Still like this helmet-equipment combo over the 'modern' one...which doesn't even look like any firefighters' helmet I've ever seen...:)

Same reason that Bricklink considers https://brickset.com/minifigs/sh0036/iron-man-mark-7-armor-small-helmet-visor-foot-repulsors and https://brickset.com/minifigs/sh0231 to be separate figures.

They don’t know what they are missing. (I am one of those 187 that owns the set.)

I always was fascinated by this headgear design ever since I got 6459 from friends for my birthday that year. The way the middle part with the hoses so seamlessly connects the helmet, visor and air tanks together, you'd think the pieces had all been designed with it in mind; but no, all three other pieces predate it *significantly*, and yet it unifies them almost flawlessly. I thought it was pretty neat!

I also remember playing around to see which of the other hat pieces I owned could also work with the rest of the equipment in place of the fire helmet...

The visor can probably be replaced by the Echo Base Trooper goggles, and maybe the snorkel mask. Airtanks are really the only thing that fits the space under the back of the collar (but capes and several other wearables wouldn’t interfere with it). The angled top is probably similar, with options that will seat on the head but not sit flush on the mask, and many others that are flat out incompatible, but I’m guessing you didn’t find any that really matched the compatibility of the firefighter helmet.
