One of my favorite space sets. I can’t believe that this is from 1996; I was nearly graduating from high school, but I remember quite fondly and deeply playing with this set.

We owned a lot of Space, but this would be one of the few times I actually played with space sets.

Ahh, the exploriens! I loved this theme as a kid! I remember getting this set back in the day. What I didn’t realize is how great of a MSRP it had at the time. I wish there were more little sets like this nowadays at this price point.

One of my earliest sets! Pretty fragile but the neon green parts, especially the visor, really got me. I loved the Exploriens theme, and have always wanted to collect the rest. Even my lifelong online alias comes from that theme.

I remember getting this thing, second-hand, but complete with instructions back in 2001 or so. It was my second Exploriens set, but I wasn't too impressed. Part variety was great, but the ship felt more like a stationary outpost than something that could fly around. I get that this was the Exploriens' whole shtick (they were explorers and scientists, not spies and warriors), but the skeletal design scheme was a bit too avant-garde for my childish tastes (and yet, another weird 1996 theme, Time Cruisers, is an absolute favorite of mine. Hmmm).

Explorians were great when I was a kid. I loved the new helmet style they introduced. I still have the 3 sets I had bought from the series.

I love the stickers and tiles from this line, you could put them underneath the color discs and could expose/decode the images, very cool. Great series and an amazing part of my never ending Lego quest.

Man, they just don’t make wings like that anymore....and what I’d give for a trans-red dish.

I love the theme of space.

This was my first set from the Exploriens theme. Like other people have already mentioned, the set was fragile, but I still love it especially for nostalgic reasons. The wings and decoder elements made this a must buy and helped sell me to this theme, plus this set was affordable. My goal is to someday finish collecting the theme, at the very least get the Starship.

I think in general, I just love the memories that I have of life from this time period. Probably the best time of my childhood. Thank you LEGO for being a part of that time!

@eggbert20 it is quite easy to compare that nowadays Lego puts out a lot more small sets than in 1996. 8 USD then is almost 13 bucks now because of inflation. And below 13 bucks you have a whole range of sets in every major theme plus polybags and magazine gifts.

Can't beat some good 'ol retro Space!

wow, just got that from Bricklink a couple weeks ago!

What a wonderfully funky space flying contraption this was! It looks like it was designed for mineral detection, long range comms, and if need be - a giant friggin lazer! I was deep into my Dark Ages when this was released, however I did see it's big brother 6982 Explorien Starship while wanderdering through an underground shopping mall (that was connected to a subway hub) in downtown Uijeongbu, South Korea. I was stationed at Camp Red Cloud, which was about 3 miles away, and spent every bit of cash I had on the set so had a long walk home w/it. I remember haggling w/the shopkeaper about the price, showing him all the money I had in my wallet, him taking all of it, both of us being satisfied w/the deal, and then realizing I didn't have bus fair home. Good times :)

I do love the name of this ship. :)

@CavalierEternal I usually shy away from them, but that decoding feature makes for a good reason to have stickers!
