Review: Mixels Series 8 Medix
Posted by TheBrickPal,
It's time to meet the Medix!
These three doctor Mixels are here to make sure that every patient who checks into Mixopolis General Hospital is as healthy as can be. I have been the most excited for this tribe out of Series 8's lineup ever since first images emerged, and the trio does not disappoint. You'll have to find out why after the break.
Don't worry, this won't hurt a bit - no, seriously, it won't! Just sit back, read on and enjoy...
41569 Surgeo
The first of the tribe we are focusing on today is Surgeo! Surgeo is a treat and perhaps one of my favorite Mixels of the wave, and second favorite of the Medix themselves.
As evidenced by his name, Surgeo is a surgeon; in case that huge syringe wasn't enough of a hint! It looks rather realistic with that trans-lime green 2x2 cylindrical brick for the medicine, doesn't it?
Surgeo is known to be quite the serious surgeon and to prove it, he has some a pair of grey horns... or are they eyebrows? Whatever they are, you do not want to anger him. The banana piece was used in the exact same color for a similar purpose in 41546 Forx last year.
And the best part is that the entire top jaw, on a ball-joint, can be rotated upside down - allowing Surgeo's horns to go under his eyes and transform into a moustache! Ingenious.
To top it all off, Surgeo works as a living cabinet that can hide away a sort of tool for operations that is included! He also has a stereotypical forehead reflector. Finally, at six pieces, he has the most aqua of all the Medix! What may also be of interest are the circular trans-light blue 1x1 tiles for eyelids.
All in all, Surgeo is a winner who I would not hesitate to add to your collection.
41570 Skrubz
Squeamish with performing medical procedures, Skrubz is only the second Mixel ever to be on wheels instead of legs, with the first being Tiketz. No doubt he is named after a scrub suit; the hygienic outfit worn by surgical staff during operations.
His cycloptic eye is mounted central to four hospital lights, connected to his main body by hinges. And it looks great! Medium azure is dispersed throughout the model which creates an impressive color scheme.
Skrubz' mouth is covered by a window which delivers quite the striking appearance. The tongue behind it and rows of teeth covering the top and bottom of the window are particularly nice!
He is equipped with two defibrillation pads to jolt the Nixel he includes, pictured below, back to health. This is my favorite of the three Nixels in the series and I'm rather fond of his sad face printing and right-legged cast. Poor guy!
Skrubz has all sorts of charm and is for sure a set to consider, but he is still my least favorite of the Medix; with Surgeo taking second place for me ever so slightly.
41571 Tuth
I've saved the best for last! Tuth manages to be both terrifying and adorable at the exact same time. Obsessed with checking your teeth no matter what your health case is, this dentist is a tooth himself... hence the name.
The shaping and curvature of Tuth's body is absolutely fantastic and everything from the ridges of the bottom of the molar (his head) to the spiky root part that sticks into the gums (his legs) is incorporated in, and represented to perfection. He truly is a living tooth! Ever so creepy is the fact that he is a tooth with teeth and gums himself - toothception! I'm sure the unsettling nature of Tuth is the reason why Skrubz' Nixel looks so worried, right?
A cute and subtle addition to Tuth is the bowtie on his chest. He is armed with a dental hammer or pick tool in his left hand, while his entire right arm acts as, you guessed it, a toothbrush! A 1x2 trans-neon green plate is used to good effect for the toothpaste. I wonder what flavor that is? Leave me your best guesses in the comments!
Useful parts include some 1x2 white and aqua slopes, two 1x1 medium azure slopes, a 4x4 medium azure plate, and six of the 1x1 tooth/toe tiles first used in Series 7. Like Balk, Tuth stands on three legs.
Overall, Tuth is my favorite Mixel of the Medix tribe and my favorite of all of Series 8. He might even rank as one of my favorite Mixels of all time! And here's a good idea: buy a copy for your dental hygienist too, and give it to them at your next appointment to keep on display in the office. Tell them Brickset told you to. ;-)
Verdict
The Medix are FANTASTIC. Yes, fantastic in capital letters. They may look like characters straight out of a horror movie, but they have all the great designs we have come to expect from Mixels with a refreshing color scheme to boot. I dare say that they are one of my favorite tribes of all time; I can at least say that the Medix are my favorite tribe of Series 8.
I am super glad that LEGO chose to make medical Mixels to inhabit and work in Mixopolis, especially considering that City's own medical subtheme has been neglected so much; especially in recent years. This type of outside-the-box thinking has allowed Mixels to keep pushing boundaries and I applaud the set designers for their achievements. The rest of the wave reflects this too, but to a lesser extent compared to this spectacular group. I highly suggest you buy them.
We conclude our Mixels Series 8 reviews with a look at the fire-fighting MCFD in a few days!
Thanks to Huw for the photos.

Well done on the review! I still gotta build these guys myself. XD
No MAX?
And Glad that you noticed Doubleface on Surgio. I though I am the only one who noticed that!
I bought all 3 Medix not too long ago, but I actually did give Tuth to my mother who is a dental hygienist, so she could display him at work. So now I either need to get another one (he really is awesome), or wait for my mom to retire in a year or so.
I got these ones for parts....can't help but think they are frigging terrifying....hope the designers weren't trying to help kids not be scared of doctors because I can see them having the opposite effect
I was thinking the same as Shib!! They are very imaginative, though! Will have to pick them up...
Hi, I think that the Black Plate 2X2 Round on the Surgeo´s syringe should be before trans-lime green 2x2 cylindrical brick and not next to the needle, because the black rubber on the syringe is the part that push the medicine
I loved building Tuth too, definitely my favourite of the bunch.
Before building Skrubz, I was looking at the image in the package and wondered what type of weird 2x3 plate was used for his hands. On opening the packet, I realised that they've just really really hideously photoshopped the bottoms of the studs out! What a weird thing to do :-O I'm used to them photoshopping the colours and removing some of the lines from between the bricks, but removing the underside of the studs is quite bizarre.
They look scary! Though there are A LOT of rare/useful pieces in these sets, I definently gonna buy them! The tooth paste looks like lemon, or am I total wrong?
This was a fantastic review. I got the tribe a week ago and it's got to be my favorite.
@omnium: The underside of the studs aren't really photoshopped out; it's just a rendering error. The same exact thing happened with http://brickset.com/sets/8677-1/Ultimate-Build-Mater back in 2011. Obviously the CGI assets LEGO uses for 2x3 plates are missing that detail.
@ OscarWRG
Yes, you're sort of right about the black Ø16 plate being in the wrong place, but I reckon the solution should be to change the cylinder to transparent white and make the dome trans-lime-green.
I won't let that cock-up dissuade me from buying this series.
"Surgeo is a surgeon; in case that huge syringe wasn't enough of a hint!"
Maybe he's just the anesthesiologist... :P
One step from adorable and one step from nightmarish...
Yeah, I agree with the crowd here, these are terrifying!
@Aanchir
You know, I hadn't realised they were renders and not photos. Does that make me a bit slow on the uptake?!? :-)
Tuth looks like just having stepped out of a bizzare horror movie!
And LEGO says thay do not want to display scary things, like army vehicles :)
Green toothpaste?? Cold be a mint one , or Green tea (quite common in China, along with other herby flavoured stuff)...
@omnium: Nah, it can be tricky sometimes. And you did pick up on the difference from a real 2x3 plate, so your observation skills aren't in question. Honestly, some of the best clues that a picture is a render is when you spot those kinds of imperfections (or, in some cases, imperfections that should be there but aren't, like molding marks or streaks on metallic-colored parts). Now that you know to associate those kinds of things with renders it should make it that much easier for you to differentiate renders from photos!
Great review, excellent photos. And yes, Tuth is probably the most beautiful set ever produced by TLG. Perfect.
