42099 4x4 X-Treme Off-Roader - No Stickers
Posted by CapnRex101,
Huw published an excellent review of 42099 4x4 X-Treme Off-Roader recently and some readers expressed an interest in viewing this new model without stickers applied.
I have therefore constructed my set without the stickers. Take a look at the images below and let us know whether you prefer this off-roader with its stickers applied or without them.
I would usually apply the stickers when constructing any LEGO set, although I think this model looks reasonable without them. Advertising decals certainly seem appropriate for a monster truck and I like the decorative skull design which covers the stickers. Nevertheless, plain flame yellowish orange and black panels are perfectly adequate in my opinion.
The only possible exceptions are the black 2x5 bodywork panels situated within each window. These seem incongruous beside the flame yellowish orange panels and applying the stickers alleviates that issue to some degree. However, they attract little attention, particularly when viewing this model from the side where they almost disappear against its dark interior!

The good thing about stickers is that they're optional, and if you want to build a MOC with those pieces you're not limited by the stickers if you didn't apply them.
No preference, but I will say that flame yellowish orange is a severely underappreciated color and its introduction to Technic (since G1 Bionicle) can only be a good thing. Part of me wishes I could replace all the yellow with flame yellowish orange in my 42079-1, so I can match the forklift in 60198-1 AND match the color scheme of 60197-1!
The stickers make it Dakar ready ,non 4x4 tyres for road driving wouldn't need stickers, has anyone seen the tower obstacle course this model clears? Showcase of what this monster is capable of
It looks surprisingly clean and smooth without stickers!
Personally I think the stickers add a bit of character, although what the set really needs is front wheel arches!
What I'd really like to see in sets depicting racing cars etc would be multiple sticker sheets so you can choose the race number or sponsors/colours to then put two or more up against each other.
I like the bold simplicity of the unstickered version. No, I don't have a degree in art.
Thos would be nice in Red..
Easily without. With just looks so cluttered.
If I got this set I might leave it unstickered if only so I could more easily MOC with the parts. But I think I prefer the way this build looks with the stickers. Without just looks plain, particularly with how little bodywork this actually has.
Thanks CapnRex101 Going the extra step to satisfy peoples curiosities and wonders. Thanks for the build without stickers.
I didn’t vote.
For me, I feel like the Stickers make it look better IMO. To me, it’s so weird to see a LEGO set without the Stickers or prints or whatever. XD
I voted with Stickers, but I can see why some people like it without Stickers.
The somewhat puzzling thing is, that those little black panels DO exist in flame yellowish orange..

I'm not fond of stickers on Lego parts because it's always quite difficult to put on and because it keeps dust on the edges.
Both show promise but for a Monster Truck adverts are a must so stickers in this set of course, they are optional.
Thank you for doing this!
Thank you for showing us how the set looks without stickers--I must say this model is quite impressive without them, but I also think the stickers provide some cute jokes and would certainly appear on any professional race vehicle--a NASCAR car without stickers is unimaginable to me! I didn't vote because I feel both versions are excellent.
Here is a Technic-nerd comment. If you look carefully on the model from CapnRex101 you will see that he, as I also do, orients the technic pins so the gap is horizontal, vertical or in line with the the parts in which they are inserted. This is most visible for the blue pins showed in the photos. Huw on the other hand lets the gap in the pins point in every random direction. So right now I am a little confused. Should I applaud CapnRex101 for being an over-nerd (as myself) or should I applaud Huw for being normal? Perhaps that is a question for a survey?
Life's too short to be aligning pins!
My personal opinion is that while the overall model looks 'cleaner' without the stickers, it also feels unfinished without them.
it looks good without the stickers, but it needs a few more yellow panels.
@ Lego-nor; The OCD is strong with this one..
But the real question is: Do the stickers make it go faster?
@Lego-nor: That's pretty much up there with me laying bricks and plates so the orientation of the LEGO logo on the studs is as consistent as their geometry will allow. (Which gets messed up by the fact that, rarely, the orientation is inconsistent between two of the exact same mold!)
Thanks CapnRex101, I appreciate the effort to build it without stickers.
I think it looks too cluttered with the stickers. Perhaps there's a halfway house?
I like to build my sets without stickers to see what they look like, then add the stickers if they are lacking something.
This one is fine for me without stickers.
A third option is missing:
3) with printed bricks
:-)
I love the design but hate stickers for being stickers.
I don't just align pins, I also make sure wheels on the same axle are symmetrical, and align stud-length bushes with the notched section facing outwards from the main body...
It makes it looking more like a humvee without sticker, the low roof line is more apparent.
If I wish to reuse the parts or modify the vehicle to add a little change here or there, I will do it without stickers. If I play with it a lot, I will do it without stickers. If I just wish to put it in the shelve for display purpose, I will do it with stickers. The look itself is just a matter of perspective.
