Production stops for set 10179-1: Millennium Falcon

Today, LEGO announced that it has stopped production of set 10179 Millennium Falcon. They're still available from Shop at Home, but not for long I suspect.

Shame, I'd always dreamed I'd get the Millennium Falcon some day. Nevermind, now it'll have to stay a dream...

I wonder why? But people can STILL buy it from other sites. Like ebay.

I am with CheeseyBricks. I was thinking I would get it some day. Oh well, the Republic Attack Gunship looks like it is becoming similar now. And jumper3485, I think they are stopping it because it takes a lot of money to make them.
Just got the email for this. Glad I ordered mine some time back. The email also said you can get it with free shipping while it's available, which is a decent deal.
I'll be curious to see how much this one eventually goes for on eBay and Bricklink. Hard to see it having the appreciation of the last Falcon (2004 had an MSRP of $100, but goes for $200-$400 on eBay) given how expensive this one already is.

WHAT!! That is crazy! I wonder why, maybe they will make an even larger ship, like a Super Star Destroyer, that would be cool.

Batmaniam: maybe, hopefully not as expensive, I would like to own the set with the most pieces without breaking the piggybank, always a sad thing to do. I bet it will be something other the star wars theme.
I would guess it's the overall cost of the set that's prohibitive and have kept people from purchasing it. Most of the pieces involved are fairly standard pieces, so I can't imagine it's that much more to manufacture from a parts standpoint. They already have a few large sets right now with the Death Star. I would like to see a Super Star Destroyer at some point, though I certainly wouldn't want to pay more than I did for the MF.
But think about it guys (and possibly girls), the production must've cost Lego a FORTUNE. Just like HobbesFan08 said.
jonbuddy/HobbesFan08: not really, probably about $60 which is nothing to them. Like heabstract said, hahaha just kidding, but really, like iabstarct said, most are regular pieces, there's just a bunch of detail. Has anyone even seen the inside? Is it detailed?
Guys, this is not a big deal, maybe they'll make a DVTF (Darth Vader's TIE Fighter) set that can fit 25 vaders and is even more detailed. calm down.................I'm still rooting for the castle.
Finally. It is moments like this that make my life worth living.
It will be back. I would bet a few of my sets on it. Not too many though! Seriously though I would imagine that as long as Star Wars is greatly popular and Lego has the ability to sell Star Wars products, it will return one day.
There is a shop near me that sells them for £100 each, brand new in box.
I doubt these are available at £100 when they are £349 from Lego.
On a related point about deleted Lego sets, I have noticed there seems to be a whole cottage industry on ebay of deleted and older lego sets being sold at increased prices. I don't have a problem with this, as I suppose it is people giving the market what they want. Does anybody have any thoughts on this? I have a lot of sealed lego sets in my collection, and it makes me wonder if I should stick a lot of them in the loft for 5 years and watch them appreciate at a greater rate than my actual home. lol.
Does seem luck of the draw a bit on how the value of certain sets appreciate though. For instance, Cloud City has gone ballistic if you want a MISB set, yet some of the smaller sets, like the landspeeder etc, you can still get for not much more than the original price. Same with Harry Potter, where sets like the Castles, and the Shrieking Shack are very expensive and routinely go for over £150 if they come up mint.
goldfish, you're right - it's almost impossible to predict which sets will rocket in value and which won't. I've spent the last year trying to complete my Lego Star Wars collection, and I've been astonished at how expensive some older sets are now, and how relatively cheap others are. I think that the number of minifigs in the set is one factor, and also the rarity of the minifigs in the set. It's one reason why Cloud City sells for such elevated prices I think - the unique Boba Fett with the printed legs, Lando etc.. The set itself isn't particularly exciting, but the minifigs push up the price. Same with Imperial Inspection which is frankly no great shakes - you can buy the shuttle alone for a fraction of the price. It's the number of figures, and particularly the stormies with the printed legs, that push up the price. I'm not specifically a minifig collector, so it's been frustrating having to pay huge sums for a set just because the minifigs are in demand. Still, that's how it goes, and I have to confess that I like the figs, even though the actual building experience and the models themselves is the main reason I buy up all these sets.
If I had more space at home I'd buy a couple of the last UCS MFs and store them MISB somewhere safe with a view to selling them one day. Same with the Death Star which I think is a 100% guaranteed future classic - definitely my favourite set, and one to make the minifig collectors excited as well due to the huge number of figures.
I don't read much into Lego discontinuing the MF - they do it with all the sets eventually, and the MF has been around longer than most. I have a feeling that we'll never see another Star Wars set as big again, however - it's a one-off. I predict that Lego will increasingly focus on the playsets such as Venator, the new Tantive IV, Home One, Endor etc. from now on which have minifigs. I think we've seen the last of the huge, spectacular "realistic" sets like the MF, UCS Imperial Star Destroyer, UCS X-Wing, UCS Y-Wing, UCS Blockade Runner etc.

The shop wasnt selling any and they had to get rid of them, they kept reducing the price and now they're selling them for £100.

This set is a LEGO Direct exclusive - AFAIK it's only ever been available from LEGO Store on-line & LEGO stores (other than people selling-on sets they've bought). It's been out for a little over 2 years, which is a little longer than most LEGO sets, but shorter than many of the other exclusive UCS sets. They have still been selling a few per month in the UK LEGO Brand Stores, at full price, which is good for such an expensive set.
apparently, it will be available October 19 through 11:59pm EST December 6, 2009, so you can still get it in time for christmas.
@DrDaveWatford, some small shop in Bournemouth, not well known. I doupt they would have any left anyway.

These big ship sets usually don't last. I just hope that they don't do this to the Death Star.
It's great set, but... it have SO HIGH price. If I will have money for Lego Exclusive I won't buy this set, I'll buy other Exclusive.

As for where I found out about this: Lego notified all LEGO.com costumers about it through e-mail. Follow the link in the post to see what the message I got looked like.
I reckon lego have stopped selling it because theyve probably only sold about 2 sets and its not worth them carrying on.

The interior of the MF is purely framing for the structure; there isn't any detail.
Sad news to see the retirement of a great set, but hopefully this will allow the introduction of something new in the same UCS theme. I'm glad I have already acquired mine, and for the interest of Bluemoose K-Mart Australia had an extremely limited number of these available in a catalogue sale for about $200 off the RRP in 2008...

good thing I got mine when they came out. I got the 8,998 one.
If they do another UCE, the Slave I would be a great model - especially if they do the wings correct. A model of Executor would be great but not if its on the same scale as the ISD - it would end up having around 20,000 pieces.
Thanks iabstract. See, no detail on the inside, not hard to produce. it could be done. I hope the next UCS if there will even be one, will not break or match the record for most expensive set ever.
To me this set was always a failure. It is huge and perfectly to scale but terribly fragile. Additionally, with almost zero interior detail it is a shadow of the previous MF model that now goes for almost as much as this one. Since it is SO large, it is impressive as a table model, but I am always a sucker for playability and detail over size.
Since this set going out of production, I hope it is to make way for new, more exciting sets that we can all afford.
P.S. The Star Wars Death Star is the best set ever. If you can buy it you should get it.
What happened to the drawing where Lego were going to give away 5 of the low number serial numbered sets? I am pretty sure I entered my name for that, but I have not seen who they went to.

I dreamed of getting this set one day, but it looks like they're going to be gone soon. Too bad. This one really didn't last long, did it? The Imperial Star Destroyer was out for, like, 8 years or so before they dicontinued it.
