Review: 30364 Popcorn Cart

Some interesting polybags have emerged from the LEGO City theme recently and I think 30364 Popcorn Cart offers significant potential. Similar carts have proven extremely popular in the past and this one incorporates an enjoyable function as popcorn bounces inside the machine!

The polybag also contains a brilliant printed 1x1 brick, representing a traditional popcorn carton, which is only available in one other set at the moment. On that basis, this model could be an excellent addition to a city environment or the popular Creator Expert Fairground subtheme.

Minifigure

The popcorn vendor wears an attractive plaid shirt which was only introduced in 60134 Fun in the Park - City People Pack a couple of years ago but has quickly become very common. This complements his stand which is primarily red, although consistent branding between them would have been even better. Perhaps a patch with the popcorn logo could have been included on the shirt.

Alternatively, that design could have been printed on the minifigure's cap. I think the vendor looks good in his current form though, featuring a smiling head that was also created during 2016 for 60134 Fun in the Park - City People Pack but has subsequently appeared on many other occasions.

The Completed Model

Food carts have been a frequent subject for City models in the past and this example appears familiar, sharing the same wheels as 30356 Hot Dog Stand. It looks reasonably realistic though. The red colour scheme is great and I like the handles for the minifigure to hold. However, the most interesting detail is probably the printed popcorn carton which is only otherwise available in 60215 Fire Station. This looks delightfully traditional and the simple 'POP' branding on the side is lovely.

The popcorn is represented by white ice cream scoops which is effective. Tan may have been a more suitable shade to distinguish these parts from ice cream, although popcorn is nearly white in colour. A nice function is included as pressing the black plate on the back will cause the popcorn to leap around inside the machine. This works perfectly and the trans-light blue windows open, allowing the vendor to reach inside and collect some popcorn.

Overall

30364 Popcorn Cart is certainly an impressive polybag. The popcorn-popping function is outstanding and this model seems fairly realistic, including two spoked wheels which remain available in relatively few sets. I like the printed carton too, especially given its present rarity. The minifigure does not stand out but adequately fulfils an important here.

This is a superb addition to the City range and has already appeared in Walmart stores across North America so I would recommend taking a look in your local branch. Hopefully the polybag will become more widely around the world within the next few months.

By in Canada,

It was in the states a month ago and it trickled it’s way down to Walmart’s in Canada and I was able to snag one. The next day I wanted to go back and grab another one and the whole box was gone. Poof!

Great little set. My nieces love to "pop" the corn outside our Palace Cinema. Had to buy several sets just for the special popcorn carton piece—and that the three "popcorn pieces" included aren't enough.

By in Netherlands,

I think it looks way too plain and simple. It's also too tall for a minifig. Only saving grace is the printed brick.

I think a place for adding butter or salt might have been nice. I’ve seen this at Walmart. Still can’t decide to get it or not...

Has anybody seen popcorn balance so well on top of a carton so high before? ;-)

While the ice cream pieces are effective for popcorn inside the machine, I think a simple stud would've been better once in the bucket. Regardless, it's an excellent set, and I can see Palace Cinema and the various Fairground sets benefiting greatly from it! There was also that old LEGO Movie promotion where the main cast were watching the film together, though I doubt anyone would mod that given it's rarity.

Very nice set and thank you for the information on where to find it. Will probably get multiple. @coenstegemam, we have a popcorn machine at my house that is about the same scale compared to us as the scale between the minifgure and the machine, so I don’t think the height is that big of a problem. There could be a hint of exaggeration in the size but not by a lot.

The popcorn carton was also in the Superhero Girls set 41236 Harley Quinn Dorm, I believe.

@Your future president:
I picked it up at Walmart right after it came out, and totally don’t regret it. It’s a really fun build, (I love the popping feature), and the currently fairly rare printed piece. The minifig, while not rare, is still IMO a great addition. Yeah I think that would have been nice to have a small space for adding the butter and salt - TBH I almost thought the same thing after I got it. Although, it is LEGO, so that helps if you want to customize it! :-)

I had seen a picture of this set when it first came out and then I saw it in Walmart, so I decided to pick it up. One of the best polybags I have gotten in awhile. I already had the minifigure's parts but it was nice to get another citizen. The cart is well built and I love the play feature. The popcorn carton was the perfect final touch. Get it!

Love this little set. Great pieces for its price. I bought it at Wal-Mart and I should buy another one. Lol.

@Thea: You're right, I also thought the popcorn print was new for 2019 but it's actually from 2017! In that set the popcorn was flame yellowish orange.

It's a shame I couldn't find it in my local store.

By in United States,

I love this simple set so much I own two for my fairground.

As my fairground is stored away for the moment I have one built and outside Palace Cinema.

By in United Kingdom,

A really desirable set, just a pity there is no sign whatsoever of it in the UK yet.

By in Turkey,

I see that some people are on the fence about buying this set. Let me say this from experience, if you cannot decide, go buy the set. Because later on you'll regret not buying it. For me, I don't buy a set only if doesn't appeal to me (or my budget).

Awesome set, one of my favourites, just wish there were two more popcorn pieces... Otherwise it's a great set and it's sitting on my desk...

I don't shop at Walmart, so had to pick one up second-hand. I'm also hoping they *pop* up elsewhere so I can get more.

By in Netherlands,

Unfortunately, polybags are rarely sold here in the Netherlands. It will be very hard for me to get hold of.

By in Austria,

2nd printed brick would be fine. After the first customer there is no further selling box.
