The Star Wars saga began forty years ago to the date with the release of Episode IV: A New Hope in theaters - at that time simply known as Star Wars. Since then the franchise has grown exponentially, inspiring generations. The LEGO Star Wars range debuted in 1999, active for the past eighteen years, and has contributed to that legacy.

The theme was LEGO's first licensed theme and has so far brought dozens of sets representing scenes and characters from across the galaxy far, far away. Now, in honor of today's milestone we'd love to hear what your favorite category of LEGO Star Wars products released is. How you make your decision is entirely up to you. Love for the movie/show? Brilliant set design? Beautiful minifigures? All of that could very well factor into your vote...

What's your favourite LEGO Star Wars subtheme?

We have not included the Ultimate Collector Series as the results of that poll would be inevitable, although you may wish to consider the film which yielded your favourite UCS set when making a decision. Also, in the case of this poll Legends encompasses both Battlefront and The Old Republic as well.

We will close the poll in a couple of days and the full results will be published shortly after that, although you can see how the percentages develop above. Let us know what you picked and why in the comments below.

By in United Kingdom,

I think by adding the UCS line you have made the poll a bit inevitable, take it away and the results would be interesting.

By in United States,

I was torn between A New Hope and Return of the Jedi. A New Hope includes a range of some of my favorite sets but also has, what I feel, are some of the most glaring omissions from produced sets (Lars Homestead, Mos Eisley Spaceport, Bantha's and Tusken Raider camps). Return of the Jedi is my favorite Star Wars movie, although I think it has been well represented by sets (aside from Dagobah - which could be argued is more an omission from Empire Strikes Back sets). In the end I chose A New Hope. I wonder how well A Phantom Menace will fare :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

^^ Done! Good call.

Please be aware that the results are having an issue displaying after voting right now, you'll notice. We're working on it! :-)

EDIT: Fixed!

By in United Kingdom,

I think rebels. I just LOVE the character design. Hera syndula is actually my favourite minifigure. Shame Zeb's beard is the wrong colour. a-wing Vs tie advanced is actually my favourite set. Useful for a new hope as well. Just a great set.

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Apart from the OT, I really-really love those few sets they made for The Old Republic.
All 3 starships and the Revan minifig are perfect for me.
Darth Malgus, Satele Shan and Jace Malcom - I just love them all. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted Rogue One. It has few sets, but the movie is my favorite because of excellent characters that translate into excellent minifigures. Though it is unlikely, I think Lego should make a UCS Cargo Shuttle.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Difficult choice for me as I love all things Star Wars so choosing one is like asking which finger do I like best.
In the end I had to go for Rogue One as the sets for the film have IMO been some of the best Star Wars sets to date, but are close enough to the OT to feel familiar to what has gone before.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

No line for Star Wars: Clone Wars 2003?!?! :p

That one set was awesome :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

The Empire Strikes Back has it all: The Millennium Falcon, X-Wings and AT-ATs - these would be my top three on my wishlist.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

The empire strikes back is the best, Endor an hoth... We need another Cloud City!

Gravatar
By in United States,

what about the extended universe sets?

Gravatar
By in France,

Empire strike backs is the best subtheme? I vote for Rogue One because of the quality of the sets. For the Vth episode , lego realesed few sets without including an element of the Hoth Assault... That's the Bad thing I think for Star Wars V sets.
Thanks for this rating article !

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

What about The Freemaker Adventures? Anyway, I can't choose a specific theme. They're all amazing! :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great to see Empire performing so well due to the strength of the UCS Hoth set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My favorite film is Empire, but looking at my collection, the most represented subtheme seems to be Jedi. A few of my top sets from that movie are the Ewok Village, UCS Imperial Shuttle, Death Star Final Duel, Imperial Shuttle Tydirium, et cetera. Wish we could get a UCS AT-AT and new Cloud City.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks like I'm the minority here. I love the Episode II sets and really wish they would remake Jango's slave I with Zam Wessel. I would also love to see a set based off the geonosian arena, with Acklay, Reek , and Nexu.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah, I'd also cast my vote for the EU stuff.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

Thanks for this poll, I am torn between Episode III and Ep IV. The CT phase II armor is badass.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely Episode III. It has a large diversity of sets, and unlike the Original Trilogy it doesn't have the same few sets getting rehashed over and over. Not to mention I think in general the sets are quite nice, without any really bad sets.

The Clone Wars are nice too, but the large eyes drive me away.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@KyloRen0806 That would be Original Content!

We shall add EU as an option momentarily.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I voted the Force Awakens as especially with the new summer sets it provides excellent coverage of the film and great minifigures.

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

Hoth is the best, but we need Dagobah

Gravatar
By in United States,

personally I loved the Old Republic sets, all of them were excellent renditions of the source material, and the minifigures were some of the best at time, Darth Malgus perhaps still one of the top 10 star wars figures made. setting aside that short 5 set sub theme I'm hard pressed to pick a favorite.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I went with EU, it was great to give relatively obscure vehicles like the TIE Defender a chance to shine.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Jedi is my favorite. That is all there is to it...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Voting for Buildable Figures, partly 'cos I love having them lined up on my desk but also 'cos I just wanna spite the peeps that get excessively angry about CCBS being anywhere near their system theme.

You're welcome :V

Gravatar
By in Canada,

You mention the (obvious) reason why the UCS subtheme was not included, but no mention why the Technic subtheme was left out. (Not that I would have picked it, but maybe somebody would.)

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ Perhaps we can lump those with Buildable Figures due to the similar concepts. Best not to set too many categories as then it becomes harder to analyze the percentage results in the end. I feel we've included what will be the most common responses, for the most part. :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Why no Microfighters?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Episodes I-III in my opinion have some of the coolest sets and the largest variety of characters to create in minifigure form. However, this poll is making it more clear to me why they make very few sets from those three movies. Which is disappointing considering how many minifigures and sets they are missing from the theme.

I do agree that the original trilogy has classic ships and I like those sets too, I am just so sick and tired of seeing luke, han, chewy, r2, 3po etc. in every single set.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

All sets from Rogue One was undoubtely fantastic, even the smaller builds was well executed and the minifigs were just great. However I chose ep. V as my favourite subtheme, since I've loved AT-AT:s from the very first moment I saw one. Hopefully we can get a new one soon.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted for ROTJ, ep 6. That's the movie I have the most sets from. And even the sets that I don't have I think are great. For example: all of the versions of Jabba's Sail Barge and Palace, The Final Duel set on DSII, the Home One set, and --of course-- the Ewok Village UCS set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm really surprised to see Episode 5 (best movie) winning this, as to me the list highlight two things: an overwhelming lack of diversity, with next to nothing (especially recently) from Dagobah and Bespin. It's all Hoth, all the time, and a lot of that is mediocre.

I think if I was ranking the first 6 movies as far as LEGO reprsentation (putting the other SW stuff aside for a moment), I think 4 beats out 6 by a nose, then episode 1 is next, then 5, then 2. Episode 3 LEGO content is really lacking

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I went with Clone Wars. Even though I never actually had any of the sets, those were the ones I always wanted. Mainly due to the clones of course, they're just plain awesome. I must admit I've BrickLinked a few to scratch the itch. :P

Gravatar
By in Germany,

In my opinion Rogue One is an exceptional Star Wars film. Although the subtheme does not comprise many sets, the quality of the sets is consistently high. As an OT fan, I'm a bit surprised to say that my vote goes to Rogue One!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for the change @TheBrickPal but now I cant decide between A New Hope my favourite film and Return of the Jedi which has some great sets. OK answered my own question, its a Lego forum after all.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Rogue one or Clone wars or rebels? I think I'll go for clone wars but it is very close.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I'm an OT fan, so it's tough to chose from those three movies - ESB has the great AT-AT (especially first and last versions), ANH has my favorite playset (last Cantina), but RoJ has an amount of amazing sets: the Battle of Endor playset, last Sail Barge and Tydirium Shuttle with amazing minifigures and the very decent A-wings and B-wings. So my vote goes to RoJ, even if I like the movie the least.

Honorable mention: Force Awakens with amazing ships (X-wing, TIE, Resistance Transport) and great minifigures (Rey especially and the FO Stormtroopers) and Rogue One with a very decent AT-ST and Y-wing.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I'm gonna suprice you all and say The Phantom Menace. My first star wars set and one of my favourite sets of all time was Naboo N1 Starfighter (the first edition). Podracers are also one of the best vehicles ever made by Lego. The close second would be Empire Strikes Back for Hoth's AT-AT and third would be Clone Wars for so many sets while growing up.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I went for Attack of the Clones for the wonderful diversity of designs.

I'd have liked a non-minifigure scale ships category; those are my favourite sets. A real shame the midi scale failed to become a major sub-theme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I went with Return of the Jedi, simply for the fact that I've enjoyed the sets from that film the most lately. The Ewok village, Throne Room Duel and latest renditions of Jabba's Palace are all really standout sets.

A New Hope is a VERY close second, because it gave us the UCS Death Star, Millennium Falcon and Sandcrawler sets; Lego still hasn't gotten the cantina quite right though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Had to go attack of the clones just because of the TX-130. There's an entire part of my childhood built just on that vehicle. Otherwise really close. I think the runner up for me would be Episode VI, for imperial shuttles and Endor.

The whole time I could hear Palpatine in my head, "good good let the indecision flow through you..."

Gravatar
By in United States,

I went with The Expanded Universe. It's a given that we'll get sets from the Original Trilogy every year (and the Prequel Trilogy to a lesser extent) plus sets tied to a recent film/tv series, but whenever they release something from the EU it's a welcome surprise.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Brick_Knight hold up, ESB is the best because of Endor? Are we thinking of the same movie?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Kind of disappointing to see that people are voting based on what there favorite film is, rather than what subtheme has the best sets.

ESB is a great movie, but I think the sets are some of the worst, purely because it's just Hoth set after Hoth set after Hoth set. With only a few of those being really good sets. (The AT-AT's and possibly the snowspeeders)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I chose RotJ because of the Ewok Village mostly. But I love the Battle of Endor set and the Tatooine sets as well.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This is a very tricky question with quite a few variables to consider.

My favourite Star Wars film is probably The Empire Strikes Back but LEGO's coverage of the movie has been patchy, particularly given the lack of Cloud City products. On that basis I believe A New Hope is by far the best as almost every scene has been represented in some way but there are relatively few sets or minifigures which really stand out in my opinion.

However, based on the consistent quality of the sets I think Rogue One is probably the most successful. There is no significant weak link in the range released thus far, although the film itself is not among my favourites of the saga and there are plenty of gaps which have yet to be filled, inevitably due in part to the short time since the first sets were released.

Ultimately, I voted for The Force Awakens. It is neither my absolute favourite Star Wars film nor does it offer the very best sets but I think it ranks relatively highly on both counts and the overall coverage of the scenes and characters since 2015 has been brilliant.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I voted for the clone wars, I had loads of the sets when i was younger and always loved the tv show

Gravatar
By in United States,

^Teriyaqi, but the TX-130 isn't in Attack of the Clones...

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Interesting question
My favourite movie is Empire.
My two favourite sets I own (have only re-started collecting in the last few years) so far are UCS Slave 1 and AT-AT (75054).
If I look at all the sets for each sub-theme, potential and delivery.
Empire has the best potential, but lack of updated Cloud City, the awful Insult on Hoth set, need for revised TIE Bomber and lack of Dagobah shows that it clearly isn't anywhere near its potential.
Whereas whilst you could have an updated Endor battle set and either sub-theme a much needed Nebulon-B, I think Jedi has mostly fulfilled it's potential.

Gravatar
By in United States,

You should create a new poll with a different question. Maybe ask "Which Star Wars theme has Lego covered best?" That way people would hopefully stop voting for their favorite movie and instead vote for the theme that is actually the best in Lego form. I would argue the Empire Strikes back is the worst subtheme, simply based on the fact that Lego has only covered about 1/3 of what is actually in the movie.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Bycougers I'd be hoping they're voting based off the sets more than the movies.I wonder if that was clear... and if it wasn't clear before, should be now. :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@xboxtravis7992 yeah I wasn't sure whether to do attack of the clones or clone wars. I picked attack of the clones because the tx-130 shows up in a game based on that movie, although I could've also gone clone wars because the tx-130 shows up there too. I figured the tx-130 I grew up with (the one in the game) was attack of the clones because the clone wars sub theme didn't exist at that point, so I went with that.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Teriyaqi
The TX-130 would be considered part of the expanded universe. That's one of the main reasons I voted for that category.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

My favourite film is Rogue One, closely followed by episodes IV (ANH) & V (TESB), and the animated TV series SW Rebels.
So as tricky a question as this is, since all films etc. have yielded wonderful Lego SW sets, I based my choice on the source material, not on a particular set, otherwise I feel it would have been impossible for me to make a choice.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I like to add that i bought and built all R1 sets, and I like all of them tremendously. The entire range of sets from this sub-theme is solid.
My number one set from R1 is Krennic's Shuttle!
Also all R1 minifigs are superb.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Perhaps a more interesting perspective would be to name your favorite set from each theme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted based on the movie. If I like the movie, I'll want the sets. If the movie was lousy, even if the sets are good they will remind me of a sub par film.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Tough one- Rogue One sets represent the movie perfectly, but I love the limited Rebels sets available also, the Ghost and Phantom together are almost my favourite only pipped by the ewok village- so Ep 6 takes my vote.... Just.
Thanks for this poll, great to see many opinions

Gravatar
By in United States,

For me it was a tossup between EpIV and EpVI. While RoTJ is not my favorite movie, it has a nice diverse range of sets with Ewoks on Endor, A and B Wing Starfighters, Imperial Shuttles, AT-STs, and Jabba's Sail Barge/Skiff & Palace.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I agree with the Capn's last comment above in almost every sense - there hasn't been a single dud so far for the Rogue One set range and that is very strong - particularly in bringing in many new vehicles and an old favourite.

BUT - the fundamental issue here is that Empire Strikes Back is in 1st, yet based on its Lego representation, it really doesn't merit this over, say Episode IV or VII. We've only ever had 2 or 3 playsets based directly on Cloud City, and they haven't been eyebrow raisers, no matter how much they fetch on the MISB market. We also haven't had much representation of Dagobah, nor the Millenium Falcon's trials and tribulations. In TLG's eyes thus far, Empire Strikes Back is more like Hoth Strikes Back.

I voted for the Clone Wars - though the character faces are weird, the actual range of set designs have been fantastic - the ATOT and Dropship being a particular favourite of mine. Plus, you know, it was a really very good tv show.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@TheBrickPal: I voted Star Wars, episode IV, speaking of which, you have the I after the V in the summary.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Despite the film's reputation, I'm surprised to see Phantom Menace so low considering LEGO keeps going back to that subtheme. Those sets seem to continue to sell.

A New Hope for me. Love to see some more Cloud City sets in the future though, that could swing my vote to Empire.

Rogue One sets were outstanding across the board.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not a proper subtheme exactly, but i have every single Star Wars mini and polybag ever released (and not). A lot easier on the wallet (usually) than collecting minifig scale or esp UCS sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@boneheadhh1 aw, my bad. That sucks, too, cuz EU has lots of other stuff I would have voted for.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Return of the Jedi, it has some great sets!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted for the Original Content sets. Not because I think they are the best, but because they add interesting and fresh story lines and characters to the beloved classics. I particularly enjoy the four Freemaker Adventures sets, and the story behind them. But I don't think there is a bad answer here. All LEGO Star Wars is AWESOME! :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted for Attack of the Clones. I love all the great vehicles and locales introduced in it. Hopefully we get a new version of the Republic Gunship soon! Also some Geonosian Arena sets are sorely needed.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I decided to go with Rogue One, in part because I loved the movie, but also because of the sets even though I only have the AT-ST. But I for sure didn't expect Empire to be in first. At 22:37 (10:37 PM CST), it led at 22% of the votes

Gravatar
By in Japan,

Having recently returned from a decades long dark-age I mostly have EPVII sets in my collection. While I love other films in the franchise I can only go by what I have in hand and can judge for myself.

Thankfully, many of the builds have been very very enjoyable and I love the new techniques used in making them. Owning several sets for battlefront, and Rebels I can honestly says EPVII sets stand a cut above. My favorite build so far has been the Resistance Transporter. It was really clever and looks the part as seen on film.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I noticed it now, where's the Old Republic? The sith interceptor was one of my earliest sets, and extremely well detailed.

I'm surprised episode I ranks the lowest, even after OC, buildable figures etc. The only places/scenes from the movie that have yet to be rendered in Lego is queen Amidala's palace and the Lucrehulk-class frigate, which are far too big too become actual sets. The theme haven't had any big disasters either (speaking of the assault on Hoth).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Empire Strikes Back is my favourite movie but off all the subthemes in LEGO, the Rogue One sets have impressed me the most

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

@teriyaqi
Yea ESB, i don't know Why i put Endor in ESB?! I was probably to quick in my comment.
TLG need to release more sets from ESB, but still all the hoth sets are awesome, it feels like i am the only one that actually like the "disaster" from ESB.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I went with Rebels. It's the set I've spent the most on and regularly have out on display.
The Minifigures are excellent and I love the McQuarrie stormtroopers - 4 in one set! The Ghost and Phantom combo and AT-DP are standouts too.
Since we're here my favourite LEGO theme is Prince of Persia. Always got my fingers crossed for a new Desert theme. We got Jungle this year, so maybe next...?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Honestly, this is a hard decision, I'm torn between any one of the original trilogy movies and the clone wars, I love the movies and don't love the tv show, but the sets from the tv show were so many and so good.

Gravatar
By in France,

so it looks like people voted for their favourite movie?
rogue one for me, it has some of the best sets and the best ratio of good sets.

@The creative box : I guess people hate the movie? I actually liked it, I think ep 2 was the worst and I'm not very fond of the sets either. episode 1 has darth maul at least, who was cool in the movie and also as a minifig.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Hard to nail it down to just one movie. I like all the original trilogy vehicles, so Episodes 4-6 plus some sets from Rogue One.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

My vote is for A New Hope as I like and collect the minifig scale original trilogy ships, so with X-wings, Y-wings, TIE fighters and Millennium Falcon this has to get my vote, though Return of the Jedi a close runner up for the B-wings, A-wings and Imperial Shuttle.

In addition my favourite recent sets have been the Force Awakens Millennium Falcon, X-wing, TIE fighter and Rogue One Y-wing, which are really just updates, slight tweaks and re-colours to the New Hope versions, so although they may be better sets (more detailed, improved modern part selection) my vote has to go to where the original designs came from.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I didn't see an options that said "SPACESHIP!!" so I didn't vote...

Just kidding, I think the Buildable Figures are slick, and they continue to improve the building techniques which is a plus. And because bionicles are gone, now it is the only way to get CCBS pieces.

Gravatar
By in United States,

love the new "Freemaker Adventures" stuff too, both show and sets

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

@Fauch: Yep, that's most certainly the case here. That explains why the other prequel-triology movies rank so low. If I had read the other comments, that would've made things mroe clear.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Well i voted for ESB but not because of the movie, the movie is great but the sets are also great. The most sets are old but awesome looking for the age, still my favorite "sub-theme"

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Favourite non-UCS set would be an interesting question
After only coming back to the hobby in recent years in my relatively small collection it is definitely the AT-AT (75054), with the Imperial Shuttle (75094) and ANH MF (7965) rounding out my top 3.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

And Favourite non-UCS set I wish I owned ;
Imperial Star Destroyer (75055 , and am hoping TLJ has a Finalizer set) comes out on top, followed by, Jabba's Sail Barge (75020), and The Battle of Endor (8038)

Gravatar
By in United States,

10188 is the set that brought me back to LEGO after nearly 30 years, and Episode IV is till my favorite after all these years.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Based on some of the leaks for the TLJ sets, looking like I will be very broke come September and TLJ could be one of my favourites

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

^ have you seen leaks for TLJ sets!? Where?

Gravatar
By in United States,

^A quick Youtube search for Lego Star Wars The Last Jedi set images should get you them. There's only three, though.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Those last jedi sets look fantastic. I hope the other sets will have the same quality.

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Thank you @coson, the first order star destroyer looks awesome!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

I voted for The Empire Strikes Back, as the legendary Red Five X-Wing Starfigther set is from that movie!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Microfighters is definitely a sub-theme but it's excluded. I would have voted for it too. I've actually managed to collect each Microfighter set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted for The Phantom Menace since it's my favorite Star Wars movie and the one I buy the most sets from. I just wish I bought more back when the movie was first released.
