Quick look: 43033 U.S. Soccer National Team Jersey
Posted by Huw,The 2026 World Cup, hosted partly in the USA, is forecast to be the most popular football event in American history, despite fewer than 30% of Americans saying they have an interest in the sport [1].
Among the football-related sets that are being released next month, I suspect that 43033 U.S. Soccer National Team Jersey will have the least appeal globally, and will struggle to sell outside of the USA.
Summary
43033 U.S. Soccer National Team Jersey, 167 pieces.
£19.99 / $24.99 / €24.99 | 12.0p, 15.0c, 15.0c per piece.
Buy at LEGO.com »
Only those with an interest in the US national football team will find anything to like here
- Detailed Minifigures
- Very expensive
- Very limited appeal
- Minifigure's player number prevents assembly of a whole team
The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
The set consists of a framed football shirt flanked by a pair of minifigures, one wearing the team's home kit (red stripes), the other the away kit.
The striped pieces of the shirt are printed, as is the team's logo and the U.S. Soccer tile. The stars are stickers, though, as are the numbers 2 and 6 on the back of the shirt. The sticker sheet contains enough numbers for you to choose any number between 0 and 99 so if you have a favourite player you can apply his number.
Like those in all Editions sets, the minifigures are nicely detailed, with dual-moulded arms, and printed legs and feet. It's unfortunate that the number 26 is emblazoned across both shirts because that prevents the assembly of a whole team.
Although the women's team won't, of course, be competing in this year's World Cup, they are playing in the CONCACAF W championship, seeking qualification for the 2027 women's World Cup. So with that in mind, it's cool that female heads and hair have been provided in the set.
There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the model other than it's so niche that I suspect that LEGO will be able to count on one hand the number that are sold outside of the USA.
Even there, where the 167-piece set will be priced at a whopping $25 when launched next week, I predict it will soon become a shelf-warmer.

Maybe the extortionate prices have been set after discussions with the people who decided to rob fans blind for certain match tickets
"Even there, where the 67-piece set will be priced..."
Missed a 1 there. At least I hope it's a typo and not intentional...
I wonder if this is the first of many shirt sets. Seems a bit odd otherwise.
Why does it show the back of the shirt rather than the front?
I can only assume they’re gambling on World Cup merch completionists.
I do think it’s odd that they haven’t done sets for the Mexican and Canadian teams, since they’re also hosting.
The weakest of all the new football sets, imo.

Probably because the waving flag design on the front would be too hard to replicate and align with the number stickers.
I'm surprised the set didn't come with extra parts stickers to modify it so it could be for either US, Canada or Mexico teams. Would have broaden the appeal since Canada and Mexico are co-hosting the World Cup with the US.

That would have been a good idea.
Whereas the Ronaldo set is 3x better value for money. This isn't a FIFA set, so it's clear it's US Soccer ripping people off.
It might seem expensive, but you could buy three of these sets for less than the price of ONE train ticket from Boston to Foxboro where some games will be played. Tickets on that route normally cost less than the price of this set, but they jacked them up to $80 because they can.
If you think it's expensive now, wait until Infantino suggests "Dynamic Pricing Per Piece".
@Banners said:

As that's the most common way to display actual shirts probably? You usually can't really identify the player from the front of the shirt, name and number are on the back.
Other than that, silly set.
If they wanted the minifig body to be usable for a female player, they'd have needed to release a separate design with four stars above the shield.
Because unlike the US men's team, the US women actually win things.
Well, at least they remembered to provide a football for these minif.....oh, nevermind.
So you can have your favorite player's number on the back of the shirt but it won't match with the minifigures? And why do the minifigures have different faces and hair if they have the same number? Aren't they supposed to be the same player?
Can see this being an utter flop of a set, even in America. As pointed out with both figures having the same shirt numbers, but different faces and hair, clearly whoever approved this set didn't get how Football works.
They’ve spelled “football” wrong!
Exclusive torso and leg printing, 2K arms and legs, 6/10 printed elements... Why is this considered overpriced while much less stuff for Star Wars isn't?

The 26 is because the World Cup takes place in 2026. So in this case no it doesn’t represent a specific player. Having said that, I wish there was a way to get different jersey ’s for the torso

The women used to, but things actually got competitive in the last decade or two. You want utter dominance, go check out the US women’s basketball team.

That’s what I assumed. Baseball is the only sport I know of where the entire team wears the same number (42), and only on Jackie Robinson Day.

Black Sharpie?
I have to say, I don't like any of the new football sets, they look so cheap, I predict some big discounts in the future
LMAO the stars are stickers. Terrible. Wouldn't pick this up for a fiver.

Personally, I wouldn't pick it up if it was free.
Did they only give you 1 'Zero' sticker so you can't spell out '5318008' or 58008?

My old Soccer sets from the late 90s/early 00s can already field teams, and I can actually play a match with my friends, so yeah, this isn't worth it at free.

I can understand that but (to me) it makes little sense to have a minifigure with a number that does not represent the player but a year. Don't see that often in football.

If LEGO was having people standing on street corners, begging people to just take them, I would say no for reasons I'm not going into.

It is a beautiful thing. The most beautiful thing. People have never seen something that beautiful before. During those games, I believe someone will receive a soccer peace prize!

Also makes you wonder: Why only the US team jersey? Okay, I doubt the Canadian jersey would sell any better, but Mexico? I bet a similar set would sell like hotcakes there....
Expensive, boring and next to no audience.
Wow Lego is picking some winners this month.
I mean, I would assume there's limited appeal to all of the country-specific player sets, but I'm not an international football fan, so I can't really speak for them all.
I am disappointed about Lego working with FIFA and other players with objectionable histories. Even if I was into the ultra-patriotic figs here, I probably wouldn't buy the set to support the theme, sorry. :(
What's more popular in the US: Soccer or F1?

Surge pricing on train tickets? How lovely!
I find it quite odd that these are generic yellow figs when everything else in the range is skin tone. I’m sure that was cheaper than including multiple skin tones like the table football set 21337 but I still think they will look awkward displayed with other World Cup sets.
I actually like the highlights sets with their interesting scaling and perspective, but this one is a nope all round from me.

Even more so that despite this, the figure in the away kit still doesn't show any leg skin.....

The other sets' figures represent specific people so it makes sense. Whereas whatever skin tone they used here, someone would complain that LEGO is racist and hates them as they have excluded them from these sets. Especially as internet rage against LEGO seems to be at an all time high. Multiple skin tones is easy when there are many figures in a set but much harder when there are just two.
It’s pretty awful isn’t it. But it has a saving grace.
I actually prefer the sticker sheet to the model. It reminds me of when I was a child, when you got a new blank VHS tape, you would get a sticker sheet like that. We would spell out all the ‘bad’ words and laugh out loud.
Some of the pieces of my earliest models still have those stickers on them.
... I like the way they did the frame. Colors are striking. Having the figs in there also spices it up I guess. And I appreciate the alt head and hair options.
Not much else to say that is positive though

Oh, it gets much worse. I just read that Maryland is set to be the first US state to pass a law banning customer-specific pricing. Apparently major store chains are able to feed their security camera footage through an internet filter that enables them to identify who you are, what your income level is, and how much you're likely to spend on things. Then they can use that information to adjust _your_ pricing in real time, so that two people scanning the same item in adjacent checkout lanes will be ringing up different prices. Michigan _used_ to have a law requiring stores to put price stickers on every individual piece of merchandise that's not sold by bulk pricing, either by weight or volume. That was repealed because it was "too costly", and stores are now only required to put prices on store shelves. I haven't seen them yet, but the theory floated in the article is that stores could eventually digitize the price stickers on store shelves, such that the prices displayed below each product could change based on who happens to have walked up to that specific shelf.

I guess they had a sheet to fill up so they gave extra numbers but decided not to give an extra 0. Really, they only needed 0,1,1,2,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 (assuming the 6 is printed centrally and can be a 9) to cover all the numbers allowed in the World Cup (1 to 23). UEFA and other confederations allow 1 to 99 and this sheet also works for that.

There’s a Culver’s restaurant near where I live that has a reindeer sculpture that doubles as an Advent Calendar. It has two cubes with numbers on all six sides, and using just those twelve numbers it is possible to display every number from 01 to 24, but it took me a while to figure out how they squeeze them all in.

Wow.
You can say what you like about Europe, but reading the above I am glad about our consumer-protection laws.
@AustinPowers:
Michigan does still legally require shelf tags identifying the product and price (and I don’t know if it’s strictly required, but grocery prices always seem to include $/UM, so you know if buying bigger really is a better deal). Short of wiring up every shelf with power to run electronic readouts, there’s no efficient way to do on-the-spot price adjustments, so this may not really apply to brick-and-mortar stores right now. It definitely would to airfare. There are people who practice a trick called something like “skip-lagging”, where they book a flight from A to C, but leave the plane when it stops at B, because A-B prices are higher than A-B-C prices even though you’re only buying a ticket for a portion of the overall flight. Or they use a VPN to purchase the ticket showing they’re located in a different country at the time of purchase, because the same exact ticket is priced higher for one nation than for another (which even EU laws probably don’t cover).
I think I like the female heads/hair + figures the most.
@PurpleDave said: "Short of wiring up every shelf with power to run electronic readouts, there’s no efficient way to do on-the-spot price adjustments, so this may not really apply to brick-and-mortar stores right now"
Many stores here uses electronic labels on the shelves, with E-paper and wireless control they last pretty long between battery charging/replacement. Just the other day I was thinking about how many ways this opens for sneaky price manipulations - rather than identifying customers outright, I was thinking about a system that could see what make and model of cellphone you had, so a customer with the newest iPhone would see higher prices than one with a cheap-o Huawei.
"It definitely would to airfare"
I've heard there's SO much sneaky cross-site tracking when it comes to airline tickets - the prices gets adjusted depending on what other sites you've visited recently and what tabs you have open right now (at least it was so a few years ago, even if they've outlawed some of the tracking there's probably more than enough (legal and technical) loopholes for such things to still happen).
Digital technology is just such a bloody can of worms.
