LEGO Ideas review results
Posted by CapnRex101,The results of the second 2017 review period have just been announced on the LEGO Ideas blog. This review period includes five projects, including a companion to the popular 21309 NASA Apollo Saturn V by whatsuptoday.
Find out what was selected from the latest review, if anything, after the break...
Unfortunately, no projects have passed review on this occasion, as Huw predicted in an article published last September. Hasan explains why this might be in the video below.
Our commiserations to those who were unsuccessful during this review period. Fortunately, it sounds as though the next one, consisting of the seven projects shown in the image below, will reach a more positive result!

Are you surprised by this result and what do you hope will pass review during the next period? Let us know in the comments.

Here's hoping that "I Am Your Father" was denied because a UCS Cloud City is coming...
^ Possibly... :-)
I think it could be possible that the Dive Shop could be the next set, as the Old Fishing Store could use a companion on the water front.
Fingers crossed for D2C giant space shuttle in 1-2 years.
Didn't they already state they wouldn't approve anything that is already licensed, thus they'd never approve a Star Wars set?
I'm a little sad that the shuttle didn't get approved, but not shocked with the variety of other NASA stuff out there. None of the others surprised me.
Fingers crossed for A Christmas Story being approved next round.
Very displeased with these results. :(
I think the Lighthouse is coming. Dive shop is too similar imo. A sea themed diner would also be great.
No set picked means that I don't have to spend money - so yay! On one hand I'm relived, on the other like I said, saves money.
@BigDumbWookiee I think that this Star Wars related Idea hit 10,000 votes before the licensing announcement re: Ideas was made. So that might be why it was both up for consideration, but also immediately rejected.
As to this batch of Ideas, I will first say they are all better than anything I MOC on my own, but as to potential retail demand, I can understand why none were approved. Here's hoping all of those fan designers do/will have more great Ideas for us to vote on and get to 10,000.
I'm not surprised at all. They were either already licensed, too similar to current themes, or of limited appeal.
Does anybody here know the creator of the Shuttle idea? His UN is KingsKnight. I'd be willing to pay him for the list of pieces and some sort of directions...
TBH I expected this, any sets here are too similar to other products (The Nasa stuff), licensing issues (I am your father and Gilmore Girls), or difficult to make into a product that would actually sell/isn't too niche (Peru and NF-15B).
I'm also unsure of the next review period as well, the Diner, Lighthouse and Dive Shop are too similar to the Fishing Shop, the Jaguar is too close to the Creator Expert Car line as well (and also may have licensing issues), Christmas Story is limited to that period, as well as licensing, Ru Paul's Brick Race has licensing and may not fall under LEGO's guidelines about age ranges/content, and the Pop Up Book is difficult to put into a cohesive product (This is the one I want the most).
Okay, who can read lips? Or who has a friend that can read lips?
What is he saying is currently in production, but that gets beeped out? It doesn't look like 'space shuttle' (although I wish it were). Any ideas?
I want a NASA space shuttle!
Yet another time LEGO Ideas is really flawed and kind of pointless.
Called it!
A lighthouse would be most welcomed to my City and it is both a sad thing that Peru project was not approved and a good thing for monetary reasons. Loved the Cloud City possibility.
I'm glad for these results. Too many good D2C coming out this year.
Are the bleeped-out words "Harry Potter"?
I think he said " .... playset". I didn't catch the first word.
I'd love to have the companion sets to the Old Fishing Store, but LEGO won't be doing them, they're too similar.
The Pop-Up Book is the most unusual set of this round, I expect it to be produced.
I didn't care for any of these projects, so I don't mind. From the next batch, I'm hoping they'd choose the Jaguar, but I doubt that.
In addition to this being the last Star Wars set that crossed 10,000 votes before the licensing announcement, doesn't this also close the book on NASA licensed sets since the Saturn V and Women of NASA sets must have necessitated a licensing agreement be established between Lego and NASA?
Too bad when things like this happen a runner-up model from a "stronger" previous review cycle couldn't be resurrected and reconsidered.
My guess would be that the pop-up book is the one selected for the next round, although I really hope it's the lighthouse. I absolutely love that model, and it would be a day 1 buy for sure.
No surprises there. I could never see any of those ideas passing. The next batch it could be the same.
With regard to the Dive Shop et al, I simply cannot see TLG starting a 'Robenanne' range of buildings. If they wanted to do that he'd have been offered a job as an in-house designer (of course, I'm assuming he hasn't!). Personally, I think the better option for both him and TLG, would be to get official recognition as a builder and sell 'official' instructions at a decent price.
I'm not surprised they all failed review.
SW, so already ln consideration as an official product?
The Launch pad, as a companion set is just too much. Requiring that Saturn V is already purchased.
Space Shuttle, already 3 versions produced, plus the city sized versions and the Women of Nasa version.
Gilmore Girls, no popular interest. The show is long gone from popular culture.
Wonders of Peru. Possibly no popular interest, or too similar to the Architecture Skylines.
The Plane, is just too similar to Creator planes of the past, present and future.
I think he kept saying Jive Turkey, but I could be wrong. I like all these sets, but I do not think that they are great Lego sets for kids. I really wish everyone that put sets on Lego Ideas had instructions made. I would love to get dozens of them.
That light house is wonderful and it would go great with the old fishing shop and tie it into other creator sets.
It might sound harsh towards the designers of these sets, but I'm actually glad they didn't produce any of these. And not surprised at all (I agreed with Hugh in the original article). I'm aware that a lot of effort goes into these, so tough for the designers. But IMHO none of them would have made sense given current rules and/or likely markets (or licensing issues and/or size).
Now, for the next round technically all the other 'sea' sets are ruled out (because of the fishing store), but ignoring the RuPaul set that would still leave three potential candidates that might be doable (in one way or other)...
There's not much disappointment on my part here.
The next round is Fishing Store copycats, a franchise LEGO would not support, another car and a non-iconic image from an iconic movie that is iconic, so I think the Pop-Up Book has the best chance of succeeding, as their IP-less "object in LEGO form" projects have fared well.
I wanted that F-15 to happen more than anything! Reminds me of the upgraded versions in the Ace Combat games.
"beep"= "Bespin playset"
i whisd for the shutel and tower i ale was want one big shutel set but misd on the other 2 big ones and the tower for my saturn rocket
The old fishing store series really just needs to expand into its own theme like Minecraft did, instead of clogging up the Ideas review stages.
Not too surprising. The sets offered didn't have enough appeal for a variety reasons, or didn't qualify altogether.
I don't ever see a plane like that being made. Lego has made quite a few generic fighter jets before, and unless you know a great deal about planes, you probably couldn't pick out one from the other. They're all just too similar. And they really need to kick out the license sets from the beginning. Maybe they will in the future, but we all knew Star Wars wasn't going to make it, and never will.
I am deaf and do read lips. (Though I prefer sign.)
Watching that clip, I don't even turn on the sound, but I do use the (not always accurate) YouTube captioning setting. At 2:29, it seems to be one of the "beeps" that others have referred to here, on this forum. Watching it several times, I can see an "s" immediately followed by a "p." My guess is "supreme playset." Perhaps in reference to a larger version of a set that includes something that was turned down in this round of Lego Ideas review?
That's the best I can figure, "supreme playset."
What ever happened to the Voltron set? That has to be coming out this year right?
I will agree with Huw that the F-15 was never going to be made, but not because of similarities to any creator set. If you read the submission, you'd realise that it's utterly gigantic, at around 5,000 pieces. Also, despite being a "civilian " variant, the F-15 is a current US jet fighter.
As to the 110 scale shuttle, while I love it, it's hardly an original idea. Anticipating it's rejection, I have already been bricklinking parts to build a copy. A few elements need painting, but his extensive updates give a good look at internal structure.
At around the 3 minute mark, he makes reference that the review team have already selected an idea to be made into a set from the third 2017 review and hints at maybe a second!
Could be 2 of Robenanne to compliment the Fishing store.
TLG would be absolutely stupid, to not approve at least one of robenanne´ s projects in the next round!
The fishing store seems to be selling almost like hot cakes: There are already more than 4000 owners here at brickset and it is on more than 3000 wishlists. Compare this to the success of other ideas sets or other sets of comparable size/price and consider the short time it has been available yet...
But Lego will find the right conclusion out of the sales figures they have - there are so many fans of Robert´ s designs out there, me included. :)
I’m not at all surprised by this period’s results. Next period, I would bet that the pop-up book has been selected and one of RobenAnne’s is a possibility, those look great.
I don’t think anybody is shocked here. The outcome was obvious. Most of the offerings didn’t survive day one of Review. “I am your father” is a pre existing and active license. A category they have subsequently removed from consideration. Saturn V Launch Tower is an add on for another set. Once again instant disqualification. Gilmore Girls? Not anything resembling brand synergy there for sure. The Space Shuttles “Idea” was “give us a set you have already done 7 Times, just in a slightly different size!” I don’t think we need to get into why a children’s toy company would take a hard pass on “ruPaul’s Drag Race” now do we? “Wonders ofPeru” is a colorful tourism add for Peru. Not much interest there outside of possibly Peru itself. The only potential was the fighter plane. But they already do so many of those under Creator and Technic. So yeah no surprises.
Next review will be pop up book. It’s got too much going for it. Just so obviously a near perfect Ideas style project. Long shot on another of the seaside buildings if Old Fishing Store does well. But unlikely.
Several of the LEGO Ideas projects featured in the video fall into the following category:
"Don’t base your project on a licensed property we currently sell, or a property that entered our portfolio through a previous LEGO Ideas set."
It's frustrating when fans constantly complain after every review result by requesting answers or are shocked by the results. Most answers can be found on the LEGO Ideas guidelines page, projects that are formed around the guidelines will benefit with a higher chance of passing the review stage. If they don’t, you shouldn't be shocked or surprised; don't blame The LEGO Group for your expectations being too high.
I think that the pop up book or the jaguar will probably win. Sad that they didn't announce anything :(
@FaeFrost, Ru-Paul is in the next wave of sets I believe. But yes, that would never make the cut in any universe under Lego.
I am disappointed for the designers...yet, I believe we will finally see a new Cloud City...hopefully, a true UCS.
Not too surprised. Three of them are just the Fishing Store again (although no disrespect to whoever designed them, they're still incredible), one looks like a winter village set and the others just wouldn't sell. Ah well
EDIT: I do apologise, I seem to be an idiot. That was the next one. Ah well still applies
I really want the Christmas Story house. I would buy 2 of those for sure.
Here's hoping 75222 will be the UCS Cloud City. I've been waiting for that for 10+ years.
Personally, I'm glad that none passed review...
Too bad but I wouldn't've bought anything out of this lot anyway. Also, I'm 99% sure he said "Cloud City Playset" at the beep.
I don't care much for any of the set from either the second or third review phases, there. I wouldn't have been interested in any of the second phase lot, and half the third phase lot are just Fishing Store 2.0. I don't mind the house, but in yellow?
I knew that none would pass this review, after looking at the projects and then the guy's face expression on the thumbnail haha
A Cloud City Playset isn't out of the question - although rumours leaked out gradually for the 2017 UCS Falcon, it wasn't officially confirmed or even pictured until very close to the time of its release. Here's hoping there's a Cloud City under wraps!
With regards to the actual ideas, none of these were ever really viable. Upcoming reviews will have much better ideas and it's likely we'll have another coastal building to go with our Fishing Stores.
I'm willing to bet "Project X" is the new UCS Cloud City.
RobenAnne's ideas are well designed, they are indeed great and I liked the Old Fishing Store but, honestly, it's time to stop. To keep insisting on the same niche is annoying and I see this as something bad for the Ideas project. Roben got THREE marine-themed ideas on the next review! Soon more people will try the same just to get a set on the review and the new and different ideas will be ignored.
I believe that RobenAnne can make something different, seriously.
I guess I am a LEGO sucker because I would have purchased any and all of these sets if they had made or do make it into production. That written, my least favorite of both lots is the F-15. While I respect each opinion expressed here, I am surprised at the negative reaction to the marine theme. I don’t have any natural affinity for more oceanfront-oriented sets, but I do see value in complementary models to pair with the Old Fishing Store to have the ability to create a cohesive scene for display. I also don’t understand the use of the word “commiserations” in the recap article. Should it be condolences?
"big spaceship"? Final answer?
If the Fishing Store has been a big seller I can see them going that route again, but seems risky for an Ideas set, price-wise. The Jaguar seems like a serious candidate, but I find the most potential in the Pop-Up Book, if fully re-designed - I think it's much more in the spirit of Ideas. Ru-Paul's, though great, would not be a likely LEGO license and I think the Christmas Story house might be seen as a bit of an expensive novelty more than anything. "Fra-gi-le."
Just caught up on the show last year for the first time, and so loved the Gilmore Girls' Luke's Diner design, though it didn't have a ghost of a chance passing review - it would have limited appeal.
Now, is there really a UCS Cloud City coming? Is it dangerous to get my hopes up? Long, long overdue....
I'm pretty disappointed the Iron Giant set never made the finals.
How often does this occur where none get approved? I guess they had good reasons. Would of liked to see the Shuttle or Tower get approved, but I guess two NASA sets in the last year must of given them a reason not to approve a 3rd? I can see the Christmas House and the pop up book having a good chance, but to see another of ReubenAnne's would be cool but doesn't seem likely, as his second set was already not approved after the first, could be wrong tho.
Meh, none of these interested me that much anyway.
Wtf is that rupaul thing? Based on wikipedia it seems like some talent searching crap. If yes, what would be the next? America's got talent ideas projec?
Noooooo way.
What's with the Groucho Marx mask? Is it a clue? That cannot possibly be his real nose...
Luke's Diner would've looked great next to my TBBT-set. Don't care much for the rest.
Did anyone here the beep when he was saying they were making a big set this year. Well the I am your father scene was in cloud city and I definitely saw him say cloud city when there was the beep.
They may not make the pop up book because Jason (jkbrickworks) already has an ideas set. ( the maze)!
And the winner of the next review will be...
RuPaul's whatever it is
*Gasp*
No really, from now on I always expect the worst offering to win, then I won't be unpleasantly surprised. I mean, they produced that Adventure time crap that no one buys as well.
Who cares what buyers actually want? Remember that TLG was "surprised" by the overwhelming demand for the Saturn V? Yeah, who COULD have guessed?
Guess no one of those Saturn V buyers would want to buy a Space Shuttle to go with it.
Way to go, TLG!
*rolleyes*
^it can happen, and has before. Alatariel (I think thats her name) designed research institute and was co-creator of the big bang theory.
Idk about anyone else but I'm already over the whole NASA theme. The cafe' and dive shop however are a different story.
No big surprise but I do wonder which of the next round are already approved. Personally I prefer the Lighthouse but would they really release something so similar to the old fishing store so soon? I really hope it is not the Pop-Up book.
I'm also not surprised at none of those passing. But I'll be honest, I didn't know what was in review at this time. I thought the next review period was already finishing up.
Everyone loves those seaside places, I'm not sure why. Nothing against the builder. They do have some creativity for sure, but they don't have a place on my shelf, so I won't be buying any. I would doubt they would release more IDEAS sets at that scale/price/similarity, but I have no knowledge on how they choose things, so.
With that said, I think it would be a safe assumption to say the pop-up book will be picked. It is different enough than most LEGO products and it's not just another building or vehicle.
I can't say I am disappointed or excited about anything coming in the next few waves though. I might check out the Voltron set whenever pictures are released, but I don't know much about that IP either.
The seaside town buildings are great, and would do gangbusters if they could release them 1 per year for a few years. Like a “Summer Village”. But that would be complicated under Ideas. They would almost be better off scratching it from Ideas and bringing RobenAnne in house as a contractor or consultant for that though.
I am your Father idea I really wanted, but hopefully Lego will make a Cloud City soon!
I have a feeling it is going to be the Pop-Up Book, because it is unlicensed and creative. The Lighthouse would be extremely awesome to have as well!
i think the issue with the RuPaul set is that if they choose it, people will get mad, if they don't people will get mad.
I never understand how people get upset and disappointed by the results of what Ideas sets are going to be / not going to be released, ITS LEGO, buy the bricks and design and build your own model!!
i think a huge orient express train from the film with all the suspects and Hercule Poirot would be a excellent ideas set
I think the Jag is the one approved. Cars are very popular and that is one of the best I've seen. It looks like a real model, very impressive.
