LEGO 4000048 Bugatti Type 35 images - limited to 250 sets

The LEGO House occasionally hosts events only tangentially related to the LEGO Group, such as the International Bugatti Meeting that took place in June.
An exclusive set was designed for the event and distributed to attendees: 4000048 Bugatti Type 35. Only 250 copies have been produced, which is a great shame because I think the model looks fantastic! The wheels appear to be 3D-printed and a few printed elements are seemingly included as well.
I am normally quite accepting of highly exclusive products like this one, only created for LEGO employees or special events, as the vast majority of those would not realistically perform well as retail sets. However, I find this one quite annoying, as there have been very few sets based on racing cars of this era and I believe this set would have been popular. Perhaps we can have a Speed Champions version at some point.

Fantastic looking, too bad only a few get it.
The rims are not only 3D-printed, but SLA printed and dyed like the WV train and duck. Also the Model T tyres recolored to black.
Looks lovely. Would definitely been a customer. Come on Lego.. play nicely and share!
How much will this sell for in the secondary market? $10,000+?

I hope these actually get assembled and not just stored away in their sealed boxes.

Yup, this would 100% have been a set I'd buy.
Maybe one will show up for cheap at my local Lego shop.......a man can dream....

When I saw the picture my heart accelerated: hell yeah, this looks amazing and I want it next to my Creator Expert/Icons cars.
Then I saw the exclusivity of it and now I am depressed. :(
Love the realism of how it is actually unattainable for normal people like real Bugattis, nice touch!
I’m completely fine with sets being exclusives. There are enough sets available for the rest of us. I like to see the brick built NY I love Yoda in the background of Ryan’s videos and I’m happy he got the set. I’m not envious whatsoever.
I would absolutely have been interested in getting this. Congratulations to the lucky attendees.
That being said, I don’t mind special / exclusive sets like this as it’s nice to have likely unattainable sets on the wishlist to keep me longing / dreaming.
Very nice build, I especially like the Technic mini fake engine inside the System shell. This may sound crazy, but I'm relieved it's a super-exclusive thingumbob that's never going to be sold at retail, because that means I can admire it without feeling any need to add it to my Wanted List. No FOMO for this set!
Edit: Technic fake engine, two-speed gearbox, and drivetrain with differential, all underneath/inside an Icons-quality System body. Why can't other Icons cars get that level of Technic functionality? It's great that steering comes standard in Icons cars since 2020, but if we could get gearboxes and drivetrains too that would be amazing ....
Looks great! Would have liked to have acquired this set had it been destined for a retail release.
Will there be instructions available for this to download? Maybe we can at least try building it in stud.io someday.
Is it safe to swear here? Because when I first heard about the exclusivity of this I wasn't very happy and if this was a retail set I would have pre ordered it
I thought Lego was going to stop doing these types of exclusive sets. Didn't they address that point years ago?
Edit: I guess I was referring to the Chinese seasonal sets when they initially released that were only being sold in China.

We have guests, KFOLs (Kid fans of LEGO), and TFOLs (teen fans of LEGO) here so language should be suitable for all.
As of this printing, Bantha Poodoo is acceptable.
Aside from the wheels (a serious bummer), the crest (not exactly necessary and can be replaced by something close enough) and the windshield (can use a plain one), there does not seem to be any unattainable parts in the set (of course the strapping and the stickers will be hard to get by). The instructions surely/hopefully will be available eventually.
Is it suddenly desirable because we know it can't be had? I'm sure it happened a lot in the past but in this case I believe this model would have done very well as a retail set. If I recall correctly, I believe 21307 did really well back in the days (not quite the same era but still).
I wonder if this means we can expect more 3D printed specialized parts…?
I had an Airfix model of *exactiy* this Bugatti, including paint-job, when I was about 8 years old, so now I’m proper narked that I won’t actually be getting this IRL.
At least it's not a region exclusive, so...

The most crazy thing: While the exact number of Type 35s ever built is unknown, there must have been between 330 and 340. So the Lego version is more exclusive than the real car was.....
(okay, only 148 are known to still exist, but still....)
Not only would I be in for this as a retail set, I would be all in for a series of historic race cars of this era and similar. There is so much character and beautiful design in those cars. I hope this is a trial balloon of sorts because this is absolutely fantastic.
I like LEGO, this might come as a surprise. I also like 3D-printing, this might come as a greater surprise.
I don't much like 3D-printing LEGO-parts, it feels disingenuous to me. And when TLG does that for their official sets... yeah, I need to not be here for a bit. Maybe I need an alcohol-problem.
I guess someone will reverse engineer this?

If LEGO employees must get exclusive sets with exclusive parts, prints, and colors, I just wish the public never got to know about it. I'm salty about the retro-style minifigure pack with the Fright Knights Mrs. Castillo, and the nutcracker would have been an awesome retail set.

I registered too late that this set was for attendees of a specific event, but same thing, really. I'd rather never know these were out there because it's so unfair.
So, my well-written comment disappeared for some reason as I hit post, and now I'm even angrier.
Suffice it to say: this should not have been presented as an official set, or even made at all. Luxury cars are already exclusive enough, it's just infuriating how that exclusivity was placed into such a relatively accessible hobby as LEGO - especially when they do Icons vintage cars and Technic supercars every year, so many people would be interested in this set.
Also, seeing a beloved Star Wars minifig accessory used in a brand new color as... whatever that is on top of the hood... is both a masterpiece of LEGO engineering, and an incredible slap to the face.
The coolest and most unique sets are always limited edition ones.

If you take longer than fifteen minutes to write a comment, it will wipe the comment instead of posting and the comment window timer doesn’t always display accurately if you alt tab at all during the process. I try to either copy mine ready for pasting or save mine in a note off-website if I’m worried about it, because it’s terribly frustrating sometimes if you’ve put a fair bit of effort in and it just vanishes.
I was annoyed when I saw this was a limited edition, because I would have snapped this up, I love these types of cars, but then again there would probably be complaints about the price if was up for general release.

Man, such a small run, that Lego cheaped out on molds and instead chose to 3D print special parts. This sets a very bad precedent for the future.
Why does everything have to be ultra limited and super special, but also at the same time be produced like a bargain bin afterthought.
I know injection molds are super expensive, and this kind of wheel is really hard to mold. But this is just a lazy way to circumvent the challenge. They should've either made the mold, if the set is supposed to be truly special, OR "NPU"-ed their way through it, even if it makes it look a bit wrong (after all it's still Lego and not scale modeling).
This is a bad sign of things to come. Get ready for a ton of ultra limited run sets with super specialized 3D printed parts in the future ....
In essence: I hate the K-shaped economy so much!
This is a beautiful set. 250 is a very low number for production. On the other hand, I hope Lego makes Speed Champion cars from older generation.
Reading these comments from adults crybaby'ing over exclusivity of a set is hilarious and sad at the same time. And then when I think of how this set would received by the same people if it was a normal release: "half the piece count is in the base!", "the price is too high!", "this should be a different car chosen!!", "ugh, wrong colors!" etc....
You people need some serious vacation from the hobby and reevaluate your feelings.
BTW, nice model, and even cooler gift from an exclusive event for a very specific group of people. Good thing this is lego bricks so you can build your own if you like it.
I would strongly consider buying it if it were a retail set...

Incidentally, I have a Matchbox Models of Yesteryear version of this car from the 1980s or so.
There is a MOC out there called "Bugatti in a barn" IIRC where you can build a 4 wide version of this. I did and am happy with it.
Wonder if my SAAB owner's club visits the LEGO house, would they release a SAAB set. Maybe a 900 Turbo. Probably not since the brand is so closely related to modern warfare.

Obviously t's not cost of 250 x 200$ (for example), since it's so limited but still packed and manufactured I guess it's much more for Lego.
Unless there will be this model in different colour in future.

You'd have to 3D-print the wheels though, as those are not regular LEGO-parts at all, and it's unlikely that you'll find them at PAB. At which point you could just 3D-print all of the bricks. At which point you could just print this thing in its entirety, fully constructed. At which point you could just print a better version of the car. At which point you could just print a full-sized, working version of the car. It's true that you would need a very large 3D-printer, but you could just print progressively larger 3D-printers, until you print one that's large enough to print THE ENTIRE WORLD.
I have evaluated my feelings on this, and I've landed on "aggressively indifferent".
Love racing cars of this era, so I'm delighted that this exists, even if I can't have one (much like the actual vintage racers!)
Hopefully the instructions make it out into the world sometime - I'd definitely have a go at putting one together and getting wheels 3D printed to match.
I'd love a series of these - Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza, Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Supercharged to name a couple. Unlikely, but I can dream!
Having met many vintage race-car owners / drivers, including a few Bugatti Type 35 owners, they're overwhelmingly friendly, welcoming and down-to-earth folks, very keen to share their passion and knowledge of the old cars.
Lego could easily sell 30,000 of these off setting the cost of the wheel mold. Come On Lego!
I first saw the picture, and I was immediately, "I might actually want to get this".
Then I read the title.
Man, it's a shame, because it actually looks really good, and it's got perfectly hidden Technic functionalities.
Wonder how much it would cost if it were sold to the general public. 180€? 200€?

While the attendees are getting these for “free” (or rather, included in the price to attend) I’m pretty sure the people organising the event and hiring Lego House are paying for these to be designed and made as part of the service, so I’d be fairly surprised if this set had anything to do with the prices we’re paying for ordinary sets.

And even if that's not the case, for a company releasing hundreds of new sets a year, one more of less wouldn't make any significant difference.
This is one of the best Icons designs in a while, so clean and beautifully detailed. I would absolutely have bought this!
This being such a limited exclusive doesn't really affect me, as even if it were a regular retail set, I wouldn't have the space for it, although if it were and I did, I'd definitely be getting it. But I do feel for the people who would buy it if it were regular retail.

Looks like it's going to be cheaper for me to make the retromod replica of the actual vehicle (from some used parts) than to get this set, which is good in some ways. I agree with Rex though that it's a fantastic and truly iconic car, so it's such a shame it's so exclusive.
This is the type of set I would love to buy, even keep the base, I love it! Older model cars are an area that is sadly lacking in the Lego space.
We have Technic cars, Speed Champions and Icons/Creator Expert cars that all must sell well enough as they keep making them, so give us some older cars!!
This makes me mad as it's a set that they could easily sell and would sell well enough to make more. Create a new sub-theme of Icons cars - Vintage Display collection.
