Quick look: 43013 Kylian Mbappé – Football Highlights

Posted by ,

Frenchman Kylian Mbappé Lottin has had a very successful career since debuting for AS Monaco in the 2010s. He's played for PSG and Real Madrid since, and scored a goal during the final of the 2018 World Cup, helping his national team win the tournament.

Four years later he scored three goals in the final but on that occasion Argentina won on penalties, captained by another subject of LEGO's recently-released football sets, Lionel Messi.

He's another worthy subject, then, of the second of four similar sets that we'll be reviewing: 43013 Kylian Mbappé - Football Highlights.

Summary

43013 Kylian Mbappé – Football Highlights, 490 pieces.
£24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 | 5.1p, 6.1c, 6.1c per piece.
Buy at LEGO.com »

it's well designed and good value for money, making this model a must for Mbappé fans

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.

What's great about these highlights sets is that they capture so much about the player's background and career. He was born in France (French flag 'pitch'), in Paris (Arc de Triomphe in the background), he plays at position 10, and France has won two world cups (two stars on top of the Arc).

Note the use of the new corner cheese slopes on the roofs of the buildings.

The minifigure is kitted out in his national team's attire and, once again, excellent, with dual-moulded arms and legs and printing on every surface that LEGO is currently able to print on.

The subject matter may not interest everyone, and I suspect it'll sell better in France than anywhere else. But, the price of these Highlights sets (£24.99, $29.99, €29.99) for around 500 pieces make them very good value for money, and useful parts packs, so don't overlook it.

By in Spain,

2 years in Real Madrid and not a title. Meanwhile, PSG can win its second Champions League for the second consecutive year. In Spain we begin to think that he is jinx.

Might have to buy the Ronaldo one for my brother. He's such a fan. Also the arm and leg printing will work well with my knockoff Justice League.

Meh!

Is the orange behind him supposed to be dust clouds from running fast?

Apparently these are selling, if only at my target. The section that was labeled for these FIFA sets were completely empty. Nothing left on the shelves. So I guess the target audience does exist, at least where I live.

Flames from running even faster than that, I think.

Brickset users being shocked that people have interest in things they don’t will always be funny to me, not every licensed set is gonna be a hit but this is hardly an obscure subject for a theme and if any players or teams I like were represented I would be all over it

By in Netherlands,

Cool set, but don'r care about the player. They better make a next wave with more legendary football players, like Maradona, Cruijff, (fat) Ronaldo or Macel van der Sloot.

If the minifigure is supposed to be wearing the national jersey, I am surprised that it is missing the national emblem on the front. They've printed it before on other minifigures.

Ah yes. I remember it being one my personal highlights as well, farting a soccer-ball through a window on my tenth birthday. I feel you, Mbappé, whoever you are. Also, happy birthday, I guess?

I don't remember building a commemorative LEGO-set for the event, though. It was good, but it wasn't THAT good.

Won't be buying, I'd never win anything ever again if I did!

With all his money you’d think he would be able to afford a decent haircut.

If only they could shoot fire out of their feet in real life. Soccer would be worth watching then.

I wouldn't have guessed it was Mbappe without being told. Wrong hair style, wrong colour kit, wrong kit design. And what is going on with those boots going over the socks at the front.

The captain armband doesn't look right on short sleeves. It doesn't show so much on long sleeves but on short sleeves it is half on the sleeve and half round the elbow.

By in Belgium,

Inside the build his name is also tiled, and there are certain colour combinations with tiles and triangle tiles that I have no idea what they are referencing

It’s a nice kit. I like the colours.

Which character is it for in the Justice League? They're detailed and pleasant, but I can't think of anyone with either coloration pattern.

Buy this, and watch the rest of your Lego collection fall apart

"[P]rinting on every surface that LEGO is currently able to print on." I don't see hip printing. (What can I say, I'm a nitpicker.)

This is footballer with poor personality but he has quick legs. That's all. I guess set mainly for French kids.
Examples of far better choices of active footballers:
- Kane England
- Kevin De Bruyne Belgium
- Rodri Spain
- Haaland Norway

I don't follow soccer at all (and it's not because I'm American, I don't follow sports at all), so before I read further down your list, I thought the first person listed was someone with the first name of Kane and the last name of England.

I agree, I think these sets look messy and garish. It feels like a bunch of disconnected elements slapped together with no thought at all to what the finished product looks like.

Wanted to be more objective :) also Lewandowski will not play on World Cup, and those sets promote WC.

Haha, You're right. I could use better form:
- Kane from England
- Kevin from De Bruyne
etc :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

One person’s garish and disconnected is another person’s cheerfully colourful and packed with fun references, I suppose.

(I do think the Messi one is a bit messy, but that feels appropriate. Cough.)

I'm pretty sure Kain England was the deuteragonist in the "Legacy of Kain"-series, voiced by Simon Templeman. I'm honestly a bit of a fan. I don't think he was a soccer-man, but I'm fairly certain he still kicked a great amount of ass.

Only one of them looks Messi.

Sets do look nice and full of action but not my thing. I just like watching highlights.

A set based on Madrid's self-proclaimed "fourth-best striker?"
