LEGO Olympic Sports - Part 3: Triathlon

Posted by ,

We are nearing the conclusion of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro but there is still plenty more action to come in the final few days. The men's triathlon is taking place today while the women will be competing on Saturday so now seems like a good opportunity to investigate LEGO representations of the three sports which make up the traditional triathlon: swimming, cycling and running.

You can explore a selection of these sets and minifigures after the break...

Swimming is one of the most prominent sports in the world of LEGO and there are several swimming pools to be found in Heartlake City as well as LEGO Town. 1992 saw the release of 6416 Poolside Paradise as part of the Paradisa subtheme, although there was little evidence of any swimming competition taking place.

41008 Heartlake City Pool offers a similarly relaxed atmosphere but there have been some competition swimmers in the Collectable Minifigures theme. Both appeared in 2012 and each one comes with a swimming cap, a gold medal and some printed goggles.

With the swimming complete, the athletes leap onto bicycles and the race continues. We explored some LEGO interpretations of road cycling a couple of weeks ago but there are plenty more besides. Cycling is obviously a popular hobby in LEGO City as bicycles appear in many sets nowadays but the cyclist seen in 60134 Fun in the Park - City People Pack looks as though he might be training for a race!

Running concludes the Olympic triathlon and this the least prevalent aspect of the triathlon in LEGO. 8909-7 Relay Runner is the only competitive runner we have seen thus far but I would not be surprised to see some more in the Sports subtheme which is rumoured to be a part of the LEGO City range next year.

We will be celebrating the finals of the men's and women's basketball competitions over the weekend by taking a look back at the extensive selection of LEGO basketball sets so keep an eye on the homepage for that.

That is awesome! Congrats to your nephew and family! I love these articles. We have been watching the Olympics pretty much non-stop from day one. It is a staple in our house! Awesome to see this represented in Lego!
