Random figure of the day: sp085
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random figure is sp085 Space Skull, a Space figure that came in one set, 10192 Space Skulls, released during 2008.
Our members collectively own a total of 3,116 of them. If you'd like to buy one you should find it for sale at Brick Owl or BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $6.00.

Are people still doing 3vil MOCs?
I remember seeing this set on LEGO's website and being very confused by it, though always thought these Skeleton figures were super cool!

Still have these guys in pretty good condition. What a wonderful set. Mark and Chris did a great job on their respective sets, given the limited palette they had to work with.

These were their debranded cousins. Chris Giddens and Mark Sandlin designed LEGO Factory sets that actually got retail release. They apparently wanted to use their personal factions (3vil and whatever the other one was), but they probably would have had to give up ownership of the names. So they called them Star Justice and Space Skulls instead. I got the latter in a scratch and dent sale at Brickworld Chicago, and raided it for parts.
Of all the sets, this sure is one of them.
Hey, who turned out the lights?
Their golden leader was named "Skull Bob" by the LDD community, who made many digital Star Justice and Space Skulls MOCs, before TLG heartlessly committed genocide of the LDD gallery. There's a serious argument to be made that was the worst thing LEGO has ever done.

Excellent reference! Also, cool set as well. I remember wanting it back then.

Can't believe I didn't think to make that reference.
That’s one Spooky Space Kook!
When was the last time we got a minifig in a set that had both unprinted torso and legs? Can’t remember anything recent

My guess is the ghost in the last Creator haunted mansion
The closest thing to Lego Skeletor
when are we getting BDP projects that do fun unique stuff like this set instead of medieval building number 432434252
Man they look weird without the little sticker on their torso giving them detail. Still fits with their aesthetic, mind, but a completely blank torso is throwing me
I've mentioned before how much I adore this set, right? In terms of an army of cool villains to attack your Lego city, the space skulls set was one of the best villainous-themed sets that Lego ever put out. A big call, but I stand by it.
I had the head and the outfit, so...
Wow, from a set I had no idea existed and certainly could not have predicted would exist.

It has happened a few times with the CMF theme, but the most recent one I know off the top of my head is 8684, where they only got away with it because the poncho covers the entire torso, and it was early days when they probably had a smaller budget to work with. Also, this one isn’t technically undecorated. Both sets include stickers for the torsos because the LEGO Factory program didn’t allow for custom prints.
Oh! There is one obvious group that don’t include body prints, and that’s any true monofig, and many near monofigs (where the only disqualifying criteria is having something like hands or hips in the wrong color). Going by that criteria, 40516 (soon to retire) may have the largest concentration in the entire history of the company, but I think maybe a new monofig just released sometime in the past year.

I completely forgot about 40516 ! Good that you mentioned that it’s going to retire, I should finally get it
This must be Stig's evil cursed cousin from the Duat.
Fun fact: This was one of the last sets to feature stickered minifig torsos!

Some say that his brain was pulled through his nose with a hook.
And that his Book of the Dead isn’t to protect him from the Duat, but the Duat from him.
All we know is he’s called Eht Gits!
I really wish I had picked this up years ago. Super cool set.
The set was cool but what put me off back then was the sheer amount of repeated parts to make up large surfaces (mainly those trans red ship 'eyes'). I kind of regret not getting it because it's awesome!
The set this guy's in was a set was from the Factory line btw, which was a cool early attempt at lego to make a service that can let you buy your digital design as a set. There were a few sets that were designed by AFOLs of the time that became released as more regular sets (I do believe mostly from Lego.com though). Of those, the Space Skulls and Star Justice were a pair that were meant to go against each other. As stated above, the Space Skulls in particular were basically Mark Sandlin's 3vil faction. He was the fan designer here. For Space Justice as well, if this bricklist is correct:
https://brickset.com/sets/list-85
Sandlin is also known for his Fleebnork. Basically a trans neon orange or trans neon green scorpion with a matching 2x2 dish on it. I recall correctly, PurpleDave mentioned before that those were bought out on Bricklink for selling them as Fleebnorks.
Specifically about this minifig... Bricklink lists them without the sticker as the 'regular' listing with versions with torso stickers as counterparts. sp085sa and sp085sb are the ones with stickers (the first one is a commander).
This doesn't look anything like the Catrina submission sent to Ideas.

Mark’s stance was that only TNG were Fleebnorks. Other people came up with the idea that TNO also worked, probably because it was so hard to get your hands on the TNG scorpion unless you bought a pricy Fleebnork containment chamber from Mark. I lucked out, and he was apparently so distracted by 3vil MOCs at the time, that I was able to snatch up a massive listing (I think 96?). And I did this:

I do actually have a solid 8w radar dish in TNG, but I can’t remember if I’ve swapped it yet.

A small but important correction (to that specific BrickList):
Set 10191 Star Justice was designed by Chris Giddens (and set 10192 Space Skulls was indeed designed by Mark Sandlin.)
How do I know for certain? Well, in a period not long before their Factory sets came out, I've had a personal conversation with Mark Sandlin via email about Chris' and Mark's Lego creations, their inspiration and Lego Space in general.
And the link to this old The Brothers Brick interview confirms it as you can read more about the idea behind these Factory Space sets and their Space factions 3vil and PCS (pre-Classic Space):
https://www.brothers-brick.com/2008/03/10/brothers-brickcom-interviews-chris-giddens-and-mark-sandlin/
BTW, you are right about the Fleebnorks; it reminds me when I tried to get those little buggers -and the 2 x 2 radar dishes- in every colour that LEGO has ever released them in! Good times!

the Ikea sets with figs had unprinted torsos and legs. That was my most recent one like that.
I never got this set but I kept my eye on it because it has the lowest new price of any old set, being well below MSRP for a long time. Even now brickset lists it as about $103, which is terribly under inflation.

I was going to say that if you count CMFs as sets, it’s a CMF but @PurpleDave ninja’ed me. Specifically, it’s 71052-5 Boba Cup Fan which was officially released 1 May this year, so not long ago.

Actually, this IS the first Stig (remember, just like the MIB, he also dressed in black) - after Top Gear dispensed with him.

I remembered that _some_ CMFs don’t have body print, but only one specific instance…because he was the first instance. I forgot about the Boba Fan. Haven’t bought one, though. Currently, all I have from S29 is one Rexbot, three Not La-Loyd, two Tuba Players, one Muckman, 15 Tahu, five Finding Nemo Battle Packs, and 14 White Jump Stud Battle Packs. I’m not a fan of tapioca, so no point in shelling out $5 for someone who likes it a little too much.
