with new pieces and cool recolors..
"This is my second favourite of the series: not only is the figure bright, colourful and finely detailed, but it introduces a new sitting cat mould, which makes a change from all the dogs that the CMF series usually yields." Well, you'd expect a witch's familiar to be well-behaved. I went back and forth on whether I liked the Monster Hunter or the Tahu Cosplayer more, but finally decided on the Hunter, only to see that my two favorites were leading the poll with both of the having more than twice as many votes as the third-place contestant.

There are twelve minifigs in this series. Of those twelve, six are female-coded (marine biologist, monster hunter, boba tea fan, chocolatier, witch, elf), and two of those (monster hunter, chocolatier) aren’t even dressed in stereotypically female colors. Tahu is the Toa of Fire, so he’s literally fire-colored. The trash monster is…you know, trash-colored. La-Loyd is the color of military camouflage. The tuba player is in a marching band, so that uniform could be his school colors, which means everyone at that school wears those colors. The robot is a dinosaur. The dinosaur is a robot. Sure, the eyes are pink, but it’s a carnivore with metal teeth! And the one with the ball is…falling down and pretending to be hurt, so I don’t see how it really matters what color outfit he wears.
But that’s just the current spread. Look back at S1, when they had 16 minifigs per release, and only the nurse and cheerleader were female. It’s taken them a long time to reach a point of gender parity in the CMF line, and even once they did that, a few licensed waves like Muppets and Looney Tunes still had immense trouble even coming close to maintaining a 1:1 ratio. I’ve seen a mother suggest checking out the LEGO section only to have her daughter turn her down cold because they’re “for boys”. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve assisted a parent with a daughter who just wanted any random female CMF. They lost access to two whole generations of girls in the US because they didn’t have good cross-gender appeal. That started changing with the launch of Friends, and gender parity within the CMF theme is just a continuation of the push to appeal to _all_ kids, and not just half of them.
And that’s not even getting into the whole mess of exactly what a “girl’s color” is. A little over a century ago, the western world was pretty much split on whether blue or pink was the best color for boys. Many felt pink was too strong a color for girls. And purple was long reserved for emperors and kings.

What’s the Marine Biologist’s ‘106’ a reference to?
I saw online that it could be ‘10g’, the clown fish’s mass, which is conceivable. I’ve had an alternative idea that may be far fetched and was wondering if there’s a more plausible explanation or even a definitive one provided by LEGO.

Purple is all things at the same time. In college theatre, our lighting designer’s favorite lighting gel was Roscolux Surprise Pink (51?). It was this really light shade of purple that could be a warm highlight for cool lighting, and a cool highlight for warm lighting, with half the number of instruments it would take to do that with two different gels. Purple was the color that nearly took down the Emperor. And technically, Darth Vader’s lightsaber was pink, being red with a white core.

Mysterious Ronin is the most justifiable one for me to get here, as green is my favorite color and the armor is a recolor of one I thought was retired, so that’s pretty cool."
The overall design and concept is very similar to the character Muckman from the Ninja Turtles franchise, as well as Toxie from Toxic Crusaders. The pizza box with green goo (or ooze) also seems like it could fit right in with TMNT.
Oh so the monster hunter girl gets a cloth kama but God forbid Captain Rex wears anything ._.
Pretty good series although very few stand out. Makes me realize how we need a 'con' for all the dressed up minifigs!

Well, the previous series is already a furry convention in the making.

Clownfish abstract ocean melody 106. I don’t know what the heck it means. But maybe somebody at the designers team has used those pictures as inspiration? I don’t know :-/

Initially, I had the fanciful idea that it had to do with the name of element 106 in the periodic table, seaborgium. But now I agree with @M_Jibril : it’s to do with LEGO’s colour numbering. Well spotted!

In season 6 Lloyd wished to be "wise like Wu" and Nadakhan granted this wish, causing Lloyd to become wise but also rapidly age.

"I don't think there needs to be a familiar solid inspiration for everything.
Is the figure canon to existing material?"
That's true, the Monster Hunter looks like an homage to the Monster Fighters theme. (It goes without saying that 31167 is homage as well.) I would like some lore. Ann Lee had red hair, maybe she's a relative of her's?
I'm surprised we didn't get a non-licensed knockoff of "Kpop Demon Hunters" in this series. I suppose Lego is making us wait until the official sets are released out later this year.

LEGO knocking off an active licensing partner would be a very poor move for licensor relations, I'd think. Who would work with a brand trying to profit off an IP without licensing *while* they are also currently licensing it? They only did parallel characters like the Series 2 Witch or Series 6 Genie prior to acquiring the licenses with the characters they echoed.

8827-16 was released in 2012, and was only seen as a knock-off of Robin Williams' character because it was a genie in a shade of blue. Stand them side by side, and they don't look very much alike, same as 8833-9 and Tinkerbell. And while there weren't any Disney sets released in 2012, and the Disney Princess theme wouldn't launch until 2014, it's not like they didn't already have a relationship with Disney. Prince of Persia sets released in 2010, followed by Pirates of the Caribbean in 2011.
Likewise, 8684-4 looks very different from the Wicked Witch of the West, and green-skinned witches are one of the most common tropes of Halloween. Of the three, this is the one that feels closest to being an unlicensed knockoff, but not nearly as close as Johnny Thunder vs Indiana Jones. And they did release IDEA172 in 21344 the same year as the last wave of Indiana Jones sets.

Bright Orange, actually (I remember because it's right next to 107 Bright Bluish Green, and I once considered duplicating the teal house with that address from the Bookshop modular to have an orange one next door).
Rambling Bricks noticed that the Robot Dino shares a logo with 71037-2 - the Robot Warrior.
PS. I don’t recall the hood/hair combo on Lloyd being used before but the scabbard has definitely been used in titanium metallic and gold. Brown might be new, though.

Hmm, weird. 71037-2 has a triangle on the belly, a triangle over a line on the gun, and an inverted triangle under a line on the side of the boot. This one has a triangle on the belly, an inverted triangle on the spine, and an inverted triangle under a line on the side of the leg. So that's actually four different symbols, and each of them uses three of the four.

I wouldn’t mind a triangle-obsessed robot faction in the Space megatheme.

It actually reminds me of the Swamp monster:

While not exactly *attractive* the trash monster with the rotting Jack-o'-lantern head rather appeals to me. I may try for multiples of that one -- the fish skeleton, the fly, that rotten pumpkin... I can find uses for those.
I quite like the goalie's face, and the marine biologist and the fish are a lot of fun. I love the witch's cat more than the witch herself. Wouldn't mind an entire marching band eventually.
Love the chocolatier, particularly that chocolate dragon. My favorite by a mile is that monster hunter. There's someone who can fit into multiple scenarios and vignettes.

Like the flexi tube in the Rocking Plants set. But yellow.
The Evil Mech has the Blacktron logo, the other triangle symbols are not Blacktron logos.

Yeah, but then it’s _three_ triangles that form two more triangles.

It’s been around in black for years - in the 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor Diorama, for example - but I’m very much hoping that it turning up in green for the plants means yellow might be back on the table (and preferably PAB) eventually, at which point I will be festooning any and every even vaguely Blacktron-themed kit with them. At least until my partner notices and makes me remove three quarters of them for Artistic Restraint reasons.

I will accept more triangles and less triangles and different arrangements of triangles for Definitely New And Unique Non-Blacktron Robot Space Faction Honest Guv but not precisely the same number and configuration of triangles as Blacktron.

Okay, it is a new design. There's been three. The version from 1985 had removable ends and no tabs. The version from ten years later added tabs to the ends. And the current version is from 2001 with permanent ends and no tabs. Looks like the last set I've actually built that included them was 21303.

I suppose that means BlackTron is out. Color scheme and logos are remarkably the same, but their Lightcycles leave trans-yellow lightwalls with trans-red trim behind them. Ooh, 40580 has them oriented sideways, like the rain in Scotland!

You can do that with a voodoo ball already, but there’s still nowhere to a minifig to hold it.
