LEGO Speed Champions BMW M3 (E30) official images!

Posted by ,

There will be four new Speed Champions sets released on June 1st and another set, coming on August 1st, has been announced today.

77263 BMW M3 (E30) contains 358 pieces and will cost £22.99, $29.99 or €27.99, with a driver minifigure, as usual. There are aspects of the design I love, such as the use of forks for the BMW's distinctive twin radiator grilles, but I am not sure about the shape of the side windows and the roof.

Additional images are available below...

What do you think of the BMW M3? Let us know in the comments.

It’s hard to tell where the lines are thanks to the active camouflage livery.

But it seems fairly accurate.

By in United States,

Why does every Lego BMW have that confetti race livery? I think it always looks terrible. The design looks pretty accurate to the E30. I think the model would probably look great without the stickers in just white. It's annoying that there's going to be a few substitutions needed for random bricks in the livery colors

By in United States,

I was REALLY looking forward to this, as it’s one of my dream cars.

But unfortunately, I don’t know if they got anything right on this model.

These mudguards (fenders) don’t work AT ALL on this car and immediately strip it of any E30 M3 identity.

The livery is is just too loud and random for such a classic and beautiful car in its stock form.

To me, LEGO, and BMW TOTALLY missed the mark on this one.

Completely.

Official images make it not look good. Hoping it looks better in person. Livery is not doing it favors.

The only E30 or M3 about this thing is the price in the US ($30).

Any why must all BMWs have some kind of racing livery?

Come on TLG!

By in Malta,

For such an iconic and much awaited car, results did not exceed, and barely reached expectations in my opinion.

While the back is fairly ok, the front just looks off, I don't know how to explain it but there is something not right about it.

By in United Kingdom,

Having just seen the actual 40th Anniversary car that this set represents (in BMW's own, much more comprehensive press release), I have some thoughts:
The wheels are way too big, and the tyres far too low profile - not sure if Lego has more appropriate whhels in todays part selection, but the real car has proper 90s BBS alloys, probably 15 or 16 inch diameter at the most.
The roof line is about one plate too low.
The overall shape of the bulged wheel arches (a characteristic feature of the E30 M3) have been replicated pretty well in brick, but the circular arch piece, while necessary to complete the arch cut-out, looks out of place.

I'd have thought a boxy car like the E30 would have lent itself better to reproduction in bricks, but it's harder than it looks, as it seems a little off...

I'll still be buying it though!

Gravatar
By in United States,

At least when you put the stickers on crooked for this one it's not going to really be noticeable. This car is loud... Not really in a good way either.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Sorry, but no.

Whileyou might think the simple, boxy shape of an E30 would be perfect for Lego, the design of the real car works because it actually isn't all that boxy. But all those fine detail gets lost when translated to Lego. And with proportions that also seem off, this reminds me more of a Fiat 131 or, as someone already mentioned, a Lada.

And why this intricate livery? I mean, had it been one of the many quite iconic racing liveries of the M3, that would have made sense. But this just results in a ton of stickers while doing absolutely nothing for making the car more recognizeable.

And while those forks are NPU, it just doesn't look anything like the iconic kidney grille of the BMW's at the time. Headlights also way too big and too close together. As much as I appreciate brick built solutions, a print (or sticker....) would have worked wonders here.

This might just be the worst SC set in the 8-wide era...

Boring rendition of a boring car.... but can't be the first Speed Champion I skip!

Well, you all know Thumper’s Rule, so…it’s nice that they remembered this hairstyle is intended to hang down on one side instead of being a lopsided, slick-back, shaved-sides look that gives the impression you’re wearing a stack of toupees.

Gravatar

This looks AWFUL.

Absolutely unreal how bad this is, and the SC team has been doing great work lately. This would have been perfect in red, with no stickers or decorations, and older tires that have a thicker sidewall.

Because they only license the M Motorsport division of BMW. The only exception was the GS 1200 bike.

I'm curious if they will actually print the hood and roof tiles together or if the tiles will have the usual big misalignment issues that happen because TLG prints parts individually.

Gravatar
By in Jordan,

The livery kind of ruins it in my opinion, which is a shame because I thought that the fact BMW and Lego were collaborating on the livery meant that we'd get one that didn't rely heavily on stickers or prints.

While the model itself isn't perfect, I think it would've looked much better in a single colour.

By in Denmark,

I did definitely not recognize the BMW M3 in this - I was thinking Fiat 131 Abarth Rally, That could be a descent replica

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not particularly interested in the livery. Thankfully it looks like the decorated parts are a mix of stickers and prints on fairly standard elements. Just pick a color, and swap the relevant parts.

As a bonus, the livery patterns of the prints and stickers could definitely find new life decorating something else. The first, simplest idea that comes to mind would be as modern art paintings.

I like it. This era of increasing prices hurts, but I like the set.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

In general, I think that BMW has reasonably good looking car. As mentioned by @Duq this looks like a Lada with mags and a non-soviet coat of paint.

If you had not told me this was a BMW (any model) I could not have said for my life what type of car this is - my best guess would probably have been: Lada. Might as well say this a VW beetle...

For sure it's not for fans of old cars.
Looks messy and chaotic, would be much better in classic clean red.
Driver isn't helping either...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The front looks completely wrong. A rare case when printed headlights either side might have been preferable. Those headlights and the grille being squeezed together remove all of the car's recognisability to me.

Thank you. I was struggling to define what I think of this, or rather how to express what I think of it. I don't like what I see, but why? You nudged my thoughts in the right direction.

I'm not a BMW fan in particular, but I like many cars of this era and I would definitely take a second look if an old M3 passed me on the street. I would have appreciated a SpeedChampions version of one. But this set fails to capture my interest. It tries to modernize the looks with a mod-style that I don't think captures the people who like the base car.

If you like the M3 this is based on, most likely you don't like what they have done to the poor thing. And If you like what they have done, most likely you'd wonder why they used an old M3 as a base for it?

Weird choices were made here.

(And I still very much dislike that windscreen piece. It never looks good when trying to replicate real vehicles.)

It's good that TLG made M3 E30, but it has problems:
- headlights should be smaller, better would be with 1x1 round plate or even like Lego did on 77237
- rims should be smaller, it looks like they are on 235/35R19
- colors? Why isn't it like the prototype:

I think the car shape is quite good. It is boxy, sure, but the source car is also quite boxy.

It seems to have some fairly decent building techniques. But after having built 77237, I don't think this one will impress me. The colour scheme and stickers are just way off for me. Couldn't it have been plain orange, for example?

Well it feels like Lego is trying too hard with diversity. And female with pink hair isn't average driver of such car. Doesn't mean I have anything against women OR female minifigs. Main atention should focus on car.
Exaggerated example: If Lego will make Vatican set and pope will female (to be so progressive and modern) will be similar annoying for me :)

The comparison with that Dodge is an interesting oner though.....also double round headlights, but those are four studs apart instead of two (and not round tiles). Which would also have been perfect for the BMW. I mean, unlike modern BMWs, on the E30 there is quite a bit of grille between the headlights and kidneys. Which is completely absent on the Lego set. Though obviously ihad they opted for a similar solution here , they would have had to upscale the entire car.

You might just need to give it some time. What's the gender ratio look like for the life of the theme? CMF started out with _two_ females per 16 minifig wave back in 2010, but over the next ten years they reached gender parity in S20. Speed Champions is a theme that was originally geared towards fathers and sons building together, so 2:1 might be quite the advancement considering the long history of belief that putting female minifigs in sets targeted at boys would lead to lower sales (a stereotype that was probably artificially reinforced by the tendency to limit the lone female minifig of a subtheme to the largest, most expensive set that was priced higher than most parents could reasonably afford).

With product themes, you have to be able to tell the difference between a theme that the public just loses interest in, and changes to that theme that cause buyers to skip some sets in favor of others. Making dramatic changes probably makes it difficult to tell when the change impacts sales vs buyers just moving on to different interests. Doing it gradually can make it easier to tell when you've pushed too far without completely tanking the theme outright. After all, achieving gender parity is pretty meaningless if it directly results in the theme becoming unprofitable. All that's going to accomplish is getting the theme cancelled, and perpetuating the belief that female minifigs kill sales.

They don't, and in fact I've had times when I was going through CMF packets and a mother came up with her daughter, who desperately wanted _a_ female minifig (and I would always volunteer to help them out). But the CMF line has had several major shakeups, the biggest of which were a 50% price hike, a 33% price hike, and a 25% price hike as they shifted from $1.99 to $4.99 per minifig. They also introduced waves based on licensed IP, they did entire waves based on a single theme, and they even did an entire wave that didn't include a single minifig. They shifted production from being exclusively Chinese to sourcing parts from multiple continents. They removed scannable barcodes, introduced dot codes, messed with the dot codes, changed packet size, then switched to boxes, and quickly realized that they had to once again provide scannable codes that would allow people to identify the contents without ripping them open in the store. They played around with different cases sizes and formats, they shifted from a 3/4/5 rarity scheme to 2/4/6 to flat rarity. They pulled the Mr. Gold stunt, did a less impactful version with the vintage Policeman, and pretended to do it a third time with the Highwayman. All of these changes could have individually killed the CMF theme, and if you had three major changes that all hit at the same time, blame could be assigned to any or all of those changes. Gradually shifting towards gender parity is the only way to make it clear that female characters aren't responsible for any major shifts in purchasing, and that's the only way they're ever going to reach a point where there's no question that future themes can be launched with flat rarity and still be successful.

This is correct.

The historical ratio of male:female for Lego is extremely poor in relation to reality. So to make up for it, they should run years of sets with all female minifigs. Just to balance it out, because the world is functionally halfsies when it comes to that ratio.

People who whine about minifigs, just swap it out! They are the easiest things to come by these days! You can make your own on PAB, or BL, or out of what is likely a large collection in your own house! But if you can't get the parts because they've never made them, well, out of luck. I'm all for this kind of hair in fun colors because mine looks like that. I got some of the hair from the Dark Horse Mustang for that purpose.

I've been building, without a Dark Ages, since before the articulated minifig was introduced. In that time, I've seen whole subthemes with only a single instance of a female minifig, and others with none at all. I've seen girl-targeted themes outright fail, and I've sat through a keynote speech from one of the set designers who worked on all of those themes. Before TRU went belly up, I witnessed a mother ask her daughter if she wanted to look at the LEGO section, only to be told in response that, "Those are for boys." I realized at one point that every female member of my LUG was older than I am, and that somehow two entire generations (including my own) had passed in the US with the customer base being almost exclusively male.

But I've also seen success. I may despise the minidolls, but Friends has seen tremendous success, which is a first for a girl-targeted theme in the entire history of this company. We have a member in my LUG who just finished her first year in college, and absolutely adores the Elves theme. Disney Princess is also a huge success. For several years now, I've been paying attention to the gender ratio in the CMF theme as it approached, and eventually achieved parity. Mostly. Some licensed waves just didn't work out in that regard (there are very few named females in Looney Tunes or the Muppets), but they at least made the effort.

I've probably done more public displays than anyone who comments on this site (I don't have an exact number, but it has to be over 200 by now). I see young girls get as excited about our displays as the boys do. We are long past the point where a lack of female characters will cause girls to turn their back on LEGO sets entirely. They may gravitate to specific themes, but all the minidoll themes are just as guilty of gender disparity as Speed Champions (even if Friends has started shifting towards the center). Ultimately, it doesn't matter which themes they prefer, as long as they can find something they like.

I carry that same philosophy into doing public displays. We had a display at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra several years ago, and during Intermission, there was a young woman (late teens/early 20's) who was intently looking over our display without really reacting to anything. Then when she spotted the T.A.R.D.I.S., she excitedly exclaimed, "Doctor Who!" That's the moment I realized it doesn't matter if someone likes everything on our display, as long as everyone can find something they like.

So, Speed Champions is moving towards parity, but it's not there yet. For those who care, the theme is at least not devoid of female minifigs. And for those who care, it's not happening so suddenly that they'll abandon the theme and cause it to fail.

If you look at the A and C pillars, and the front and back rooflines, the color crosses three corners and goes right to the edge on the roof and bottom of the pillars. None of that is standard with prints. Also, in the image from the box front, you can see a sort of dual-layering effect on the C pillars, which looks very much like clear plastic over black.

By in United Kingdom,

I was excited when reading ’E30 M3’, but then looked at the images. I’m not sure a *restomod* E30 M3 was on any bingo cards…

For whatever reason, LEGO/BMW appear to have opted to make this 40th celebration a modern day restomod/drift car. vibe The vastly over-wide track, huge modern wheels and non-period livery all give that impression.

The MUDGUARD 2X4X2 bricks (part of that over-width issue) also mask the classic swollen wings/arches lines of the original car… they’re brick built here but then their look lost..

TL;DR it’s not just the front that’s awkward.

Well after some of the comments above I think its time for a song ;-)

Ridin' along in my automobile
My baby beside me at the wheel
I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile
My curiosity runnin' wild
Cruisin' and playin' the radio
With no particular place to go

Ridin' along in my automobile
I's anxious to tell her the way I feel
So I told her softly and sincere
And she leaned and whispered in my ear
Cuddlin' more and drivin' slow
With no particular place to go

No particular place to go
So we parked way out on the kokomo
The night was young and the moon was bold
So we both decided to take a stroll
Can you imagine the way I felt?
I couldn’t unfasten her safety belt

Ridin’ along in my calaboose
Still tryin’ to get her belt aloose
All the way home I held a grudge
For the safety belt wouldn’t budge
Cruisin' and playin' the radio
With no particular place to go

How about this?

Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh, Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You done started doing the things you used to do
As I was motivatin' over the hill
I saw Maybellene in a Coupé de Ville
A Cadillac a-rollin on the open road
Nothin' will outrun my V-8 Ford
The Cadillac doin' 'bout 95
She bumper to bumper, rollin' side by side
Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh, Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You done started back doin' the things you used to do
The Cadillac pulled up at 104
The Ford got hot and wouldn't do no more
It done got cloudy and started to rain
I tooted my horn for the passin' lane
The rain water blowin' all under my hood
I knew that wasn't doin' my motor good
Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh, Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You done started back doin' the things you used to do
Oh, Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh, Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You done started back doin' the things you used to do
The motor cooled down, the heat went down
And that's when I heard that highway sound
Cadillac sittin' like toad on a lake
A 110, a half mile ahead
The Cadillac lookin' like it's sittin' still
And I caught Maybellene at the top of the hill
Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh, Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You done started back doin' the things you used to do

(Yes, I know that this is niether a Coupé de Ville nor a V8 Ford, but I'm not going to pass up the chance to post the lyrics to a Chuck Berry song!)

It would probably have been better if they used a single fork in the centre of the grille, rather than two forks. That would look more like the actual grille of the car.

By in Germany,

I have driven a BMW 3 Series for over two decades, E46 though. But the E30, especially the M3, was one of my favourite cars during my childhood. And I have scale models of several kinds (Scalextric DTM version, several H0 model railroad versions from Herpa including street legal M3 and DTM version, as well as an 1 in 18 version by Ottomobile).
This one imho looks really bad. Particularly the new fantasy livery. I know it was done in conjunction with BMW, but why not use one of the classic DTM liveries? Or the classic version in red, white or black?

I appreciate the effort — truly, no sarcasm, for if nothing else it’s useful information to have in the thread, and also if I didn’t know it you explained it well — but I can’t help but remember that the nine year old girls of today won’t be nine for long. Patience means they’ll miss out, and — more to my original purpose in posting — I prefer to ensure that Lego won’t get an impression of some sort of anti-diversity community consensus lest that patience be stretched ever further to the disappointment of future nine year old girls."

Yes, that is exactly what fandoms are supposed to be for.

This virtual community is a bunch of adults from different countries discussing plastic toy cars. Being a LEGO fan is not an exclusive club with a high entry barrier. Every fan should be able to find Lego figures that look like them.

It hasn't been IP-locked in the past, so I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be, short of the set being cancelled before the delay period has concluded. Should be available by Fall. Probably. They haven't been that great about adding new elements of late.

By in Belgium,

Ough, this is badly translated into a Lego E30 M3 and the livery definitely doesn’t help either. Calling the E30 M3 “blocky” doesn’t mean the car is fully angular. It actually has a lot of subtle curves, especially around the front fenders, hood, and nose. Even the widened arches are more sculpted than sharp. That mix of straight lines and smooth curves is what makes the E30 M3 so iconic. Honestly, this probably would’ve worked much better in a larger 1:16 Icons scale. A bit of a missed opportunity if you ask me.

Actually looking forward to getting this as a great example of how not to make a Speed Champion!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is the worst possible livery choice for this car. Beyond looking bad, it doesn't call back to BMW's history at all. They easily could've done the classic white with three stripes livery, but considering how every other BMW set has a similar color scheme, I can only imagine BMW Corporate is mandating these terrible liveries. I hope TLG/BMW realizes that, and doesn't simply assume people don't want BMWs at all.
