Today's random set is 10248 Ferrari F40, released during 2015. It's one of 4 Creator Expert sets produced that year. It contains 1158 pieces, and its retail price was US$99.99 / £74.99, which equates to about US$133 / £101 in today's money.

It's owned by 10,936 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at Brick Owl, BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $297.80, or eBay.

Interesting. My guess is there's some kind of complex build that needs those 1x4 plates in green for spacing, and then they're removed once the subassembly is built. It's a rare technique but ever now and then you have to remove parts as part of the building process.

EDIT: Just checked the instructions, and they are used to keep the rear of the vehicle from snapping off as you build on top of it. There is a plate tall gap between those inverted 2x3 slopes and the rest of the vehicle. Only when the wheels are added are the plates finally removed.

This set has aged amazingly, still holds up to the icons cars of recent.

THIS THING, MY GOODNESS

remember way back in the day, I really wanted this thing
but since then I have very much fallen in love with cars, which furthermore bums me out that I never go this

but yeah car fact I guess. this was the last car approved by enzo ferrari himself!

By in United States,

This is one of my white, er, red whales. Like @Maxbricks14 says, this model still looks almost as fresh and new as the day it was released, even when set alongside newer builds of similar cars like the Icons Countach. The car itself still looks fresh and new, too. The big front and rear clamshells are features that haven't been replicated in other Icons cars until now, really: the upcoming Jaguar E Type also has a big front clamshell.

By in United States,

Completely regret not buying this. Saw it up close in the case at a LEGO store.
Was upset that we didn't have the Countach. Fastforward and I could've had both...

Ah, the criminally ugly mullet of Ferraris. At least it was good for decent fake Mimic eyes. What’s that? It’s the wrong F40? Part it out and burn the box and instructions.

RIP old trans brown.

One of the first sets I bought on rediscovering Lego (after the Mini 10242 and Tower Bridge 10214)... hadn't even heard of Mike Psiaki at that stage!... Really must get around to opening the box!

Always love for Speed Champions! Some of the coolest building techniques anywhere, they look fantastic, and they don't break the bank.

Because its a great choice for a Lego built car, lots of straight lines and inherent boxiness.

10262 shows how subtle curves are super tough and the end result is very awkward

I didn’t get this car when it was available and eventually decided to look at eBay after the fact and found it for 50% off. Those were the good ol days

By in Turkey,

I'm not reallly a fan of F40 but I appreciate the historic value of it. Both in real life and as a Lego set.

Comment was eaten :(

Anyway, I mainly remember this from the window tailor-made to the set (it was later used in a regular Creator set).

Yes once, in 31070-1 , without the red stripes.
Great piece for building cars in that scale but given that it has hardly been used in official sets, it is rather expensive on Bricklink. I ended up buying several copies of 31070 instead. For just a few Euros more you get an additional 600 some bricks :)

EDIT: as others have said. This is a great set that still looks fantastic to this day.

By in Norway,

This set is a precursor to today's icon sets, and perhaps even the Speed Champions. Amazing build.

What I like the most is how the engine is built outside of the car, and then inserted into the chassis.

So I'll be big dork and reply to my own comment calling out that I completely confused this for 76934. Sigh...

By in Netherlands,

Regrets.....this was when I was still kinda slowly coming out of my dark ages, and I didn't get this one. And now I wish I had....this one and the Caterham....

Still one of the best big scale cars Lego has done. Decently accurate yet enough classic Legoness to overlook some minor stuff. Well, except for those blue pins at the headlights...

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This is the set that pulled me out of my dark ages! I was so subconsciously traumatized by the STAMPs and stickers made of flaking material in the past that I didn't apply the stickers until my second or third rebuild. Like others said; still holds up wonderfully!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

It sure is a car.

Another box that I've yet to open...
Maybe the E-Type isn't quite so urgent!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The windscreen without the red stripes also comes in 31070, but don't remember seeing it anywhere else? There are also plenty of curved red slopes if you want to try out your own mocs.

By in Germany,

My second favorite Ferrari of all time, just behind the 288 GTO.
So happy to have this on display next to the Mini and the Beetle. I've even got a second MISB copy I bought because I intended to MOC a Testarossa. So far unfortunately I haven't gotten round to trying it yet.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Totally love how the temporary 1x4 plates are displayed so proudly on the official images. That surely won over anyone who was on the fence about buying it.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This set i bought for my dad's 70's birthday. It was his first legoset ever and since he loves Ferrari and the F40 in perticular it was a great present for him!
I myself had to build it as well of course. That time it was an awesome building experience and even today some of the techniques hold up with todays standarts. It looks decent, even nowadays!

Given how many Ferraris we've gotten from Speed Champions (including two versions of this very car), I'm a bit surprised that we haven't gotten an SC Testarossa yet. I'm sure one will show up eventually, though.

You gan never have enough green 1x4 plates.

By in United Kingdom,

After missing out on 8169 Lamborghini Gallardo in 2009 (just before my Dark Age ended) I was determined to get this (5 years after I rediscovered the hobby). Still have it displayed next to some of my SC Ferraris (including the same car, shrunk down). Love it. There's a Rebrickable model which adds a bit of length to make the proportions more accurate, which I intended to do eventually, but like others have said - it holds up against more recent large car builds very well just as is.

Still never got the Gallardo, but the Countach has mollified me greatly.

By in United Kingdom,

This is the set which brought me back to LEGO. I simply couldn't resist after reading this wonderful quote in the review at The Verge...

"For people of a certain age and a certain bent, the F40 is basically God"

So, so true – and a great set too!

What do you mean? I'd buy some green 1x4s if they come with some Ferrari model. I just feel that the Ferrari increased the price a bit

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Seeing this set reminds of the great comparison they did on Top Gear between the F40 and the Porsche 959.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My son got this for his seventh birthday in early 2015.

That same son, now eighteen, passed his UK driving test first time only yesterday.

He will have to whistle for an actual F40.

75890, 76934, or both?

Say it ain't so. LEGO trying to do a design that was called the most beautiful car by Enzo Ferrari himself. Probably going to look like a British Racing Green Aston convertible. Not as beautiful as the original. They should do a Panda or the new electric Renault 5.

This set isn't Speed Champions. This was Creator Expert and was $100.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think this was very reasonably priced ($100 when it was released is equal to $140 today when adjusting for inflation).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great set. If it had printed pieces and no stickers, it'd be perfect. Very glad I bought it when it was released.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The big brother to my 8671 which was less than half the price. Both great sets.

It's truly worth picking up on the aftermarket. I picked it up six years ago or so, sealed in box at not too horrendous of a premium, and to this day I can't bring myself to deconstruct it -- it just looks too good.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This may be my favorite Lego Icons car, even all these years later. (Although the Mini Cooper and the 911 come close.) While I knew those green plates were used as part of the building process, it still strikes me as funny to see them featured so prominently on official images.
