I really liked the fantasy aspects of this version of Castle. The evil skeletons (complete with skeletal horses in some sets) were just fantastic, really.
Darn no Clickits. Thought there would be some after Huwbot got a design change
I know this is completely unrelated, but I’d thought we’d get an article on the new LEGO Star Wars set images that were recently released by now
'Fantasy Era' Castle was a very good theme. It also broght me back from a short period of Dark Age back then. Really a shame we never saw everything they planned for it fully realised. I wonder how the Elves sets would have looked like and what their counterparts would have been. They showed a little glimpse what was meant to be in the LEGO Club magazine and a few early CMF characters were clearly designed after those ideas.
I love this set! It was one of my first ever Castle sets.
Every time I see the random set of the day now I’ll think of that Huwbot picking the set out of his cart...
Interesting thought out box art. The video review is worth a watch.
So the aim of the catapult is that small wooden structure? Not the best way to use that technique.
That was a nice army pack. I really liked the set.
I wish I were into castle but I wasn't. Late but never, I got my hands on a 7079 Drawbridge Defense, just to have a set from this theme. I'm very happy with my choice because it has everything from jester to gold king and even a skeleton horse. I didn't appreciate the theme then, but now...
When you realise the name refers to the skeletons, who are the ones defending themselves against the knights attacking with their catapult, not the knights defending themselves with a catapult
Wait, why is Huwbot giving us great sets and not Clikits?
Fantasy Era got me out of my system dark ages. First year had lots of good, affordable and troopbuildable small sets.
I don't think the defense is going very well.
Also holy... a black skeleton! I never knew those existed and I just read a comment about a skeletal horse? That's all amazing!
I really liked the fantasy era castle and it’s array of bad guys for the orcs and skeletons to fight I hope an evolved version of the theme returns one day.
And if a skeletal horse is awesome Darth TNT they did a GITD one for Monster Fighter’s Mummy 9462... now that is amazing!
@Darth Studhilus: ehmm wait, what? Clickits are great sets! ;)
This theme was practically a prototype for LotR and really shined with it's extended range and four factions. So many great sets started from this humble little battle pack.
BRIMG BACK CASTLE!
I had to.
But really, this is where they got it right.
Fantasy Era did a really good job with the lower cost sets to tease people into buying them. Plus, they were great sets for both the parts and the figs. It was a reintroduction to what a Castle theme should be after the KKII debacle. I bought a ton of Fantasy Era as it hit just right for me in terms of timing: disposable income, not many responsibilities, and great components! I've lost count as to how many crownies I have and my pile of skeleton horses continues to grow. Anytime I put them out during a display it's a hit and people instantly flock to that section of the layout.
Yeah it's too bad this theme didn't progress on to include other factions: Elves (with possibly orcs/goblins as their enemy). I actually prefer this theme over LotR/Hobbit as the sets were cheaper and they were actually better sets since they weren't based on scenes from a movie (originality).
This is one of the few sets from the fantasy castle line (2007-2009) that I DON'T have. This line was awesome. Between it and the pirates line during the same time was what pulled me back into Lego. I loved the skeletons; having a horde of them attacking the castles of the living looks awesome. I especially like those little round shields they carry (like the black one in this set), reminded me of the old round gray shields from the 80s in a way.
@jackthenipper
I had never seen that set before. That's amazing, thanks for sharing
@Darth TNT, Some MOC minifigures and skeletal horses from back then still all in my display collection: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/AmperZand/Fantasy/death_knights_and_zombie.jpg
More recently, LEGO has done long, black skeleton legs. So you can create tall, black skeletons. I have two in my display collection (no pictures, sorry).
Really great set, especially for the price. It works as an army builder, but the included vehicle is actually really good as well.
