Review: 60489 Jet vs. Car

This review has been written by William, age 12:

This is a review of 60489 Jet vs. Car which includes a supercar and supersonic jet, plus a pilot and a driver minifigure.

Summary

60489 Jet vs. Car, 259 pieces.
£24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 | 9.6p, 11.6c, 11.6c per piece.

This set is fun to play with and looks cool too

  • Plane is solid and strong
  • Nicely detailed minifigures
  • Interiors lack detail
  • Minifigs can't reach controls

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

I started by building the plane because planes are my favourite, so i was excited to see how it turned out.

The plane was easy to build, it took me under 30 minutes to complete. It has three wheels, one jet engine with after burners, two black wings and two horizontal stabilisers which are a nice shade of neon pink. There are also two turquoise vertical stabilisers with a black logo sticker on them that look a bit like an owl.

It is about 20cms long which is a nice length for playing with. It feels solid and strong, making it good fun to fly around and land.

The cockpit has a tinted glass top which when you take off reveals a joystick, chair and a mini figure. The pilot mini figure has a suit which matches the colour of the plane. She has a helmet with a visor. She fits in the plane easily. The joystick is basic but is a good effect. It would be nice if there had been a bit more detail in the cockpit. It is a shame the mini figure can't actually hold the controls.

My favourite feature is that there is a push/pull sliding mechanism that makes the afterburners slide in and out.

The plane looks like a F15 fighter jet. I really enjoyed playing with the jet.

The car was also fun to build. It looks very futuristic, sporty and aerodynamic. It is mainly white and black with green neon wheel rims. It has a cockpit that matches the jet. The cockpit is simple with a steering wheel.

The lights and spoiler at the back of the car are really cool. My favourite feature are the wheels: they sit very close to the wheel arches and make the car low to the ground. The car rolls very smoothly, which makes it fun to play with. It is solid, making it easier to play with.

The set comes with a driver minifigure. The outfit of the minifigure matches the colours of the car. He has a white helmet with a visor. It is a shame that when he is in the car he can not reach the steering wheel.

In summary, I really liked this set. It is fun to play with and looks cool too. It would have been nice if it had a little more detail in the cockpits, but other than that, I had a lot of fun building and playing with this set.

Thanks to William for building the set and providing the words for this review. Look out for his appraisal of 60502 Airport with Airplane in the coming days.

By in Netherlands,

Thank you, William. I very much much enjoyed your review and your insights.

I am however, left with one burning question - in the battle of "Jet vs. Car"... who won?

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Not a very inspired name, but it looks good.

I am curious about the 'vs.' part in the name, though. In what way could a car and a jet compete with each other?

In some silly Top Gear stunt, I imagine...

Great review! I really like how they got the wheel gaps small too looks cool that way. TLG send this guy some more sets to review!

By in United Kingdom,

Think we need William to write more reviews. It was easy to read and to the point, and covered pretty much everything people would want to know.

He'll be after your job next @Huw .

By in Germany,

I thought the title was "KITT vs KARR".

Depends on whether the car is driven by Captain Slow or the Hammster.

The silliest Top Gear stunt…

…in the world!

By in Netherlands,

Nice review! The future of Brickset seems secure!

As for the set, that afterburner feature is quite neat! As for the car, I really like what they did to the sides, simple but very effective. That nose though....looks like they ran out of budget and finished it with as few pieces as possible. And talking about budget....I can't help but feel €30 is stretching it a bit, €25 would have been fine.

By in United States,

Aerial events will sometimes do a "jet vs. car" race to see which can go fastest over a limited distance. Of course a jet is going to win in some kind of cross-country race, but a short distance acceleration race is something different. Anyway, search YouTube for "jet vs. car" to see actual examples.

Funny you should mention it...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NZ9X9A2efA

By in United States,

Thanks for the review William! I really dig that car. Very sleek and detailed despite its size.
Also love the set name. Jet vs. Car may not be much, but it feels far more inspired than a simple "Jet and Car." Lego set names seem so uninteresting these days.

Clarkson, of course.

I like that LEGO is making a unified team colors across sets, we have 3 now and hopefully more to come

Hahaha, that would make it a very retro set then... (from Knight Rider, a TV series from the eighties)

I too get annoyed when minifigures can’t use controls.

Even more, when there aren't any controls.

Some say he floats like a butterfly and STINGs like a bee. All we know is… He’s called “Thr Stig”!

By in United Kingdom,

Sets like this make me really miss the days of alternate builds on the back of the box. You just know it would have had some wacky ideas back in the day.

hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby

(jokes aside though this a well designed set, and a great review)

I was going to say the same thing. It gives a bit of a throughline amidst the endless City vehicles we are getting. It reminds me of the Drome Racers subtheme, which had multiple teams with their signature colors which showed up in all sorts of scales and types of sets (be it mini pullback cars, minifig scale cars and even technic cars and RC cars!). I hope this continues to be fleshed out. I miss the old faction system from the 80s and 90s dearly.

By in United Kingdom,

Nice review, William. I didn't know about some of those features. This is on my 'pick up when I see a good deal' list and I think you've helped me move it closer to the top of that

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I think it might be a falcon as the logo on the pilot.
And a cheetah on the driver making the 'vs' about fastest on land and fastest in the sky.
Just a thought.

Some say he floats like a butterfly and STINGs like a bee. All we know is… He’s called “Thr Stig”!"

Some say he is the Stig, but he isn't. He's the Stig's LEGO cousin!

By in Belgium,

I'm no jet expert but this one looks more like an F-35 than an F-15 to me.

Also the afterburner mechanism is a cool little feature but the small gap in the fuselage looks like it's made for an astromech droid.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

LEGO forgot to put the "Rescue" livery on this peace-jet. ;)

Yes, I'd love to have that one.

Then again, the fig itself is quite easy to rebrick.

By in Poland,

Are all the patterns in the set prints or stickers? The review mentions a sticker, but the Bricklink inventory suggests only printed parts.

The pilot’s logo looks like an eagle head from Chima.

More of an owl, and maybe in a weird way an eagle. Should have been a peregrine falcon of course

The jet will win!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I really dig the car in this set. It's got a sort of TRON/Audi Avus Concept vibe to it.
And the jet follows the color scheme of several cool City sets of the past few years.

Typo! Have been listening quite a bit to Sting lately, though...

By in United States,

I made an account to comment on this review. This looks like a great set for kids and having someone closer to the target age range of the set review it is a great idea. Would love to see more of this in the future when appropriate. (Especially for something like the Smartbrick sets where adults have already made their thoughts on the system known.) Back to the set itself, I like the afterburner feature and the design of the car. Reminds me of a Koenigsegg.

By in United Kingdom,

From the colours, I thought it was a return of Wyldstyle from The LEGO Movie.
