Review: 30521 The Mini Batmobile

The LEGO Batman Movie has yielded several polybags in addition to the many standard retail sets, a couple of which are miniature versions of Batman's most famous vehicles. 30521 The Mini Batmobile is perhaps the most impressive of these, incorporating a high level of detail in relation to the low piece count.

Furthermore, the set includes an interesting feature as it can switch between race and monster truck modes, just like the larger 70905 The Batmobile and the vehicle in the movie. On that basis the set seems to offer excellent play value and would look good on display beside its minifigure-scale counterpart too.

The Completed Model

The model measures almost 10cm in length which is quite substantial for a polybag and it looks very faithful to the source material, with a long and narrow profile as well as considerable ground clearance. A light bluish grey 1x1 slope represents the radiator grille at the front and a batarang is fitted on top, just like on 70905 The Batmobile. It looks rather large in relation to the rest of the vehicle but I rather like this comical scaling.

Engine detail lines either side of the Batmobile and red stripes run along the top, just as on the larger version. The wheel rims should really be red to match but have not appeared in that colour before and light bluish grey looks perfectly satisfactory to me. This combination of colours is very attractive but the trans-yellow windscreen stands out above the rest and it even looks as though the cockpit interior is lit under certain light conditions!

The four wheel pods are fitted using 4L axles and it is therefore possible to reconfigure the Batmobile, just as in the film. Removing each wheel support and replacing it at a different angle transforms the model into monster truck mode, thereby allowing Batman to cross rough terrain or crush enemy vehicles. It looks marvellous and I am impressed that the designer has been able to include a primary feature of the large set in this tiny version.

The rear aspect shows similar attention to detail as a trans-purple stud represents the flaming engine nacelle and two more engines are situated above the cockpit. Hinges permit you to angle the decorative fins and a 2x3 angled tile forms the roof in the centre. It looks very sleek and is again accurate to the design of 70905 The Batmobile, completing what has proven to be an excellent little model.

Overall

LEGO has released miniature versions of larger sets on several previous occasions but this is among the most successful to date in my opinion. The detail running throughout the Batmobile is brilliant and it looks equally impressive in either race or monster truck mode, just like 70905, so they are perfectly suited to display together.

Ideally the wheel rims would have been red but otherwise I think this is an excellent little set and would certainly recommend it, particularly if you own the matching 30524 The Mini Batwing. Unfortunately, the availability of 30521 The Mini Batmobile seems to have been fairly patchy, although it has appeared in some Barnes & Noble and Walmart stores in the US. Hopefully it will become more widely available in the coming months.

By in United States,

Over here in Texas there's a Walmart near my house that has multiple of these polypags. I found the set as a fun addition to my collection.

Agree with what @ResIpsaLoquitur said, the "freebie" at Barnes & Noble is way much awesome. I will post an alternate build of that version at Eurobricks since I don't have enough time to write a post. Anyway, I also made the scuttler out of 30524 The Mini Batwing ( https://brickset.com/sets/30524-1/The-Mini-Batwing ) and I am eager to post it, too.

By in United States,

I've been on the lookout for this little polybag. I also built the B&N model at one of their stores in March. I like both of these--the B&N one for the detailing and this one for the conversion to monster truck. I'd like to combine these two models into one mini-build.

By in United Kingdom,

I don't really like this one - looks a little unfinished, IMO.

By in United States,

I got two of these at TRU in February as freebies for spending $30 or more, and I had zero interest in it but I have slowly started to really like it. I have seen it at TRU (for sale and as a promo), Walmart, and in one of the LBM DVD combo packs in my area.
