Random figure of the day: col192

Posted by ,

Today's random figure is col192 Piggy Guy, Series 12, a Collectible Minifigures figure that came in one set, 710074 Piggy Guy, released during 2014.

Our members collectively own a total of 33,334 of them. If you'd like to buy one you should find it for sale at Brick Owl or BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $10.10.

I got conned by a seller selling a supposed hol137 and got this.

My brothers have a couple of these guys. Unfortunately, one of them was kept in our LEGO room in a place where direct sunlight hit every day, and the sun-facing half of him turned to... a more realistic shade of pig. Tan, essentially. Flesh-colored, if you must. I didn't know pink pieces could yellow in the sun before then. I thought it was just white and light grey. Apparently, that is not so.

By in Turkey,

I mainly collect Clowns and Aliens when a CMF series is released, no costumes or cosplayers.

The only difference appears to be the torso, and the head. The CMF head is exclusive to that set, while the CTF head is used in 14 other sets and easy enough to get your hands on, so it's really down to the torso. The front print looks identical, so it's easy enough to mix the two up if you don't know that the tail was only printed on the CMF. If you do, it's not that hard to strip the tail print off the torso and try to pass it off as legit...except most people don't know that no CMF torso through HP2 had the contrasting neck patch. That's not something you can really fake, unless you have a pad printer (and even then, there are also distinctive mold differences that can be used to tell the two apart).

So, I'm curious. How unscrupulous was this seller? Did they strip the tail print off? Did they swap the head? Or did they just take a 100% stock CMF Piggy Guy and list him as the CTF version?

Worse than a 100% stock CMF Piggy Guy, they put a random head on it. I wanted hol137 to get the set of minifigure 'year of' to go with the year of GWP, so have learnt my lesson and will ask for photos if I try and get another. I didn't know about the neck patch, or mould differences.

The neck patch is used to allow the assembly machine to tell if a printed torso is facing the correct direction before attaching the arms. If they're facing backwards, the machine has to flip them first, which isn't necessary on an unprinted torso. Except they never printed the neck post on Chinese CMF torsos, and I don't know why.

The most obvious mold difference is that Chinese CMF torsos have a rectangular pit filled with text molded into the inside surface of the arm, while European torsos have the text molded right onto the surface of the arm. Now, I can't see the interior surface of the arm in any of the photos of these two minifigs, but the images of the torso assemblies show the neck patch on the CTF torso, while the CMF torso is solid pink.

This figure, which I have recently bought on Bricklink (and thanks for the heads up about a possible mix-up with hol137, I'll check later that I wasn't conned) because somehow I mistakenly didn't get it at the Store, somehow reminds me of that ungodly deleted scene from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"… (no, I'm not going to post a link to the video, nobody should have to see this…)

Blue plastics can yellow too, making them turn green.

With the exception of black and maybe the sprayed or plated metallics, I think just about any colour can be discoloured by the sun, even yellow. I've got a bunch of classic blue pieces that it's happened to.

By in United States,

Have you seen the little piggies
Crawling in the dirt?
And for all the little piggies
Life is getting worse,
Always having dirt to play around in

Have you seen the bigger piggies
In their starched white shirts?
You will find the bigger piggies
Stirring up the dirt,
Always have clean shirts to play around in

In their styes with all their backing
They don't care what goes on around
In their eyes there's something lacking
What they need's a damn good whacking

Everywhere there's lots of piggies
Living piggy lives
You can see them out for dinner
With their piggy wives
Clutching forks and knives to eat the bacon

- The Beatles' song "Piggies"

It is interesting the holiday one is now more expensive than the CMF. For ages the holiday one was quite cheap as they sold all the parts on online PAB or bricks and pieces as it was called back then.

ABS is UV resistant, but only black (colored with carbon dust) is immune to discoloration.

What about very, very dark gray?

Eventually fades to very dark grey.
