Review: 5004929 Batman Battle Pod

5004929 Batman Battle Pod was revealed last year and its availability has been very patchy so far, although this seems to be improving as the polybag is now for sale at a price of £6.99 in UK Toys R Us stores and has also appeared in several LEGOLAND parks around the world.

The set includes an exclusive Tiger Tuxedo Batman minifigure which is bound to prove popular and the unusual plastic pod is also fairly interesting, particularly since this appears to be the first in a series of similar packs. I have therefore been eager to acquire one in order to take a closer look at the contents of this mysterious polybag!

Minifigure

Tiger Tuxedo Batman makes a brief appearance in The LEGO Batman Movie as Bruce Wayne selects a suit to wear for Commissioner Gordon's retirement party. He decides against this garish ensemble but it looks brilliant in minifigure form, with a flame yellowish orange jacket featuring irregular black striping on the front and back of the torso. His arms also include stripes and matching cuffs and the design continues onto Batman's hips.

A dress shirt is visible beneath the jacket and a traditional bow tie completes the outfit. However, Bruce always feels most comfortable when wearing the cowl so that is also included along with a double-sided head showing smiling and angry expressions. The legs are black to match and the figure comes with a selection of gadgets which are stored inside the pod.

The Completed Model

The battle pod itself comes as a single piece and features an embossed sticker on the front as well as a hinge around which the pod opens. It is about the size of a tennis ball and includes flat surfaces on the top and bottom so you can display the pod without fear of it falling over. In fact, the underside slots over studs, albeit without any clutch power.

Opening the pod reveals another sticker serving as a backdrop for the minifigure alongside a 1x2 plate and a 6x6 round plate, both of which are fixed in place. Tiger Tuxedo Batman stands on the light bluish grey 1x2 plate while some accessories are stored on the other side. These include a black batarang, a grapnel launcher and a printed 2x2 tile showing a map of Gotham City which has previously appeared in a couple of Juniors sets.

Overall

Collecting the numerous Batman suits from The LEGO Batman Movie is a lot of fun and this is a nice addition to the range. I like the bright design of the minifigure and it is an outfit which Bruce Wayne is seen wearing in the film, unlike many of the other figures which have been released in recent months, so is more appealing in this respect.

The combination of Tiger Tuxedo Batman and the selection of fairly serious crime-fighting equipment seems a little odd, although it increases the play value and the space inside the pod is well used. Furthermore, the exterior of the battle pod looks great and I appreciate the inclusion of a rare printed 2x2 tile. This polybag is currently available at a price of £6.99 in UK Toys R Us stores which seems quite expensive but if you are looking to expand your Batsuit collection, this small set is a necessity.

By in United Kingdom,

Really do hope this is becoming more widely available. I'd like this without having to spend over £13 on it as that's the cheapest I've seen it on eBay.. Not seen it in the Preston Toys R Us in the UK, I was there earlier today. Hopefully it'll show up in Smyths as that's easier for me to get to.

By in Germany,

I was waiting so long for this one (ebay prices were extreme), got it last week ;-) It's a really nice set, thank you for the insights. There is another one coming for Nexo Knights, I'm curious when it does appear in stores.

I grabbed this at the weekend! It's a really nice figure and the pod is pretty cool, although I wish it had studs on it.

Checked toysrus in Liverpool and Chester, and no sign of it. Nothing online as well. Hope i'll find it soon.

By in United States,

So the pod is an actual piece(s)? I thought it was just cheap packaging.

Any word on whether or not the Toys R Us stores in the US will have this available for purchase?

By in United States,

I hate to be the one nitpicker of the group, but shouldn't it say "grapple" rather than "grapnel"? Other than that, nice review.

By in United States,

It honestly looks a fun addition.

By in Australia,

Wow, these are actually out in the wild? That's good. Maybe people will be able to pick them up for under a hundred bucks.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I've had my eye on this for quite a while, alas have had no luck finding it anywhere here in Melbourne, which is extremely disappointing.

By in United Kingdom,

Hoping to find the Bat-Pod on the London-Surrey border later this week.

@Legofan2623,
Both "grapple" and "grapnel" are correct.

By in Italy,

I only wish the pod had studs on the outside so it could be used like an X-Pod in some of the MOCs of yesteryear. But a great minifigure nonetheless

By in United States,

For those in the US, I found a whole shipping box of these at the local TRU. The box was in the LEGO area on the floor - presumably waiting to be stocked along with a number of other shipping boxes. The box was open but the big bag inside was not. I helped myself to a couple, checked the price at the price checker ($5.99), and proceeded to checkout. They stated they couldn't sell them to me or they would get fined. They will be available on 11 June. Good luck.

Bat-tle Pod!

By in Singapore,

These were readily available from Toys R Us in Singapore. Had I known so rare (only collect Star Wars), I'd have picked some up. Cool concept. Wish they'd do for other IPs.

By in Norway,

Picked this up at Legoland Billund this weekend. It was a give-away when purchasing Lego Batman sets.

By in United States,

@Legofan2623:

"Grapnel" is the correct term for a grappling-hook device. If you're gonna nitpick, at least do it right!

By in Slovakia,

@ cgphoenix

where did you find it in Germany?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I got mine in Bristol's TRU at Cribbs Causeway. It was by the counter in a bin display - my wife noticed it as she was paying, so quickly grabbed one. I was more impressed than I thought I would be. It has no spare parts and the bag is similar to the Constraction heads, where it has a perforated edge.

By in United States,

It doesn't happen to be available at LEGOLAND Florida, does it? That would be perfect as we have annual passes.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Checked the Liverpool ToysRUs yesterday, none left on the shelves but when I asked at the customer service desk they were able to find one. Great addition to the Batsuit collection.

By in United States,

Hope we get more pods like this for other themes like Ninjago. I really want to get this, but it's too hard to find in stores. Maybe I'll get it on bricklink or eBay if there are any reasonable prices.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Bayswater in London have a whole box worth as of today, I got hold of one for myself but hurry they're selling fast!

No mention that this is based on Richard Cheese's outfit? He even did a song for the movie and had a cameo!
