Ideas Showcase

Posted by ,

I have taken on the role of producing a LEGO Ideas showcase to promote some emerging Ideas projects. I plan to showcase LEGO Ideas projects every two weeks.

Once an Ideas project is approved it has one year to gain 1000 supporters. The project will gain an extra 182 days once it has reached 1000 supporters, and another 182 days will be added when it has reached 5000 supporters.

For my first showcase, I have selected six projects that are close to reaching an additional 182 days. Let's see if the Brickset Effect can give these six projects a boost.

Read on to see whether you agree with my selections.

I Am Your Father

By szabomate90

The Empire Strikes Back's Duel on Cloud City between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader is one of the most iconic and significant scenes in the Star Wars saga.

This project has gathered a solid support base and looks likely to continue building followers. I am a bit cautious in recommending a licensed theme particularly a license as strong as Star Wars.

This project depicts an important scene in a Star Wars movie which should be produced as a set.

Portable Chess Set

By dephra

This sleek portable chess set is made out of 274 LEGO parts.

Following on from 21305 Maze, imagine traveling with this portable LEGO chess set on a plane or train to while away the time.

Mini Container Port

By littlebricker

The colourful containers and cargo ships sitting on a blue sea background.

Having worked at sea for 22 years, I have a soft spot for nautical themed LEGO sets. What appealed to me was how littlebricker has used the radiator grilles as portholes in the ship and apartment windows. There is quite a lot of detail in such a little set.

The Polar Express 10th Anniversary

By PhysicsBricker79

Take a magical ride to the North Pole as countless have for the past 10 years.

This is another licensed theme: Polar Express was produced by Warner Brothers. I like this set because it is a train and I like trains. An accurate steam train is overdue and this engine was based on an American 2-8-4 Berkshire type steam locomotive.

Modular Eagles

By KingArthur

"SPACE: 1999 " is a British science-fiction television series aired from 1975 to 1977 currently distributed by ITV Studios and produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson creators of other cult series like the Thunderbirds and UFO.

I have grown up with Gerry and Sylvia Anderson's various TV shows and Space 1999 was one of my favourite shows. I hope this set gets produced and that people have the opportunity of experiencing Moonbase Alpha.

Steam Tractor

By Mr_Kleinstein

Fire up your steam tractor, and take to the streets of LEGO City. Watch the piston move in the cylinder; see how the power is transferred to the driving axle by chains and gears.

I believe that this set will appeal to a broad range of LEGO enthusiasts; it could be part of an historical diorama or it could add some steampunk details to your collection.

Showcase

These are just a few of the LEGO Ideas sets worthy of promotion. I have filtered sets that are gathering support and have a LEGO Staff pick of approval.

I will look at projects that are getting closer to the 10000 followers threshold in my next showcase.

That Eagle Transporter is stunning! I love the fact that it's modular as well - a stroke of genius and takes it from a purely display piece to one with some genuine playability. And isn't that what Ideas should be trying to champion?

As for the Mini Container Port ... well, that's just outstanding. Excellent use of pieces to create a beautifully scaled model. As you say, using the grille pieces to create micro-sized windows is clever. I've tried it myself in the past but never got quite the effect that this attempt has managed. Brilliant!

Mini Container Port has got my vote! One of the best miniatures ever seen, largely because of the used colours!

I definitely think it's time for another beautiful Lego steam engine, that's for sure.

Great idea! It's not always easy to find time to browse all the new submissions on Ideas, this will be perfect!

Space 1999 for me, had a Corgi one of the ships as a kid

That chess set is brilliant. Exactly the type of thing I would travel with :)

I'm loving the "I am your father" idea I feel it's a shame that Lego hasn't made a set of that by now. If this were to be produced it would be my first Lego ideas buy. :-]

Awesome, my friend and I right now are working on an Ultimate DC collectors series set which wont be done for at least another 3 weeks.

Some very nice work there, apart from the chess set which is utterly pointless.

Re: "I am your father" - Due to the Disney /Star Wars licence, there is no way that they would brand it an Ideas set, even if they made it. They would probably just Firehouse it and say they have had it in development for the last 3 years, with no credit to the submission. P.S. I have already supported most of these.

Loving that Traction Engine

^Me too (Traction Engine). It reminds me of my old Mamod Steam Engine that I had...

I've just been browsing Mamod's website and, wow, they've certainly expanded their range in the last 30+ years... Unsurprisingly, I suppose! :-)

Love that tractor!

I more meant that I'm amazed that Lego has not produced a set based on such a iconic scene and if they were to be it a ideas set or not I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

By in United States,

As models, these are all quite good. that said, the train would see to be the only one with any kind of mass market appeal (outside of the SW set, which obviously would never get made under the Ideas banner)

Good job. I like the ship yard. Lego Ideas can be hard to enter good stuff because it's hard to see what people will like. Just curious, anyone have some good ideas that could be entered?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I also like the ship yard. Very nice color selections. This is a good idea for ongoing articles. Thanks for pulling out some gems for us to review. All the dreck on Ideas keeps me from spending time there.

That's a nice mix of sets! I unexpectedly fell in love with the Mini Container Port; it's delightful!

"Once an Ideas project is approved it has one year to gain 1000 [sic] supporters. The project will gain an extra 182 days once it has reached 1000 supporters..." I think you mean "to gain 10,000 supporters."

The Space: 1999 one is my favourite but it should have included the module the ship is designed to carry.

By in New Zealand,

It looks like my suggestions are popular. Thanks for your comments and I hope that this encourages people to support their favourite LEGO Ideas.

^^ Copied from LEGO Ideas - Project Guidelines: All projects must reach 1,000 supporters within 365 days of being posted or they will automatically expire and no longer accept new supporters. If this happens, you’re welcome to re-submit the project and work to gain 1,000 fresh supporters again.

Gaining 1,000 supporters qualifies your project for an additional six months (182 days) to reach 5,000 supporters.

Gaining 5,000 supporters qualifies your project for a second extension of 6 months (182 days) to reach 10,000 supporters.

That Eagle is great! I have fond childhood memories (sort of) of being traumatized by this Hammer Horror In Space TV show on French TV as "Cosmos 1999". I mean, seriously, Season 1 is full of dark corners, spooky music, ghosts and monsters and blood. And then Dragon's Domain happened and I lost it.
I still have a Dinky Toys die-cast toy of the unexplicably green Eagle Transporter (the guys at Dinky must have been colorblind or something), and it is still my all-time favorite die-cast toy, with the various Bandai Macross VF-1 Valkyries coming in as a close second.
By the way, the name of the Eagle submitter is misspelled as "King Aurthur" on the link. It's actually "King Arthur".

I've never seen space 1999 as I was born to late into the 90s but I may just have too check it out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would buy three Eagle Ones: One to display, one to mod and play with and one to keep in the box for future generations.

By in United States,

All amazing builds. I would love the "I am your Father" set seen soon or maybe even in a Cloud City D2C set.

By in Australia,

Thanks for this terrific showcase. I too have supported the space 1999 ideas idea :). As an aside someone has just added a Wright Brothers plane set that looks quite nice and may be worthy of your showcase next time. Linky for your info: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/143415

@FlagNZ, You're quite right. It appears the 1000 is the first milestone towards reaching the 10,000 goal.

@bluemoose, Thanks! I wasn't aware that the Space: 1999 one comes with payloads. Makes it even more worthy of winning though I doubt it will: the series is too obscure.
