Random figure of the day: njo0245
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random figure is njo0245 Nya - Skybound, Black Bob Cut Hair, a NINJAGO figure that came in one set, 70592 Salvage M.E.C., released during 2016.
Our members collectively own a total of 2,983 of them. If you'd like to buy one you should find it for sale at Brick Owl or BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $6.60.

The Skybound outfits were some of my favorite Ninjago uniforms.
Hm…not only was Nya not in the scene depicted in that set, but if she had been she would have been wearing the “Honor” robes for Day of the Departed.
Now, if Lego had made a set for her Elemental Dragon, however short its screen time, this figure would have fit right in.

That's how it is with Nya. Either she never gets the same outfit as the boys, she gets the same outfit but looks nothing like the boys, she does get an outfit that visually matches the boys...two years later, or she gets an outfit that's a perfect match at the same time...and everyone keeps trying to replace your eyes with buttons.
Where is her mole? Is there history of her that I am unaware of regarding it? Like originally she didn’t have it but with the reboot she did?

After the events of The Hands of Time (season 7), their explanation was that some things got messed up in the past, and that’s why the ninja looked different in the seasons past that. I believe it was Jay who said “we could look entirely different and not even know it”. I’m fine with the change, except for Zane’s stupid expressions. That face is probably one of my least favorite minifigure faces of all time.
I honestly don't see why Skybound gets hate. It's easily one if my favourite seasons.

Oh, is that the official explanation? I only remember hearing the excuse that "1 year had passed" between Season 7 and Season 8 - because apparently people can just evolve to look completely different in that time. But if the explanation is that "time travel changed things," to be honest, I hate that more. Just like with Episode 19 way back in Season 2, Ninjago's approach to time travel is absolutely terrible and nonsensical.
Along with Zane's awful and unnecessary redesign, I also despise Kai's stupid grin and the bandage permanently affixed to his face. Like, if that cut cannot heal, he should get it looked at. But it does reflect how the writers completely destroyed his character and made him into comic relief.
Very ironic that she seems to have a phoenix as a symbol despite her having the exact opposite element to to the one normally associated with them
I have the Ronin M.E.C. this fig comes in. It's a great set outside of the nerf in arm articulation it and the later Iron Doom received because of the hinge plates and lack of wrists.
As for the figure itself: while I appreciated getting that cool hairpiece, it felt like a throwaway figure. She has nothing to do in the set, the outfit is from the previous season and not only does it lack a mask or bandana, but the head used is on full display. And for whatever reason they used this generic female head with a goofy grin for her at the time. It mostly works when covered by a mask and you just see the eyes, but the head looks nothing like the character otherwise, be it from the show or previous sets. I think it's because at this point they had made three nya heads already (pilot, Samurai X 2012 and Samurai X 2015). But in 2014 they also used a generic female head in 70728 that had a closed mouth and would have been a better likeness.
I'm nitpicking of course, but this figure always bugged me for the head. Couldn't they just reuse a Samurai X head or at leastvthe other generic female head from 2014?

The only Ninjago media I've consumed is the movie, so I can't speak to the quality of the season, but I still kick myself for not getting more of the sets than just 70599 and 70603. There are eleven of the sets from the subtheme on my wanted list; I particularly regret not getting 70605.

I agree with that. Kai is my favorite character, but he seems to be way less mature in the later seasons. I’m currently watching through Dragons Rising season 1 for the first time, and I’m appalled at how childish and immature he’s become. Yes, Wyldfyre is incredibly obnoxious, but he’s older than her! He’s supposed to be a good example to the younger elemental masters!
That's just a generic face, isn't it? Weird that they'd backslide on that.

I guess Nya became a water ninja at some point after I stopped paying attention, but for a moment I was trying to figure out how her thing could be the opposite of rebirth. She dies and stays dead?

That line from Jay is confirmed to be a meta joke.

The only character “destroyed” or turned into comic relief was Jay from seasons 11-15 and Zane (who has only had crumbs of fixing in the latest season), but that started back in 2017 with season 7, so not the “fault” of the new designs (as if that could even make sense)."

@Joshua_Enseiman when was Kai ever mature?
I always hate how sets give you an incomplete version of the ninja. They're getting better at including both mask and hair, but this a noteworthy example since her mask only came in one other set. Which is a shame, because this is an excellent suit design.

Jay has always been the funny Ninja, although the show dunked on him quite a bit (see Season 6). However with the change of studios for Season 11 the show lost all its seriousness, and every character became a dumb comedian, to make Ninjago like all the other bland, stupid, unfunny cartoons of today. The only character that was allowed to retain some semblance of seriousness was Lloyd, because he was the "main Ninja." Granted, Seasons 12-14 did a bit with Jay, Cole, and Nya, but on the whole the characters became stagnant.
The new designs are not the cause of the change, but an indicator. The completely unnecessary copy-and-paste of the TLNM designs into the show highlighted a change in the philosophy of the people producing it. Ninjago's goal was no longer to tell interesting and meaningful stories in the world they built, but to draw in more audiences to keep the line running longer so LEGO could milk the IP. The writing problems this inevitably caused are clear to see; e.g., the Merge.
" @Joshua_Enseiman when was Kai ever mature?"
From the Pilots through Season 7: he started out trying to protect his little sister, to trying to lead the Ninja, to protecting Lloyd (a big plot point in Season 5), to uncovering and coming to terms with the truth of his parents in Season 7. I would say Season 6 is a weak spot for Kai, but then, he kinda wasn't in it much. Perhaps mature is not quite the right word, but, while being a hothead, he was more serious before Season 11 made him a joke (see above). He had several out-of-character moments in Seasons 8-10 as well, but those were less severe.

I gave up following the show after Dragons Rising Season 1 part 1; I've been doing a full series rewatch this year so maybe I'll finally watch the newer stuff. It does feel like a different show, which I suppose was the point of the soft-reboot. Kai indeed is older, but what's funny is that, thinking about it, according to Season 7's timeline, Kai should be nearly 50 years old by this point. He looks good for his age!

I knew that they meant the opposite of fire, but I thought they meant ice until I remembered the water thing. I was like, "Isn't ice Zane's thing?"
