Tallest LEGO tower record broken

Posted by ,

Over the weekend, a record was broken for the tallest tower ever made out of LEGO bricks.

Standing at 35.16 meters, it was constructed with the help of kids and families attending the LEGO World convention in Jaarbeurs Utrecht, Netherlands. The tower was built using 23 truck loads of bricks.

What a sight!

Wow! Wish would've seen it... ??

It has dozens of steel cables keeping it upright; surely this tower shouldn't qualify for the record.

...and Lego are very good at milking this record: they only go a few centimetres higher every time: "yeah, another record, another press release". But it's at a height now that you probably NEED Lego to provide the amount of bricks, so they can determine how high they want it to go.

It probably sounded awesome when it fell over.

No wonder there will be a LEGO shortage this christmas...

@ rherberg: My thoughts exactly. If we're going to get XL towers like this, we're going to run out of LEGO. Clever, eh?

This sort of thing is getting boring. I agree with DwarfSleepy. If you are going to break the record, build one a good 100m high and then leave it as that. Very few people would try and beat it, and we'd have no more stories about "the highest tower built out of LEGO".

By in Netherlands,

Seen the tower on Saturday.
They had two more days (saturday and sunday) of building time.
Now i understand why they only build such a little bit higher then the other record.
How high could you build a tower out of lego before the lowest lego bricks deform ?
Lego world was a lot of fun.

I agree with the sentiments shared above, about this record being rather pointless when they increase it by mere centimetres every time.
Regardless, I did join in the building of this tower too, together with my son. Just a little fun activity while we were walking around the Lego World CON last week. :-)

Why do sprinters only break the 100m record by a few millionths of a second each time? Why don't they just knock 5 seconds off the record and then we can stop having these news stories all the time?

All the time? For the record (no pun intended), this is the first article of its kind on Brickset.

But I understand if you guys don't want to see these types of articles. Just thought it was interesting, is all...

The criticism wasn't levelled at you, just the fact that LEGO milks this record at every available opportunity by allowing it to be broken by just a few cm every time, thus ensuring regular news coverage every time it's attempted and broken

However, I guess whatever the record people will still try and break it so it makes some sense to restrict its growth.

I'm wondering if volunteers get goodies or some kind of reward?

And that's the best pic Lego could find ?

It's a bit of a Sergey Bubka story alright...

Don't forget that Lego is a toy. Just imagine how many children had fun participating in a world record attempt. The wonder and excitement the kids would have felt is a great thing. This is just one of the things that TLG do to go above and beyond (no pun intended).
