[UK] LEGO Masters on Channel 4 this week
Posted by Huw,
The first episode of a LEGO version of Bake Off / Sewing Bee / Pottery Throwdown is being broadcast on Channel 4 at 8pm on Thursday this week.
LEGO Masters will follow the time-honoured format of getting contestants to perform tasks which are judged by celebs, with the losing team(s) going home at the end of each episode.
In episode 1, eight teams compete to create a spectacular brick banquet and at least one supersized masterpiece for the banquet table, including duck and prawn toast, hog roast and a gravity defying cuppa.
Among the contestants are a number of AFOLs active in the UK scene, including Jessica Farrell, Steve Guinness, Nate Dias and Nicolas Geeraert.
You can read the description and watch the trailer after the break.
Eight pairs of amateur fans will compete against each other building ambitious brick creations in new competition series LEGO MASTERS.
The pairs of all ages ranging from 9 year old best friends to 40-something adult fans of LEGO – will have their creativity, construction skills and their imaginations put to the test in a battle to be crowned masters of the brick.
The series is hosted by radio DJ and TV presenter Melvin Odoom. Each programme tests a wide array of disciplines from the playful to the technical to the unexpected and judged by a pool of judges led by Matthew Ashton: a man who has made his passion his work as Vice President of Design for the LEGO Group. Joining Matthew in each round will be different expert judges from the fields of engineering, art and design and guest celebrity LEGO fans including Richard Osman, Bill Bailey and Dara O’Briain.
In each programme, the teams who impress the most will progress to the next round until the finale, where just one pair will be named LEGO MASTERS.

My money is on Jessica...
Not in the UK or Ireland? You'll have to resort to using a VPN to watch it, I'm afraid...

Set it to series link, I'll watch it as soon as I have time... looks good though!
Looks fun. Be interesting to see how they balance having kid builders (albeit skilled) against seasoned AFOLs.
Nice to read but we can't watch it also the trailer is blocked in the Netherlands.
Really exited to see Lego go this mainstream, and looking forward to seeing all the creations the contestants have to offer, I was going to say good luck to all involved but I suppose it's already filmed.
Looks nice and here's the trailer on youtube:

I know that Lego's popularity is through the roof, but a program that is not a documentary? Now that is still surprising.
Even the trailer is geoblocked :[
So will it be showed only in the UK, or will it be available in the US too?
Great British Bake-Off looks different this year
@Ayliffe you mean the great british build off ;).
I hope it shows up on BBC America (the only station I can catch up on Doctor Who and Top Gear) soon, looks like a great show! @darthmar thanks for the link!
I doubt BBC America broadcasts shows from others (channel 4 is not the same as BBC 4), but I hope I'm wrong.
This link may allow you to watch the program live anywhere (select channel 4):

Will this be an "officially sanctioned" (whatever that might mean) Lego show, given Matthew Ashton's inclusion I presume Lego are giving it at least tacit approval? I wondered if they might be the sponsor, but that appears to be "Giff Gaff" from the trailer.
I'm looking forward to it, but I just hope they keep the artificial "tv jeopardy" to a minimum.
shame they didnt vet contestants properly and let one professional builder through because of a different name..
^^ Yes, it must be if Matthew is involved.
Wow, that is sooo cool! Looks like fun! I can't help but feel this will be able to address the stigma that some people still have towards us AFOLs a lot better than a documentary.
I hope I can figure out a way to watch this.
Dara O Briain's in this too? Is there anything he's not in?
Got the programme locked in on my planner to view - looking forward to seeing if it trends on the night, as most tv has been pretty vacuous lately. But I guess as we approach Autumn TV bosses assume we suddenly want to watch good programming again and not regurgitated repeats.
There could be contents - who is going to hold the World Record for putting that from the scratch together.. :) .. any ideas? like 3 to 7 hrs?
"...a gravity defying cuppa."
What's a cuppa?
^A cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate
Sounds to me like another 'competition' where the contestants are carefully vetted to rig the results right from the start...
Still, it's Channel 4, so if it all descends into a screaming fiasco, they can slap on a bit of sinister background music and edit it into another documentary about how a well-intentioned ambitious programme making exercise ended in disaster.
Restricted in South Korea too. And VIP cards not valid in the Lego store in Seoul. Ach! Anyhoo, why didn't C4 call this the Great British Brickoff?
Sounds like a fun show... wish there was some way to see it in the US! Maybe Netflix will pick it up, with the popularity of British reality competitions we have now...
