Random set of the day: Space Speeder
Posted by Huwbot,
Today's random set is 8400 Space Speeder, released in 2009. It's one of 10 Space sets produced that year. It contains 14 pieces and 1 minifig, and its retail price was US$3.49/£1.95.
It's owned by 2639 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you might find it for sale at BrickLink or eBay.

Gotta be honest, this is about the WORST build I’ve EVER seen in a set. Even for a polybag. Ok figure though.
It looks like his pants are on fire.
I'm sure people liked 2009's Space Police theme for the nifty continuity references to past Lego Space themes, or the big beautiful space ships. I just liked it for the alien badguy minifigs, which I thought were cool and interesting as Lego antagonists.
Interesting model
Bought this one. Cheaper than getting the bigger set this guy was in. Yes, the “vehicle” is terrible. Not sure I even built it.
I remember this well from the Space Police.
Bought this for my kid and the main thing is yes the fig. and the nicely sculpted helmet.
It's good to have too, to moc a little larger ship around him. This is like his little 'shuttle'/speeder' off of a bigger ship.
If this was the GWP I'd buy the Mustang immediately
I only own one polybag from this series (not this one) and got it new, second hand. Still I love this series. I could have gotten the Galactic Enforcer at BrickWorld last year for $150 but passed. . . and regret that.
I just checked its instructions out. Goodness, every piece including those of the minifigure were labelled with identification numbers.
Saw the picture; checked the comments; was not disappointed. Keep up the good work, people!
^^Sets that were made for 2007-2010? that are polies (or Tiny boxes, like this set was) has that.
I think all the sets in the series were in tiny boxes. There were 23, as listed by AndreasL (https://brickset.com/sets/list-117) and they were released from 2008 to 2010.
The first two years of the series had special number ranges. The twelve 2008 sets were 5610 through 5621, while the five 2009 sets were 8396 through 8400. The 2010 Atlantis and Kingdoms sets had numbers that matched the rest of their themes, but the City sets had numbers near the Prince of Persia theme.
Of the 23 sets, nine were City, three Castle (Fantasy Era), three Mars Mission, two Pirates, two Space Police (III), two Kingdoms, and two Atlantis.
I just realized there are no recent sets in the random game; I think this is the most recent with 10 years. What is the official limit?
Though this set came out in 2008 and wasn't a polybag, it falls into the common late-90's polybag problem of messing up the minifigure's costume — Snake's helmet, as seen in 5972-1 , 5979-1 , and 5980-1 , is supposed to have a visor.
@Yooha: According to Dieselville's list (https://brickset.com/sets/list-27452), there have been two sets released later than 2008 to make RSOTD. Both of them were 2009 releases, and both were on RSOTD in the last two months. I think it's safe to conclude that RSOTD can't be something released in the last 10 years.
Space Police was last of the themes that I liked as a whole. Cool ships, interesting aliens and a lot of fun.
I found this one lacking even on release.
Light a fart and build it out!
Thought Space had been missing more than ten years...
Money was definitely wasted when they developed the helmet mould… At least it gave me a good laugh!
Huh, could have sworn there was a space police dude who came with this...
I hope LEGO comes back with this theme.
I’d like to see a return of part Ids to instructions. It’s extremely convenient to be able to search a digital instruction for places a certain piece go.
It literally looks like he's farting flames while manning a gun turret.
What do you do will the left over spares from polybags? Build this by the look of things.
Ah, yeah, I got this chap lying about still. Favourite alien from that theme, maybe tied with the green guy with four arms, who I never got because he came with a police speeder with an open cockpit (cardinal sin to me).
Anyway, this set was boxed and retailed for three Euros in my country. The good old times, man.
I love this set. It reminded me of smaller space sets from when I was a kid. I loved that whole theme. But sadly LEGO Space = Star Wars in the minds of most customers.
Oh well. Too bad they don’t know all parts are SPACE parts.
This feels almost like an artifact of another era—Lego has all but eliminated this smallest size of boxed set. Probably smart, considering polybags can contain even more parts while taking up less space, which lowers both the unit cost as well as the environmental impact of shipping sets like this in high volumes.
Oh man, I remember this set...really brings back the nostalgia. My family was at Five Below, when my dad bought me this set. This brings back memories of the tiny box it was in...that I ripped apart to build the set. :P Sure, the build isn’t great, but to 5 or 6 year old me, it could’ve been the biggest spaceship ever. :D
Also, finally a Set of the Day that I own!
I have all of the Space Police 3 sets. After Agents it's possibly my favorite theme! Great alien 'bad guys', fun builds, and ships that have all kinds of weird and wonderful references to other stuff. Good fun this! (well, maybe not this this, as others said this ship is lacking a bit probably)
We need another Space theme like Space Police with tons of fun and creative new aliens! I can't get enough of them.
@ArielHairRaph: Nah, in fact the latest Space theme (Galaxy Squad) was just 6 years ago. But from 2014 onwards LEGO seemed to start focusing more on other types of sci-fi themes with similar styling to LEGO Space: lots of colorful transparent windscreens, lasers, and accents; antigravity vehicles; 90s Space wheels; etc.
Ultra Agents in particular was specifically envisioned as a “post-Space” futuristic spy theme, and the leader of the Ultra Agents was in fact Galaxy Squad veteran Solomon Blaze. And Nexo Knights likewise had a very LEGO Space aesthetic.
If I had to guess, I imagine this was in anticipation of the inevitable glut of Star Wars sequel trilogy toys that would make it much harder for Space toys without ties to a high-profile media brand (like The LEGO Movie or Guardians of the Galaxy) to compete.
Space Police III was such a weird theme... but that Lunar Limo was a great set.
Sometimes I go on r/lego, flickr or elsewhere and see all these amazing MOCs that others make and despite truly appreciating the craftsmanship it sort of saddens me a little too because I'll never be nearly talented enough with Lego to even slightly compare to their beauty and innovation.
And then I see this was an official release and it lifts my spirits.
I have this set, it was cute. I found Snake's torso in my broken parts bin yesterday, but still have no idea why he is named that.
I am so sad, I wrote a freaking 4-paragraph essay on the racism, xenophobia and glorified genocide of the recent humans vs. aliens space themes, but as I hovered over "Post comment" it dissappeared and I couldn't ctrl-z it back.
@Norkins
That happens sometimes. It usually has to do with how long the page has been open, while not really signing you out, the website sees that you've become inactive and half signs you out. This has happened to me plenty of times and I've come to the point that I just copy my whole comment before I click "Post comment" and even if it does show up, I refresh the page to make sure it actually did. That way, in case something disappears, I'm able to paste it back immediately and have it stay.

I've found that as well. These days, I'm training myself to get into the habit of copying everything before I hit "Post comment", just in case.
Ah, the irony is, it happened to this very post as I tried to post it initially.
