5004929 Batman Battle Pod was revealed last year and its availability has been very patchy so far, although this seems to be improving as the polybag is now for sale at a price of £6.99 in UK Toys R Us stores and has also appeared in several LEGOLAND parks around the world.
The set includes an exclusive Tiger Tuxedo Batman minifigure which is bound to prove popular and the unusual plastic pod is also fairly interesting, particularly since this appears to be the first in a series of similar packs. I have therefore been eager to acquire one in order to take a closer look at the contents of this mysterious polybag!
Tiger Tuxedo Batman makes a brief appearance in The LEGO Batman Movie as Bruce Wayne selects a suit to wear for Commissioner Gordon's retirement party. He decides against this garish ensemble but it looks brilliant in minifigure form, with a flame yellowish orange jacket featuring irregular black striping on the front and back of the torso. His arms also include stripes and matching cuffs and the design continues onto Batman's hips.
A dress shirt is visible beneath the jacket and a traditional bow tie completes the outfit. However, Bruce always feels most comfortable when wearing the cowl so that is also included along with a double-sided head showing smiling and angry expressions. The legs are black to match and the figure comes with a selection of gadgets which are stored inside the pod.
The Completed Model
The battle pod itself comes as a single piece and features an embossed sticker on the front as well as a hinge around which the pod opens. It is about the size of a tennis ball and includes flat surfaces on the top and bottom so you can display the pod without fear of it falling over. In fact, the underside slots over studs, albeit without any clutch power.
Opening the pod reveals another sticker serving as a backdrop for the minifigure alongside a 1x2 plate and a 6x6 round plate, both of which are fixed in place. Tiger Tuxedo Batman stands on the light bluish grey 1x2 plate while some accessories are stored on the other side. These include a black batarang, a grapnel launcher and a printed 2x2 tile showing a map of Gotham City which has previously appeared in a couple of Juniors sets.
Collecting the numerous Batman suits from The LEGO Batman Movie is a lot of fun and this is a nice addition to the range. I like the bright design of the minifigure and it is an outfit which Bruce Wayne is seen wearing in the film, unlike many of the other figures which have been released in recent months, so is more appealing in this respect.
The combination of Tiger Tuxedo Batman and the selection of fairly serious crime-fighting equipment seems a little odd, although it increases the play value and the space inside the pod is well used. Furthermore, the exterior of the battle pod looks great and I appreciate the inclusion of a rare printed 2x2 tile. This polybag is currently available at a price of £6.99 in UK Toys R Us stores which seems quite expensive but if you are looking to expand your Batsuit collection, this small set is a necessity.
