I'll get one of each

Don't think I'll need more than that

Gravatar
By in United States,

Trashman for me, and that's it. Huge let down of a series IMO.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll just go for the tuba player

Other than that maybe the chocolatier and maybe the trash monster for that fishbone

Honestly compared to the last three series, there's actually stuff here that could interest me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I like this line-up very much. The only one I don’t especially care for is the goalkeeper but even he will fit in just fine with my City kits, and the rest are delightful.

ETA: The chocolate dragon is a particularly fantastic accessory. My sf/f lit fandom pals once represented me at a convention set-up with a little sleepy dragon statue on account of my love of dragons so the chocolatier would definitely be a must-have even if I wasn't planning to get the set.

I'm gonna buy a ton of those Tahus.

There’s some really cool ones in here. Love the Robo T. rex, Marine Biologist, and Elf.

By in Australia,

Top ten world sports, by participation, still unrepresented in minifig form (including in 29 series of CMFs):
4. Field Hockey
6. Table Tennis
8. Cricket
10. Golf (and no, 71023-12 doesn't count as that's a movie character caricature minifig.)
Bias against South Asia and South East Asia evident here!

What does “Unicorn Elf” even mean? She has a unicorn horn attached to her necklace… did she kill it? Is she… an elf that kills unicorns? Is Unicorn Girl from season thirteen okay? I need some answers!

Also, the trash monster brings us one step closer to Clayface

There are a few accessories missing from the individual images. The hooligan comes with a soccer ball. The chocolatier comes with a chocolate dragon. The witch comes with a cat. And the elf comes with a little unicorn. You can see the ball, cat, and unicorn in the image at the top, on the front of the case, and on the blind pack. The chocolate dragon is only in the top image and the front of the case, as the chocolatier didn't make the cut for the blind pack.

And the trash monster's only new element is the fish skeleton. The goop helmet was already used in Vidiyo (43108-9) and Dreamzzz (30636-1).

"Mysterious Ronin"

La-Loyd?

I haven't bought any CMFs since the switch to boxes, but a couple of these do pique my interest for once, including middle-aged Lloyd. I like the tuba, and that chocolate dragon is very nice, even though the minifig accompanying it is extremely boring. I don't recognize the mold off the top of my head - has that dragon accessory mold been produced before or is it new?

Nice! Obviously the Bionicle and Ninjago figs are a highlight for me, but there's a lot more to love—the Monster Hunter is cool and steampunk-y, the Marine Biologist has a neat hairpiece and the clownfish is very cute, and the Trash Monster's fish skeleton accessory is EXTREMELY cool—the first full animal skeleton since the horse over a decade ago, and useful for all sorts of settings and scenarios.

By in United Kingdom,

The Unicorn Elf and Trash Monster are my favourites. I’ll add them to my display collection as sold.

I’ll get the Chocolatier for the dragon, and the Cute Witch, Monster Hunter and Ronin for parts/accessories.

Overall, I reckon this series is OK but not super exciting. It’s better than the all-costume series but that’s not saying much.

Definitely want the Robot T. rex (and thank you, Lego, for not calling it "T-Rex"), the Marine Biologist, the Tahu Cosplayer, the Monster Hunter (steampunk!), the Chocolatier (love that dragon!), the Cute Witch (she's adorable) and the Unicorn Elf. I'm going to be ordering a six-pack as soon as these drop, and if it includes a Tuba Player or a Trash Monster, I won't be disappointed, provided that it also includes two or more of the ones I already mentioned.

@Nokturn said:"Gonna need all 6 Toa Mata in minifigure form, ASAP!"

Oh, heck yes, especially Kopaka.

It’s not pictured but she comes with a unicorn fig.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I had never heard of a Boba cup so I had to google it. Then I had to google bubble tea, never heard of that either. Doesn't sound like I'll need either of those in the near future. Cute figure though.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'll get as many marine biologist as I can find in the box, I'll also get the Bionicle cosplayer and the Tuba player(might need a few for a marching band). I might consider the trash monster and the chocolatier. The unicorn elf might also be of interest if only for the golden hair. Three for sure, potentially six. The mysterious Ronin is very Lloyd-y! But is has very nice arm prints. I'll see about that one after the review.

Edit: since I read that the unicorn elf comes with a unicorn, that minifig is rising to the ranks!

Gravatar

I'm a little disappointed the tuba mold wasn't used in the Shopping Street modular.

Dear Lego,
Please make a trombone, french horn, and clarinet mold please.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Kind of weird that the official reveal doesn't have more thorough pictures of the Minifigs and accessories but whatever. Originally I fully planned on picking up Lloyd, but the hood mold sticking out to the side really bothers me, so I don't know. Otherwise, I might pick up Tahu(if he can be found), or the Monster hunter. This series is a pretty decent addition overall though!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I love that trash monster just because of how original it is. Also that monster hunter is just a gender-swapped Van Helsing. She'll fit in perfectly with the Monster Fighters.
The Ninjago minifig is a bit cheap though, we already get so many of them every year. I don't think it needed to take a spot in the CMF line.

She has a unicorn that she is preparing for ritual sacrifice, hopefully the Monster Hunter takes her out before the arcane rite is completed and unleashes the Trash Monster

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Huh, a LEGO gunblade is really surprising.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A rotten-pumpkin minifig head print was also leaked alongside the trash monster--I assume that's the head under his goop mask, then? That keeps him in the horror genre! The fish skeleton feels so beautifully simple yet overdue. Now that we have it, it feels like we should have sooner!

I'm extremely surprised to see these already. Multiple non-licensed CMF series in one year again??? I never thought I'd see the day! And it's early still for that second unlicensed series! Maybe the licensed series will be for the last third of the year then.

Gravatar

Wish the Mysterious Ronin was from classic Ninja and not Ninjago. Enough Lloyds already.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Certainly much better than the Costume series which I can't get rid of.
Why not simply make a whole Ninjago CMF Series instead of this "mysterious Ronin totally not Lloyd figure"? Or is that also just a Cosplayer? The most boring is the goal keeper with the hole in the ball (dumb design) and just wastes a space instead of a cool Castle/Pirate/Space figure. Isn't Editions enough football already? At least it's not an F1 driver...

No kidding. CMFs are a near-lost cause with barcodes. During the unmarked foil packet era, the only figure I never found was Mr. Gold. The earliest foil packets had barcodes and got picked clean, and now the marked boxes get picked clean too. I guess I'm grateful they're not in unmarked boxes anymore; those were hopeless and I just gave up.

I like the tuba player in this series. The two fish are both great accessories. Nothing else attracts my attention. I know this is Series 29 and the ideas have started wearing thin, but I also know we have not yet exhausted the world's supply of iconic uniforms, traditional ethnic garb, historical archetypes, and everyday situations. Dog breeds alone could take them for another 3 series.

Easily one of the best minifigure series in a long time. Surprised to see some people think it’s one of the weakest! I do think a few of the figures are repetitive in their design/concept like the “Marine Biologist” who’s clearly just a scuba diver or the Chocolatier, but they still stand out thanks to their awesome accessories. Lloyd, the BIONICLE guy, Unicorn Elf, and Robot T. rex are my favorites. Really love all the new molds here, they did a great job!

That’s pretty much the best you can hope for. I got it straight from a LEGO employee that whenever there’s been a poll, everyone votes in favor of their favorite Toa (whoever that may be), and votes _against_ every other Toa. Combine that with how abysmal the G2 sales were (being so expensive everyone could only afford one Toa didn’t help), and there’s pretty much no chance of seeing a relaunch.

So... is that Boba Fett's daughter or something?

I have a feeling that the part designer who made the tuba got it looking just like he wanted, and then once production started, he was like, "Oh yeah, I guess I should've made it so that when the minifig holds it, the mouthpiece was at least halfway close to his mouth."

What would they do with it, though? Between the CMFs and the big set, they covered all the main character classes and most of the basic races, didn’t they? Sure, there are plenty of monsters they could put in there as armybuilders, but to release a second wave, they really need more player characters. They’d also need more named NPCs, but that’s less of an issue.

By in United States,

It's so cool finally getting a proper BIONICLE minifigure. They had a few attempts at it at the past, but the 2005 ones were bland one-piece molds and the '07 ones recycled head molds which made some good figs (like Kalmah) and some awful ones (like Pridak.) The '06 ones were pretty solid, having all 12 main characters that year and accurate mask shaping, but even then they can look a little awkward next to a standard minifigure. Honorable mention to the Hero Factory ones, which I felt melded with standard minifures much better.

Another thing I love about it is he actually has his pink eyes! Granted they might be a little *too* pink here, but the original Tahu figure had Trans-Dark Pink eyes. Despite this most depictions of him (both official and fan made) just used a basic red.

But I do have a few gripes. First off is: really? Tahu again? Like I get it, he's basically the main character of the theme, but not only did he have the most action figures in the actual theme, but this is the third Legacy BIONICLE figure in the past 4 years and they've all been Tahu. We know from behind the scenes stuff that basically any BIONICLE Legacy set is going to be based off the first 3 years of the theme, but even still that leaves a lot of iconic characters like Makuta, the Bohrok, or even another Toa like Kopaka on the table that they aren't using.

I'm also not a big fan of the mask. At least, IMO, it feels a bit too detailed. Usually when characters are translated into Minifigures they're chibi-fied a bit. In BIONICLE's case this is very noticeable on the 06-07 figures, but even outside of that things like the OG Stormtrooper and Darth Vader simplified things to make them a bit rounder and cuter. On the other hand the Kanohi Hau is the most iconic mask of the franchise and a piece of its promotional iconography, so I get wanting to get it right, but having molded greebling on his mask and printed on the torso just looks a tad odd

My final gripe is probably the most nit-picky, but we've yet to get a lore-accurate Fire Sword. Granted, if you asked me to design a Minifigure scale Tahu's sword, this is probably what I would've done, but it's still not accurate. In the books Tahu's sword is described as two huge blade-like pieces, already shaped like a flame, that are slotted together. When Tahu picks it up his elemental power is channeled through it, lighting the blade on fire.

The first physical figure of Tahu was close to this. 8534 used one large red piece to depict it. While this allowed for an accurate look at the metal core of the sword, it was obviously impossible to actually light it on fire, and LEGO didn't do dual molding much at the time, but the effect was carried by a lot of the promotional animations at the time where you'd usually see it glow red hot for a fraction of a second before a burning effect engulfed it.

7116 Tahu Stars (Who's supposed to be the same version of the guy) was a bit of a back step. In this set the Sword *is* who pieces, but those two parts are a hilt and a blade. One the one hand I think the hilt is way cooler than the original, being silver and having a proper rounded guard to protect the hand, but the blade was a bit of a downgrade. Instead of a hunk of metal that lights on fire it was a protrusion of fire generated by the blade, similar to a lightsaber or flamethrower (and we know this is the case because the Golden Armor only includes the hilt, no blade.)

Tahu Mata has since been depicted in 11021 and 40581, which like this figure go for the lightsaber route of having a hilt generate a flame. Theoretically a 100% lore-accurate fire sword, combining traits of all versions, would be a rounded silver hilt piece, and then a dual molded flame piece with a solid red core and transparent orange or yellow coating. LEGO has mixed transparent and solid color molding before ( https://brickset.com/minifigs/njo0530/kai-fs-(spinjitzu-slam) ) so it's not out of the question to produce a flame like that, but I also get it would be overkill for a CMF like this.

Tahu officially had trans-fluorescent-red eyes. It’s one of the rarest colors, as it was only used for that specific piece, but under UV light the at thing pops more than TNG or TNO. Only trans-bright-green, GitD, and maybe the new Violent colors can match it.

"On the other hand the Kanohi Hau is the most iconic mask of the franchise and a piece of its promotional iconography, so I get wanting to get it right, but having molded greebling on his mask and printed on the torso just looks a tad odd"

He kinda looks like one of those old Halloween costumes with the molded mask and a shirt and pants that more frequently had graphics of the character represented than trying to accurately recreate the outfit…except for trying to do the latter. Still, this guy is going on every layout I do once I get my hands on a few.

"My final gripe is probably the most nit-picky, but we've yet to get a lore-accurate Fire Sword."

*sigh* Yeah.

More than a few of them do exist though, almost exactly alike, and I gather this very creative guy doesn't work for Lego. That's both great (for us) and not-great (for him) at the same time. He deserves a nice fat check, and they can just produce these designs for the next 20 years. I know I'd be happy with that arrangement.

P.S. The Flickr album is much more digestible than the Eurobricks post:

"Another thing I love about it is he actually has his pink eyes! Granted they might be a little *too* pink here, but the original Tahu figure had Trans-Dark Pink eyes."

Tahu officially had trans-fluorescent-red eyes. It’s one of the rarest colors, as it was only used for that specific piece, but under UV light the at thing pops more than TNG or TNO. Only trans-bright-green, GitD, and maybe the new Violent colors can match it. "

Accidentally discovered that coral bricks glow as brightly as trans green awhile back (we tried out a colour changing light in a room with Vidiyo kits and they lit up like fireworks under purple). We weren’t really expecting any UV effects at all so it was a bit of a shock.

Several of them already existed well before that post was started. I also see a few that would be impossible to fit inside either size of foil packet or the current box (lances twice the height of a minifig, skeletal horse).

@Hiratha:
One year at BW Chicago, one of the vendors had included a combination laser pointer/flashlight/UV light (single LED each) in the goodie bags, so I came back the next year with a 7-LED UV flashlight to use during World of Lights (when they turn the lights out and let builders show off any lights they built into their MOCs). Wasn't powerful enough. So the next year I went back with a 100-LED UV flashlight. You can find all kinds of weird stuff with a powerful UV light. I've got a Jawsome minifig where some of the orange parts glow, but other parts don't. Someone I know has 1x2 red bricks that have a flame pattern under UV light. And yeah, some stuff looks fluorescent (trans-light-blue) but isn't, and other stuff doesn't look fluorescent (trans-medium-blue) but is.

Shining a UV light on a Transformer toy can be interesting because unpaintable plastic (https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Unpaintable_plastic) fluoresces differently from the other plastic of the same color.

Shining a UV light in Peter Quill's bedroom is...a bad idea.

lol. Why May 2? This should be completed by noon on May 1st!"

By in Australia,

What an awesome series!
Will have to buy at least half of them, at some point.

"I'm a little disappointed the tuba mold wasn't used in the Shopping Street modular.

Dear Lego,
Please make a trombone, french horn, and clarinet mold please.

Your favorite Lego loving band director"

A Sousaphone would be fun. Something more in minifig scale than the Fabuland one. But I'll take 8 tubas & 80 figures for a marching band.
