The Buildable Figures subtheme began in 2015 and has included many popular characters over the last few years. However, the galaxy's most infamous bounty hunter has remained elusive and it appears that demand for his arrival has continued to increase with each passing wave.
Finally, 75533 Boba Fett has been released and this should prove to be among the most popular Buildable Figures yet. I have certainly been looking forward to the set and was thoroughly impressed when images emerged towards the end of last year. Not only does Fett's famed helmet look absolutely brilliant but the worn armour is highly detailed and I like the tattered cape worn over his left shoulder.
The Completed Model
Boba Fett stands 25cm in height so is one of the larger Buildable Figures released to date. The model still looks appropriately stocky in relation to the movie though and features plenty of articulation. Ball joints are situated at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles, allowing the figure to be displayed however you wish. I would still love a new hand element with some finger articulation but the closed grip suits Boba Fett.
The high quality of Buildable Figure helmets can always be relied upon and Boba Fett's famous mask is absolutely perfect, as anticipated. The sculpting looks fantastic from every angle, featuring an inset visor and a textured dent which is highlighted in silver. Similar battle wear continues across the front of the helmet and a series of yellow lines are printed on the left temple, just as in the movie.
Silver highlights are absent from the back of the helmet but this area still looks good, including a dark red grille and some moulded dark bluish grey details with a matte finish on the right hand side. Moreover, a small hole allows you to attach the rangefinder. This consists of just three pieces but matches the source material quite well and being able to fold the rangefinder up and down is a welcome feature for display.
The front of the torso is printed with seven sand green armour plates. Only five pieces of armour cover Fett's chest in the movie but the lower plate has been divided into three to fit the contours of this torso component. Nevertheless, the design is very detailed and includes scattered dark bluish grey and metallic silver battle damage, like that seen on the helmet, as well as braided Wookiee hair and a Mandalorian emblem on the right breast. The reddish brown pouches printed on the waist look marvellous too.
Another Mandalorian sigil, representing the skull of a Mythosaur in Legends material, is printed on the left shoulder. This dark red design looks superb against the flame yellowish orange shoulder armour and again includes some battle wear. The Bounty Hunter wears dark red gauntlets which are new in this colour and a black missile is fitted to his left wrist, as shown below. 75107 Jango Fett wore an identical weapon in pearl gold.
The dark red gauntlets confirm that this figure is based upon Boba Fett as he appears in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and his Z-6 jetpack is blue and flame yellowish orange to match. This features rotating thrust nozzles on either side and a flick-fire missile which can be launched by pushing the dark bluish grey plunger underneath. The entire jetpack assembly looks splendid and I am glad that the firing missile is included, although its range is limited.
A soft fabric cape is attached around the neck and the left shoulder. This hangs most naturally over the jetpack but can also be folded behind it for greater accuracy. I think olive green is a suitable choice for its colour, although the cape appears brighter in certain shots from the film. The tattered edges are also very nice and you could crumple the cape by placing it behind the jetpack for an even more worn appearance.
Bounty Hunters must be equipped for every eventuality and Boba Fett therefore carries a selection of knives and other weapons in pockets on his shins. These are printed alongside flame yellowish orange knee pads and I am impressed that the designs vary between the left and right legs so match the movie exactly. Two more pouches, represented by dark tan 2x3 curved slopes, are fitted to the sides of the thigh shells which are new in light bluish grey.
Boba Fett is armed with an EE-3 carbine rifle. The weapons that come with Buildable Figures frequently lack detail as most are constructed around the same spring-loaded missile launcher with a trigger attached beneath the barrel. However, I think this accessory looks marvellous, featuring a narrow scope and a large stock which matches the configuration of the blaster used in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
I was initially concerned that the stock would hinder poseability. However, the grip has been cleverly offset to ensure that you can create a variety of dynamic poses. The stock looks less impressive from the other side as the dark bluish grey panel is hollow, although I still think this element works well on the whole. Fett's Sacros K-11 pistol would also have been an excellent addition to the set but is not a necessity as the EE-3 carbine rifle is far more prominent and the Sacros K-11 is absent from Return of the Jedi.
Boba Fett is undoubtedly one of the most popular Star Wars characters, despite his limited role in the saga, so a great deal of expectation has been placed upon this figure. Fortunately, 75533 Boba Fett does not disappoint, featuring magnificent detail and extensive articulation which makes it easy to display the model. The helmet is particularly impressive and I like the printed designs on his torso and legs as well.
Furthermore, the EE-3 carbine rifle is excellent and the worn cape looks great in relation to the source material. In fact, the only factor which detracts from the set for me is the price as £25.99 or $29.99 feels quite expensive in relation to other Buildable Figures. Additional details like the cape, the jetpack and the rifle must be taken into consideration but I still think a slightly lower cost would have been more appropriate. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful set and I would definitely recommend it to Boba Fett fans, particularly at a discount.
