We have now entered the new year so the time has come to take a look back at 2016's sets and themes in DrDaveWatford's annual Gimme LEGO Awards.

I encourage you to have a read of his interesting commentary and to vote in the Gimme LEGO Reader's Choice Award (in the page sidebar), which last year was won by 70751 Temple of Airjitzu. Which set was your favourite of 2016?

By in Canada,

I think the lack of new Classic sets in 2016 can be chalked up to much of the 2015 launch wave still being current and widely available. Even now as we enter 2017, the original "Creative Supplement", "Creative Supplement Bright", and "Large Creative Brick Box" are still available at shop.LEGO.com. I understand that to us as AFOLs it's easy not to think about sets that aren't genuinely "new", but an average parent looking for a generic bucket of bricks isn't going to care so much whether it came out this year or the year before. So flooding the market with more Classic sets year after year without regard for what's already out there fulfilling its function in that category would've probably been a bad move.

Ragana's Magic Shadow Castle was definitely my favorite of the sets you have listed for user voting, but it's in close contention with another Elves set, Queen Dragon's Rescue. Other than perhaps the "awkward teenager" Water Dragon, I feel like the LEGO Elves dragons are anything but goofy-looking, and Elandra the Queen Dragon is the most elegant and majestic of the lot. Her set also sets a new standard for complexity in the girl-oriented themes with its 9–12 age rating. Not sure why LEGO won't bump that upper age recommendation up to 14 like they do for boy-oriented themes like Ninjago, though (it's rare to see sets with a recommended age range so narrowly defined).

It's nice to see Architecture and the Big Ben set get a mention.
